Dr. Udekwu.......First impression was "worth waiting for" . and do mean waiting. Apt. was at 10:45am saw him at 3:00pm. Office staff was very nice and they will probaly remember me as that girl that would not go away. But I was determined to see the Dr. and reschudling was not an option for me. I would have him work on his ability to be on time but hey he is the Dr. I guess its part of the job. The main thing I wanted to know from him was if he would do a revision and if so did he think I was up to one. He said yes to both with of course the speech on the higher risk factors involved. He did say something that I havn't been able to forget.... that WLS could give me 15 more years to live emphasising live not just take up space. I also left with a new since that my WLS in 1987 had failed me not me failing it. I also got the reminder that this a still a small town. One of the girls on the front desk I once lived across the street from and his nurse prac. is also a firemans wife and her hubbie works with mine. SMALL TOWN....... I am not going to use Dr. Udekwu afterall the insurance will only pay for RNY and after doing all this research on the DS I will not choose to go that way I want the DS. So I have been in contact with Dr. Ungson I am *****switching****** I am going to Mexico. and Self Pay

Dr. Gilberto Ungson (Beltran) is a excellent doctor.

I emailed him many times prior to my decision to allow him to do my DS. He always responed within a matter days, usually hours. He has an excellent record with the DS. He actually does a variety of gastrointestinal surgeries, not only bariatrics so his experience is extensive. He was very thorough in his questions to me. I was very impressed with him prior to meeting him. His written English is not always grammatically correct but I had no problem understanding him.

When I met him, I was not disappointed. He is very kind and instilled on me a sense that not only did he know what he was doing but that he wanted me to know what he was doing. He explained everything and had a wonderful "bedside manner." His spoken English is excellent. He did an excellent job with my surgery. I had no complications and actually left the hospital in only 4 days post-op with no drains and only pain and anti-nausea medicine. He did come to my hotel room to check on me when we needed him. He is very professional but also very talkative and personal.

His staff of other doctor and nurses are excellent. Overall, they were the best, most caring group of medical professionals I have ever dealt with.

I would reccomend learning a few basic phrases in spanish and taking a spanish/english phrase book. Not all nurses speak fluent English. This in no way hampers their ability to care for you but being able to communicate better and more quickly is always good.

I would rate Dr. Ungson and his staff a 10 out of 10 and would reccomend him to anyone.

I emailed Dr. Ungson many times and he was always quick to answer my questions. When I met him in person, he was funny and energetic. He spoke English very well and tried to make me feel as comfortable as possible. He addressed all of my needs immediately after surgery and I was visited by him and/or his internist several times a day. He and his staff were exceptional and the care was better than I have ever received in the United States. Not once did I have to ring for the nurses for pain medication or any supplies. I can't say enough good things about my experience with the doctor or the hospital. Because of distance, aftercare is limited to contacting him if I have any questions or concerns, as well as following up with my local PCP and keeping him posted of my progress. He stresses vitamin supplementation for life but what he recommends is minimal and can be adjusted based on future labwork. This puts the responsibility for my aftercare on me and I'll have to be my own advocate, which is fine since I'm more familiar with this surgery than my own PCP. I find it empowering. Overall, I found him to be a skilled surgeon with a wonderful personality.

Dr. Ungson is a very nice man. He listened to what we had to say and answered our questions. He called my husband in the states after the surgery to let him know how I was doing. He always told me to tell my husband hello for him. He is a very busy man. He is fairly young to he is my age!!! I know to some that may not seem young but I sure thought it was! I was very impressed with the Dr. he is very family oriented and that is wonderful! His office staff doesn't speak much english so be prepared to have someone translate for you! Dr. Ungson was a great surgeon so were the other doctors that were on my surgery. The antistisiologist was great to. I have no complaints about my surgery, the way it was done.

Dr. Ungson was very quick to answer my e-mails. He speaks English better than he writes it - but is still very understandable. Dr. Ungson, the internist and the anesthesiologist checked on me at least 3 times a day, every day that I was in the hospital. I felt that they were very thorough and knowledgeable. I feel that I was taken care of, at least, as well in Hermosillo as I would have been in any hospital in the states. The nursing staff was very caring - not all the nurses were bilingual - so a Spanish/English dictionary would be good to have - but even with the language differences I was able to get my wishes or concerns accross and I don't feel that this interfered with my care at all.

Dr. Ungson was Great.
He Spoke english very well and with that I was totally able to understand what was going to happen to me. He was honestly concerned about my well being.
He was there before as well as after surgery. He would answer any and all of my question I had.
He staff and the hospital were also wonderful. With the language barrier I thought it would be really hard to communicate with the nurses, but actually it wasn't hard at all. They have done this so many times before that they seemed to know right off the bat what us americans are feeling and what we are asking for.
Although I felt went to Mexico alone, they made me feel that I wasn't alone. Don't get me wrong, I was really happy when I was able to fly home, but I do have to say that it wasn't as bad as I had anticipated.
Thank you so much to Dr. U and his wonderful staff for giving me a whole new wonderful live.

Dr. Ungson was great. May 17th, my 37th Bday, had silastic Ring added to enlarged anastomosis on 5-17-04. Was 185 at time or ring placement. Now 162 and maintaining. Also, now distal. The care and attention in Hermosillo was far better than what we see here.

Very friendly, very competent. Excellent bedside manner.
I became even more impressed with his credentials as time went on, he is very qualified, and is also I believe the director of his dept. as well.
The staff is ok, Silvia came on strong initially, but kinda fades towards the end, and her driving is wild!!!!
I cannot think of anything I truly dislike about him. He is very accomplished in his field.
Aftercare is a little difficult, as the distance between us is great, but he has emailed me quickly with any questions, and I have the surgeons report from him for my PCP.
He did not address the risks, I didn't want to know, I had gone over the risks a thousand times on my own prior to the surgery, the benefits outweighed the risks for me.
Both were great, if I had to chose one it would be his surgical competence as best. Which is what I'd prefer anyway.

My first impression was great. He is so kind and sweet. I interviewed him over the internet with many emails. He was always prompt and knowledgable.

My impression only grew better as I got to know him and meet him in person.

His staff is wonderful and helpful.`

If I had to say anything bad it would be the language barrier, although minimal with him.

Dr. Ungson really takes good care of his patients, he is knowledgable and kind. Very attentive.

He isn't doesn't talk a lot about nutrition except what to eat the first 3 weeks. He advised me to try new things slowly after the first 3 weeks and go from there. He strongly advised me to keep up on my lab work, and gave me a list of the vitamins to take and to take them forever.

No structured aftercare. I see my on PCP on regular basis.

He stated that all surgeries have risk and that this surgery is the same. He has had no mortalities at this post.

I rate him very highly....he saved my life as far as I'm concerned. My insurance here in America wounld help me to be healthy, but he would. I can't thank him enough.

He has excellent bedside manner. I couldn't believe how good. And his competence is off the charts.
