I reviewed several surgeons in my local area when I made the choice to see Dr. Spivak. The very next day after I had made an appointment to visit his office for a consulation, to my suprise Dr. Spivak was on my local news informing the public of the new silicone ring/band procedure that he and other cutting edge doctors are trying to get approved with the FDA. Dr. Spivak is one of only a few doctors allowed to do clinical trials on this procedure.
From my initial consultation until now I have felt as if I am in the best hands possible. His office staff is very nice, although he could stand to staff a person to answer the phone full time. Other than that I have no complaints in regards to his office staff.
When I met Dr. Spivak he was very informative of the risks and the benefits to all of the different types of WL Surgery. Only after a lenghty discussion about each one did he and I collectively make the decision to have the gastric bypass over the other surgeries available. I felt as if I have definetly made the right choice in choosing Dr. Spivak as my surgeon and that I really won't have to choose between competence and bedside manner because he has got both.
03/09/01 - Well. I made my first contact with Dr. Harbergs office today. They took down my insurance info, and promised to call back by monday. They were very nice, and extemely helpful. I will update when I get my appointment. Thanks all.
3/11/01 - I just wanted to update and say that I have changed doctors to Dr. Spivak. Dr. Harberg only does VGB's and I am truly satisfied with the research I have done on RNY's. I feel that this is surgical option for me. Dr. Spivak's office staff are really sweet and informative. They have answered what few questions I had left, and are being totally supportive.
3/25/01- Just wanted anyone who was interested that Dr.Spivak has a wonderful web site. (WWW.Lap-Surgery.net) So not use the ().
04/03/01 I had my consultation yesterday and Dr. Spivak and his office were really nice. He explained in detail the procedure it bennefits and its risks.
My first impression was that he is very thorough and wants you to make an educated decision. My opinion of Dr Spivak is still, and continues to be that he is an exceptional person.
My husband and I have found his staff to be very supportive and understanding. I couldn't ask for more.
I truly appreciated that Dr Spivak wanted me to be sure I knew what I wanted. He did not leave me feeling like he knew more than me. I can't stand for a health practioner of any kind to act like God. That would never a problem for Dr Spivak. He is down to earth.
Future patients should know that they truly need to listen to Dr Spivak when he insists they watch information on his practices or that they do their own homework. This is an major change in your anatomy and you have to be able to deal with the changes in your life.
Dr Spivak emphasizes aftercare as much as any other surgeon I would imagine. He makes sure that you understand what steps you need to make in the care of your incision...etc. He also sent me home with several pages of information on food and vitamin supplements.
Dr Spivak addressed the risks and wanted to know what information I had found and where. Overall, I would rate him Top Drawer! I truly find his competence and bedside manner exceptional!
I understand that the paragraph below and that 100% positive reviews are possible suspect. Anyone who knows me knows that I'm a critical person. I don't let anyone get away with making my mind up. I genuinely had a completely wonderful experience, other than the pain. The pain was kinda expected, as I would imagine it is with all other surgeries.
dr. spivak is wonderful. he makes you go to his seminar before he will even see you in his office. seminar very informative. i went for my visit he spent all the time i needed with him. my insurance was approved quickly. he is one of the only few who are approved for the new banding procedure although i am having the rny lap. i would recommend him to anyone
Dr. Spivak seems very knowledgeable. He does VBG laproscopically. I hope to have the new lap-band procedure and Dr. Spivak is one of a handful of doctors in the U.S. who will be approved to do the procedure.
He does not have a structured aftercare program at this point, so that is disappointing to me. He has recently moved to Houston, I think from Tel Aviv, where he has performed various types of gastric surgery for years.
When I first went in to consult with Dr. Spivak I was a little uneasy since he was new to the area. He made me very comfortable and I felt he was very knowledgable in his area. It took about a month to get all the letters and referrals written up and sent in. I recieved approval on the first try(amazing considering 2 years earlier I was flat denied by the same company). Dr. Spivak has been approved to do the gastic banding but it is not yet approved for use in the US. When it is he will be doing that procedure liproscopically. Anyway, he tried to talk me into waiting for it to be approved and to do that procedure but I was more than ready to get the VBG done and over . THis made me nervous that he didn't want to do the VBGbut I stuck it out. On July 31,2000 I went in and Dr. Spivak did a VBG on me LIPROSCPICALLY! Other than being ill from the anasthia I have recovered wonderfully. I am now 5 days post-op and almost back to normal routine. He was ther at least 2-3 times a day to check on me in the hospital and has been wonderful ever since. I would recommend this man to my mother (and I have). If you have any doubts or questions feel free to e-mail me.
