Geoffrey Thompson Bariatric Surgeon M.D., F.A.C.S.
Dr. Thompson seemed very nice. I didn't get much chance to talk to him but will have another meeting with him before surgery. He himself had the surgery and that is a comfort to me. His staff are very friendly and take time to answer questions.
I went in to have my drain tube removed. Dr Thompson removed it. I wanted to ask him questions but he was in such a hurry again he didn't stick around to answer them. His nurse did. I am not impressed with him at all but his nurse is wonderful. His bedside manner is not what I was hoping for. I was hoping since he himself had this surgery he would have been more compassionate and eager to answer all my questions but not so. He asked me how my first month went and then he left without even telling me if I will need any follow up appts. Now I don't know what to do.
Dr. Thompson is AWESOME! He is extremely caring in addition to being an extremely competent surgeon. He is very thorough and does not make you feel like you are 'wasting his time'. He goes out of his way to make sure his patient's are comfortable and understand what is/will be happening to them physically and mentally. If you are considering WLS and are coming to Mayo, Dr. Thompson and Dr. Sarr are your best bets. You're in GOOD hands with either of them.
Dr. Thompson seems very nice. Very interested in me as a person. His staff is very professional and friendly. He didn't talk too much about the risks of surgery but others connected to him have gone over those with me. I have heard that he had the surgery himself, but am not absolutely sure about whether or not it is true. If he did he is a walking advertisement for the surgery. He looks great very slim and trim and healthy looking.
My surgeon was Dr. Goeffrey Thompson at the Mayo
Clinic in Rochester, MN. He was a very personable
doctor and he and his staff were wonderful. He
answered all questions I had but didn't seem to
volunteer much information. He had gastric bypass
surgery himself just this past December. If I could
suggest any changes to him, they would be to inform
patients more about what to do before surgery-I had
to mention to them I was taking aspirin and only did
so because I know that it affects clotting. He leaves
aftercare to the endocrinologist that acts as a partner
on his team. A dietitian is also involved on an every
3 month basis for the first year. I will also be
involved with a behavioral modification group. I feel
that since he had this surgery, he is more sympathetic
to what his patients go through and that makes him a
better surgeon. Although I believe that surgical
competency is far more important than bedside manner
I feel lucky that he has both. I would definitely
recommend him to others. I feel that overall my
experience has been very positive.
I am going through the Mayo Clinic in Rochester and they work as a team. Very proffesional and caring group. I am awaiting surgery next month so I will comment more after the surgery.
2 weeks from surgery and I am very pleased. I am a difficult medical patient and they jumped on every slight complication that came up. I did have pnemonia and infected wound. Lot due to diabetes but he has gotten under control and I am home recuperating. The hospital and staff were also wonderful. They emphasize aftercare and will see me in 3 months for the next surgery I need. But until then I will go to support group, regular doctor etc... He is a 10 overall and so is his staff.
He is very mild mannered and mellow! He was very relaxed and made me feel very comfortable. He brought his staff with him and they were all very considerate! I am looking forward to "working" with him and I think right now, I trust him!

I would still like to have Dr. Thompson as my surgeon, but I don't think that I can wait forever for an answer about the Mayo Foundation.
