Dr. Maher is a very nice man. He looks you in the eyes and tells you the truth. He does not beat around the bush (so to speak). He is up front about everything.rnI have only meant him once, at my first visit. His staff is wonderful, very helpful, very knowledgable. They help you in every way. I had the nurse Jill and she was very caring. There was nothing that I did not like about Dr. Maher. Dr. Maher's staff went over all the details of my after care. I will be staying in Richmond for at least one week, because I live over 100 miles from Richmond. Dr. Maher told me what type of surgery I should have and the risks. I would rate Dr. Maher 100%, I really liked him for my doctor. He is just knows what he is doing and wants me and my husband to be comfortable with what is going to be happening to me. They all are very concerned about someone being with you so that they can learn how to help you have surgery. I have to lose 47 pounds and do test and classes before surgery. I came home with a diet. I am to try hard to lose this weight and learn to eat right. For the first time in a long time I feel that I am on the right road to better health. I can't wait to get a surgery date. My family is very supportive of my idea and my husband says that he trust Dr. Maher to do my surgery. He was recommended to me by many doctors that I had went to see. Because of my weight and that I need a team of doctors to help me.
My first impression of Dr Maher is that he is somewhat passive and strict. But knowledgeable! My impression did not change about him. Office staff was really nice, but there isnt a need for appt. When you get to the office you wait! I mean, My appt was for like 9:30, I didn't get seen until around 10:45 and they werent even busy! Future patients should be aware that he wants you to be able to do the majority of losing weight on your own! All of these comments are based soely on my experience, I wish I had had a good experience as well. I am now with Dr Elliott at St. Marys, he gave me a fill and I have lost 3 lbs in a week,,,,so yea me!!!!! Everything happens for a reason! God Bless them all for having the ability to help people over come this big obstical
I thought Dr Maher looked a little young to have been in this field for 36 years. I felt totally at ease with him and now that we've been through the RNY I have even greater confidence in him. His practice is clearly teamed based and I felt affirmed many times that my input as a team member was valued. I was surprised more than once by a personal call from a staff member to move things along more smoothly. The CNPs were expert at resolving my questions and closing any loose ends. The least enjoyable aspect of this whole experience was the archaic facility I was in post-op. VCU had no private rooms. Sleep and rest were totally out of the question. Great nurses who tried theirbest to avoidwaking me! Dr Maher's program requires a pre-op training of EMMI films, with quizzes, psych eval with MMPI, one-on-one nutrition sessions. Furthermore, there was a sincere emphasis on staying in touch with the whole team for life to ensure we face all issues and problems with the lifeline in hand. I couldn't be more pleased.
Well..I went to my consultation thinking that I wanted a LapBand...and after talking to Dr Maher, Ive decided on the Gastric Bypass. He was a very down to earth, easy to talk to surgeon. I felt that he was honest and forthcoming with all the risks and benefits of each procedure and he never made me feel rushed or pressured. His office staff is wonderful and Jill, his nurse, is very informative and kind. The thing that I liked most about him was the way he spoke to me. Despite the fact that I am a nurse, I do not wish for others in the health care field to treat me as if I know ANYTHING other than what Ive researched here on the internet re: WLS. I am a GYN nurse. (big difference)rnI am waiting for a surgery date and hope to hear from them very soon....I'll keep you posted!rnI asked if I could have a consult with a psychiatrist, to see if he/she thought that I would be a good candidate. I am glad that I did, I had a good experience with that too. BUT..... it has taken a couple of months for all of that to take place and I really wanted a date by now. So, that being said, I cant complain about either doctor...they were both wonderful...I can complain about how long this has taken now that I have finally made up my mind to get it done. rn
