Geoffrey Thompson Bariatric Surgeon M.D., F.A.C.S.

'My first impression of Dr. Thomspon was that he didn't have much time to speak to me. We met for the first time in July 2005 and he spent about 10 minutes with me. He brought in a couple of residents as well

My first impression of Dr. Thompson was that he was very nice and listened to me and all my concerns and questions. All his staff where very helpful and patient with me and all my questions and concerns. He is very a very good listener and tells you the truth. He follows you with very good before and after care. He explained all the risks and complications involved with the surgery and after the surgery. He is a very talented surgeon with excellent bedside manner which to me was very important. After my surgery he came a checked on me everyday at least once a day, and at my first post-surgery he was very positive and supporttive. i would recommend him to anyone thinking about having this surgery done.

My first impression of Dr. Thompson and his team was a good one. They seemed very professional and very caring. It became quite clear that they saw that I had been suffering for many years and were genuinely interested in ending my suffering. His office staff and nurse were very compassionate and helpful with concerns and problems that I was having before my surgery.
Dr. Thompson and his team are excellent surgeons and know what they are doing. They were very clear with me on the possible risks and very understanding.
What was most impressive to me is that I was having difficulties because I had not been receiving my psychiatric medications and had quit smoking cold turkey. When I spoke to them about these issues, they immediately gave me a nicotine patch and put me back on my medications which was very helpful in my recovery.
Because my situation is different than most bypass patients, my aftercare has been different and more individualized.
I rate Dr. Thompson and his team a 10+! they literally saved my life and I am quite grateful for that.
My impression is that his surgical competence is just a bit better than his bedside manner. However, when I spoke to his resident's about difficulties that I was having on the general surgery unit, they were very sympathetic and made a point to contact the nursing manager regarding the issues that I had brought to their attention. Overall it was a good experience considering the hurdles that were being faced in my particular case.
I would highly recommend him and his team for bypass surgery.

He was very personable and understanding.
My impression of him just keeps improving he is a wonderful man.
His office staff is great, they are willing to help in any whay they can.

Aftercare is very important and kept to a pretty strict schedule.

You are given a book that takes you through the first 3 month after surgery with very specific instruction.

He was very open about the risks of surgery, and didn't candy coat it.

Dr. Thompson is one of the best I have ever dealt with.

Both his surgical skill and bedside manner are excellent.

I am greatly impressed with Dr. Thompson so far. He spoke at the informational class I attended at the Mayo Clinic in May of this year and he seemed to be very thorough and empathetic. I have since learned that he has had gastric bypass surgery himself. No wonder he knows what questions to answer before you even ask. I was delighted when I received my appointment to see a surgeon and the appointment was with Dr. Thompson. I am truly excited to have him perform the operation.

The chief resident on Dr. Thompson's team explained the surgery and all risks in detail complete with drawings to my husband and I.

I am very impressed with the whole bariatric surgery program at Mayo and would definitely rate Dr. Thompson and all involved a 10 out of 10.

If I had to choose between competence and bedisde manner, I would choose the surgical competence, but I believe that it's a definite bonus if the surgeon has both. Dr. Thompson does.

Of course, I have only met Dr. Thompson on a personal basis once, so my opinion may change, but my first impression is that he is one of the best.

I will keep you posted if any negative issues arise.

I liked Dr. Thompson. He was recommended to me by my Endocrinologist. He has had the surgery himself so he knows what I am going through.

At my initial consult with him, he entered with two other doctors/student but they didn't say much (were just observing). He was patient and answered my questions.

My first impression of Dr. Thompson was good. He was very polite but seemed hurried. He did answer my questions when I asked them. I'm waiting fior the next time I get to see him.
His secretary was wonderful. She was able to help me immediately when I called about things. I think Dr. Thompson is lucky to have her working in his office.
The cares before and after surgery are strict. I like it because it makes me be active in my care and lifestyle changes. I am responsible to make sure things get done. Plus the support is already in place so it is easy to access when needed.

I liked him a lot. Only met with him briefly but he brought in several of his associates. I've heard he is very good and I am very comfortable with Mayo Clinic since I've beeing going there for my health problems or 15 years

I have yet to meet him yet..I do know he will be my surgeon.Have researched him and found he is excellant.I will meet him in June

I changed surgeons to Dr. Thompson as he is not booked so far out..
I met him in June and liked him very much..He said he *would be honored* to do my surgery..
He had this surgery himself..

Dr. Thompson is a very approachable, down to earth, compassionate and skilled surgeon. I grew to respect him even more as time went on. He underwent roux-en y surgery within the last year, so he understands!!!!! His office staff was always extremely helpful and caring. Anyone who is fortunate to have the surgery done by Dr. Thompson at the Mayo Clinic can be certain they aere being operated on by the best! The Mayo Clinic emphasizes aftercare and provides tons of pre-surgical and post surgical information; much of it in booklets. I live in an isolated part of Michigan, so participating in a structured Mayo aftercare clinic is difficult but they did help me find local support groups. The followup is outstanding and the greatest thing is if a patient has a problem, you can actually talk right to Dr. Thompson with your concerns! I rate Dr. Thompson the best! I had total confidence in his abilities and he did explain the risks to me. His genuine care and concern has been evident everytime I met with him. He really did go the extra mile and I am so very grateful to him.
