When I first met Dr. Schmidt, I knew I wanted him as a surgeon. He was thorough, compassionate, and didn't lack a personality like many doctors do. He cares about his patients. He is continually interested in patient progress and concerns that I have. He answered all my questions and alleviated my worries and concerns. His office staff is great - his office manager, the dietitians, the PA's and nurses all care. Though some of his front desk persons need some basic people skills, they are overall fantastic. I would recommend anyone to him.

my surgeon was Dr. Hans Schmidt and I had lapband surgery October 16,2009.My first visit with Dr. Schmidt was professional and he was sure that I understood everything and left me with no doubts that this surgery would be the life change I needed to be a healthy person I wasn't before seeing him. His overall proesssionalism makes you feel like your someone he generally cares about and each time I've seen him that's how I feel. His office staff makes you feel the same way either there or when on the phone with them. He's the surgeon I recommend to anyone who has seen the changes in me. Everything that it involves from the surgery to the care afterwards is explained in detail so you fully understand what's to happen and I liked that about the Doctor. I felt at ease and not rushed during the initial consultation as if he had all day just to speak with me. This is the surgeon you want to see if you are considering bariatric surgery.
My surgery was performed by Dr. Hans Schmidt on September 6, 2005. After losing 180 pounds, now 5 years later, I am still 180 pounds lighter, having successfully maintained my weight loss. Yes, Dr. Schmidt is a skilled surgeon, yes, I knew he was the right surgeon choice for me. But as Dr. Schmidt so rightly said, this surgery is a TOOL, and not a magic bullet. What I most value about Dr. Schmidt's skills, is that he prepared me to MAINTAIN my weight loss. Over the past 5 years since my surgery, I have met many others who have had the surgery, but have been unsuccessful in maintaining their weight loss. This difference is Dr. Schmidt. He made sure I understood the commitment, the challenge and the lifestyle choices that were and are necessary in order to maintain what his surgery has allowed me to achieve. Dr. Schmidt, words cannot express my respect and my gratitude.
My surgeon, Dr. Hans Schmidt is TERRIFIC!!!!!! I'm so glad I chose him as my surgeon. Dr. Schmidt provided me with all the information I needed to make my decision on which surgical procedure would be of most benefit to me. My surgery was successful and five days after surgery I felt great. My friends were shocked to see me singing in church one week after surgery. I was very impressed with his entire team starting with processing my paper work for insurance approval to the outstanding aftercare program provided by his office. His associate provided us with such valuable information regarding aftercare staring with the the first stage to the solid food stage. She gave us helpful hints from her own experience;she had the surgery 10 years ago. On my monthly follow-up visit I met with the nutritionist Wendy who I worked with before my surgery. She is a great resource for me, very professional and very knowledgeable.
My hospital stay experience was very positive. Dr. Schmidt and his Associates saw me before my surgery asked if I had any concerning questions and just made me feel OK! They came to see me after the surgery. I just can't say enough wonderful things about this Group. I've already recommended them to two of my friends. My overall rating on a scale of 0 to 5, 5 being excellent is 5(excellent)
I had gone to another surgeon prior to meeting Dr. Schmidt, but did not feel comfortable and had been reccomended to Dr. Schmidt through an anesthesiologist friend that works with him at Hackensack Hospital. I signed up for their seminar and knew right away that this was the practice for me. My seminar was in July, but due to my insurance had to wait 6 months to get approval. Booked my surgery for March because it took a while to get my GP to do all of his paperwork (had I known this, I would have done my pre-op visits with my siugeons office). The day of the surgery Dr. Schmidt was great - he knew that I was very nervous, but was kind and understanding. The surgery went great and I left the hospital a few hours later with no pain at all. I never had to take any pain meds - not even tylenol! The next day I even went to my daughter's basketball game. My first post op visit was very informative - the nutritional visit was great. Tomorrow is my first fill and I am very excited. It has been almost 6 weeks and I am now down 30 pounds, am walking 45 minutes a day without being out of breath, am off my high blood pressure meds and down 2 sizes in clothing - all in a month and a half! I cannot tell you how happy I am with Dr. Schmidt and his staff. I would reccommend him to everyone!!!
My first impression of Dr. Schmidt was that he seemed to have lots of surgical experience and he appeared to be very professional, humble, kind, and knowledgeable about all kinds of laparoscopic abdominal surgery (not just bariatric). I have asthma and it was actually my Pulmonologist who first recommended him to me. I was particularly concerned about how my Fibromyalgia, hiatal hernia, GERD (Reflux), and asthma would possibly impact gastric bypass surgery. Dr. Schmidt answered all of my questions very thoroughly. He in turn also asked me many relevant medical history questions which reassured me that he was very thorough. I left my first office visit with him alleviated of all fear, and optomistic about going forward with the RNY. He had me obtain many different medical clearances from my other doctors, but his staff helped me get through all the red tape. Consequently, I had my Roux-en-Y surgery done by Dr. Hans Schmidt on 8/31/09 at Hackensack University Hospital and have had absolutely no major post-op problems. I found Dr. Schmidt's bedside manner to be very quiet, gentle and concerned. That, coupled with his noteworthy medical/surgical competence was very reassuring.rn I was very impressed with his entire staff too, particularly with Kathleen, the R.N. who runs his Post-Op aftercare program. On top of the professional Nutritionists that Dr. Schmidt has on staff that I'll be able to see for the rest of my life, Kathleen is like a down-to-earth walking encyclopedia of nutritional and medical knowledge that I found to be very sweet and helpful too. rn In my experience I have found that some surgeons will \"say\" they have a good aftercare program, but when you really take a good look at what they offer, you realize it is all a lot of hype. Dr. Schmidt actually gives you the most thorough and structured aftercare program you can imagine. He seems to be really interested in helping people get healthy and stay healthy for their entire lives. rn I would absolutely rate Dr. Schmidt a 10, on a scale of 1 to 10. These are just my own personal impressions of my own surgical experience and I am making no statements about what other people may experience. I just consider him to be \"the Top Doc\" in Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery in all the Tri-State area. What else can I say? He is fantastic. I truly feel blessed to have found such a competent surgeon.
