I HAD MY SURG. IN 1987 AND I HAVE PUT MY WEIGHT BACK ON. WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE ELSR HAD THE SAME PROBLEM? I HAD A GASTRIC BYPASS WITH STAPLE. DR. SUGERMAN WAS A GOOD DR. HE WAS JUST IN RICHMOND AND I LIVED IN FLOYD, VA. AT THE TIME, I HAD TO HAVE MY GALL BLADDER REMOVED THE SAME YEAR, AFTER LOSING MORE THAN 100 LBS , I DEVELOPED A ALCOHOL DEPENDENCY TOO. I NOW HAVE'NT TOUCHED A DROP IN 11 YEARS. IM HAVING LOTS OF HEALTH ISSUES, SUCH AS ANEMIA AND OTHER BLOOD PROBS. , I ALSO HAVE OTHER THINGS GOING ON. MY FAMILY DOC DOES'NT REALLY WANT TO ADDRESS THIS. HELP? MAYBE . IF SOMEONE COULD RESPOND IN ANY WAY I WOULD CERTAINLLY APPRECIATE IT . SINCERELY; BETH PATSEL

My first impression of Dr. Sugerman was very positive. He was pleasant and informative. He put me at ease right away. I had every confidence in him. His nurse Jill was wonderful, her concern and respect was very reassuring. I am sorry to say that Dr. Sugerman has retired from doing surgery. I am sorry that I was not more agressive in seeking out peer support because I know that I would not have gained back the weight I did. There is a group that meets in Richmond but I have no car and I live about 50 miles from meeting place. I was well informed about risks of surgery but in my case I felt the risks of not having surgery were much greater. If I had not had the surgery, the weight would have killed me or I would have killed myself. Dr. Sugerman got me through a rough patch after surgery and he is A1 in my book. I feel that both surgical competence and bedside manner are great but, I personally, as long as his skills in surgery are A1, I can forgive a lack of manner. Although, that was never a problem with Dr. Sugerman. As I said, I had many complications and spent much time under medical care(Stage 4 Pressure Wounds)but the outcome has been so positive. I am living life now, not just existing.

Initial consultation 10-20-00. I had a very good impression of Dr. Sugarman. His staff was warm and receptive to my needs. Dr. Sugarman was very thorough in reviewing my medical history. He was up front on the fact that CIGNA would likely deny my surgery which it did 8 days later. His staff has directed me to an insurance company that they have been successful in getting the surgery covered. I was able to make the change easily as open enrollment is now year round with my company. Dr. Sugarman discussed with me the laproscopic procedure that I was very interest in for me. He said I was a good candidate for it but emphasized the additional risks in some areas. My only recommendation is to check with the staff on what information is needed (specific medical records) as Dr. Sugarman did not seem to be well versed in the required documentation that CIGNA wanted with their referral letter. His staff, however, knew exactly what was needed. In all honesty, I prefer that the doctor stick with doctoring and the staff with the paperwork details so this was not a big issue, just something to be aware of. Update 3-31-01. I attended a few of his support group meetings. They have been very informative. I have met people in all stages (considering surgery, pre-op, and post op). I have found his staff to be exceptionally caring and supportive to the patient, as a person and not just as a gastric bypass patient. I have discussed things totally unrelated to the surgery with his nurse, Jill. She not only listened, but cared as she saw me as a person and considered my life as a whole important and mot just my weight issues. The after care is critical to this team of doctors and their staff. There is teaching on how to make this the successful tool that it can be and education on what it takes for you to sabatoge the surgical efforts. I would highly recommend Dr. Sugarman and his team of terrific medical personnel.

Hello - its been a while since I been out here - I think I was a little discouraged. But I have an appointment with Dr. Sugarman on the 25th, I am a little nervous. We will see how it goes.

10/24 - my surgeon is absolutely wonderful. I had 100% confidence in his abilities. His staff was also great. He came to see me at least every other day while I was in the hospitial and once I got home, he even called to check up on me! I totally recommend him, he was wonderful!

Dr. Sugerman was very through with his examination and he explained the "reality" of the surgery very well. He was all business though. His staff made up for any shortness that was experienced. His office staff was very nice and patient with me and my husband. Dr. Sugerman is very serious about after care. He will not do surgery unless you will stick with the after care.

Dr Sugerman and his staff are wonderful. They do not judge you and are only there to help you. I had total support from them especially his nurse Jill. She is wonderful.

I am very impressed with Dr. Sugarman. He came very highly recommended to me by a patient of his and now a friend of mine. His staff have been great, full of knowledge and real concern over helping us with this most difficult decision. We all feel we are in the hands of a real solution solver. I recommend this surgery for anyone who has problems losing weight and maintaining the weight loss. If you follow the program, you can't help by succeed. The clinic has a very dedicated team of specialists who do follow you and council you, are available anytime for help. Their program is very comprehensive. I am very, very comfortable with my decision to drive 100 miles to have this surgery done by this team of experts and recommend them to anyone in this area of the country. To this date, the only negative is the amount of time I have waited to have the surgery - almost 9 months from the date of first contact to the surgery date. That speaks for how busy they are!
