My first impression of Dr. Lord was that he knew his way of doing things worked. That there was more to this surgery than the surgery itself. The pre-op and post-op requirements were to insure that I had the very best results with minimum complications.
I followed everything as I was directed and found that I never had any complications before or after. The life adjustments were easy to accept and became a everyday part of my life quickly. I was up and around hours after surgery and home in 2 days.
Dr. Lord works closely with the whole team and seems to encourage them to work with me. They all were heading in the same direction when it came to what was best for me. Never did I get any cross talk between the team members ( one saying one thing and another saying something different).
I would highly recommend Dr. Lord to any one that I really cared about and wanted to see have a successful surgery.
I first met Dr. Lord at orentation,(a class designed to tell you the pros and cons of wls). I was very impressed with his wit, charm and the plain way he addressed wls. He did not try to sugar coat the resuls or the risks involved. The room was filled with about 30 people, all wanting wls and on a waiting list for him and Dr. fontana to preform wls. The first thing, his staff handed out a big blue book that they had put together. It is about the size of my small town phone book. This book has all the information, pictures, and resources I wanted to ask about and a lot more that I had not even thought to ask about wls. I had never seen so much information about wls in one place and so easy to read and understand. (It has become my bible since surgery!)
The second thing Dr. Lord said to us in this class was he wanted to see us at the support meetings the first thursday of every month. I thought Yea I bet you will be there. Not only has he and/or Dr. Fontana been to every support group meetting, his staff is also there. (When I first heard about these support group mettings I thought great, I really don't have time for this. I went anyway and boy am I glad I did. I love all the friends that I have made at the support group mettings and all the imformation that is passed along, that I really hate to miss any now.
The staff, His nurse Jan, the nutrition nurses Chris & Linda, were so helpful before and AFTER the surgery. If any questions or concerns came to mind, all I had to do was call/e-mail leave a message and within a day (sometimes within the hour)someone was on the phone or e-mail getting things straight for me. What a relief! I must admit because of all the media hype, I was so afraid. Then I heard that he and Dr. Fontana also preformed this surgery on his own mother, my fears left me. I met his mother once at the support group meeting,(she didn' get out of it either) a wonderful down to earth woman, If he was so confident to risk this gal I had no worries. I know his record here. He has preformed thousands or operations and not one loss and very few complications. I have had no complications. Because of all the information I was able to know in advance what to expect. I know in my heart that Dr. lord does not look down his nose at anyone for being overweight. He sees the person inside waiting to come out. He knows his craft so well and has such a great staff that he can make it happen. he did for me. If I had it to do all over?? With either of these guys I would in a heart beat. I would even let them operate on my mother, child, hubby or best friend!
I met Dr. Lord a little over two years ago at the bariatric orientation. I was very impressed with his self confidence. At first I was a little wary of the fact that he was a military doctor, but as the months went by and I heard him speak at our monthly support group meetings, I really came to understand that he wasn't the average military doctor. He sets his standards high for both himself and his patients. His staff is highly trained and very supportive. No question is ever too crazy and he will answer with complete honesty. I am 4 months post op and will never regret having surgery. My life changes daily and it is really great! I recently ran into several people that I use to work with and they didn't even recognize me until I spoke to them. They couldn't believe the changes. My recommendation for anyone who is contemplating this surgery, is to talk to Dr. Lord, ask questions, do your research and then sign on with Dr. Lord. You won't regret your decision.
I really like Dr. Chastanet and Dr. Lord . Although all I heard when I first entered this program was about Dr. Lord and Dr. Fontana. How wonderful both of them were and that they were the greatest. Dr Fontana left in January and now Dr. Lord will be leaving PNH in July. Dr. Chastanet has been working side by side with both Dr. Lord/Fontana and I feel confident he is of the same caliber as they are. I really like Dr. Chastanet's calm reasuring way. At my first visit I had a list of questions to ask him and I never even needed to consult my list after the first question. He explained the procedure so I could understand exactly what was going to happen. He answered my questions and made me feel more confident about this journey I have embarked upon. If you began your journey about the time I did and you are now going to have your surgery with Dr. Chastanet I am sure you will find you like him as much as I. Dr. Chastanet addressed the risks of surgery very well. I have done a great deal of reading so none of the information he explained was scary to me. I have been preparing for this appointment for a long time. During my preparation for surgery I had to have a colonscopy and Dr. Chastanet took care of this procedure for me. This is not a pleasant procedure but he was very efficient and made me as comfortable as possible and reasured me. I look forward to having my Pre Op appointment (4/15/05) and surgery in the near future.
I will have to say that Dr Lord and Dr Chastanet are the most well skilled and compassionate doctors I have seen in a long while. I am so glad that I had my surgery done by them. As I was a little scared the day of surgery but Dr Chastanet put me at ease and said I should be a little nervous but that everything would be alright. I would reccomend these two to anyone. As we all know Dr Lord is leaving in June to go to Florida. The people in Florida are going to be very lucky to have him as he is very good at what he does. Thanks again to them for giving my health back to me.
My first impression of him was great, especially with his lastname.
My impression overtime has gotton to be more comforted with this particular doctor.
The office staff is okay.
I have no complaints about Dr. Lord.
Know that you are in outstanding hands with Dr. Jeffrey Lord.
To the highest. Very important to this program and plan in your life.
Risks were spoken in great deal. Especially with my pre-existing medical conditions.
Overall he gets OUTSTANDING!
Both, because if one is not there than the plan is off centered.
I was honestly a little intimidated by Dr. Lord when I first met him. He's one of the best, and he knows it. He may be a little cocky, but I don't mind. He has a sense of humor, which is also nice. He's very helpful and answers any questions you might have, no matter how trivial or stupid you think they are. He wants you well informed before he takes you into the OR, asking you questions about what he will be doing to make sure you do understand what is going to happen to you before, during and after your surgery. I don't think I would feel as comfortable about getting this done if anyone else was doing my surgery.
my fist impression oh Dr. Lord was that he was really funny.. I could tell that this experience was gonna be fun.. I felt that he cared about all of his patients. Which to a big person, really means alot. He should that if we followed his directions carefully that we would get the best results out of the surgery.. I look forward to seeing him again...
Let me tell you about my Surgeon, Dr. Mark Fontana. He is the most amazing doctor. In my opinion I could not have asked for better care and follow-up program than with this surgeon. Jan Carlo and the rest of the staff are right by your side to help you along with your new life. The waiting period is very long compared to the civillian sector, however, I would not have had the opportunity to have the education and direction of this Bariatric Team. Thank You!
UPDATE: My great surgeon, Dr. Mark Fontana, has left the Navy to pursue his career in the civillian sector.
This is a tremendous loss for the Bariatric Program at Portsmouth Naval Hospital, and will be truly missed.
