David Lautz Bariatric Surgeon MD, FACS, FASMBS

The surgeon was very professional. His office staff is great. His adminstrator is a little rough around the edges but knows her job and is alot a fun. The office staff overall are very nice and professional. The program is very well structured and focuses on presurgery and aftercare. They have a program that is focused on wholistic comprehsive care. They have a hotline manned by R.N.s and N.P.s rnThe surgery risks were explained at the information session which is required of all patients and at the initial consult. I was given many occasions to ask questions. They also gave extensive reading material both times. rnI would rate him and the program excellent.

I met with Dr. Lautz on 6/15, he was very nice and explained all aspects of the lap band procedure. I was very comfortable talking with him. I have to say his assistant Eileen is very nice as well. She scheduled everything for me all at once. My first impression was very positive, I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a surgeon.rnrnToday is Feb 9th and I am still praising Dr. Lautz as he is the best surgeon out there. He is wonderful and has made a huge difference in my life. I highly recommend him to anyone thinking about this surgery.

Dr. Lautz was referred to me by a friend who had WLS. By this time, I was discouraged by the idea of WLS for many reasons...most of which were created in my own mind. A few months prior, I had a conversation with a receptionist from another Dr. Office and I was NOT impressed. When I was given Dr. Lautz's name, I called the office and his Secretary, Eileen was more than accommodating and answered my questions. She scheduled me to meet Dr. Lautz 2 months later. In early September 2006, I had my first meeting with Dr. Lautz. I could not have been more impressed by the over-all experience. From the minute I walked through the door, his staff was friendly and professional. I first spoke with his PA, Dorothy. I felt very at ease, which is not my fundamental personality trait to begin with. Then, Dr. Lautz came in and went through everything with me again and sat with me as long as it took to answer my questions. He was kind, professional and more importantly, patient with the time I took to get a clear understanding of the endeavor I was about to enter in to. Every conversation and/or meeting with Dr. Lautz and his staff since my initial meeting, including my surgery date was always pleasant. I would absolutely recommend Dr. Lautz to anyone considering weight loss surgery.

Dr. Lautz seemed extrmely knowledgable from the first time we met and continued to be so throughout the process. His staff is incredible which is a good thing because he seems to be a bit too busy and depends on them quite a bit. I always felt in very capable hands and he quelled many of my fears especially after we discussed his very publicized single mortality from a failed staple gun. I feel as with any medical procedure you as the patient need to be well educated and responsible for your own care. He is very sweet and caring but you do not get to see much of that side because he simply does not have the time. This is not a bad thing because he is so good at what he does he is in great demand. rnrnThe program he works within is extremely structured and no one, if they pay attention, should ever not know what to do and what comes next. I highly recommend him. rnrnPS - his secretary (I hate to call her that) Eileen really takes alot of the stress and pressure off of the whole process.

When I sought an alternative surgery site I asked for recommendations and then went to each hospitals web site. Dr. Lautz is the head of their bariatric program and I later found out he is also on the board for Mass bariatric surgeons. He has tremendous experience which is what I was looking for. I wanted someone who did this surgery so proficient he would be cocky. rnrnI first met Dr. Lautz at the question & answer session. I arrived a bit late due to Boston traffic (arrgh) and found him exactly how he was explained to me. Reserved, appearing shy but has a very dry sense of humor. During his presentation, people kept interrupting him with questions (which I got frustrated with although he did a great job at never showing his frustration...a positive) that were to be on the next slide. In fact one lady was asking the differences between lap and RNY and he asked her if she has an appointment to see a surgeon. She either was late or wasn’t listening to his introduction because she replied that she has an appointment with some doctor named Lautz in two weeks. He chuckled and said, \"I hear he is pretty good!\" rnrnMy appointment with him was rather quick. I found that they over book appointments so plan on being in his office for a bit, but once you meet with him he is all business. He went through my very thick file, thought I needed one more test then asked ME when I would like to have the surgery. When I explained my situation he said he would make it work and then asked me to follow him. He took me to his assistant and said what is the earliest appointment you can give her. When she said you have two on the 13th do you want another he took a deep breath, looked at me and said yes. rnrnMy pre-op appointment was a week before surgery and it too went smoothly. He went over the complications, asked if I had any questions and I was done.rnrnSurgery day - met me before the surgery to again ask if I had questions and if I was sure I wanted to do this... and then we were off. rnrnPost Op - My parents were very impressed with him after surgery. Although he was visibly tired, he stayed with them for about 10 minutes answering their questions and reassuring them I made it through ok. I highly recommend Dr. Lautz. rnrnSuggestions: Know your facts. Dr. Lautz will ask you if you have questions but wont give you lots of warm fuzzy talk time. Ask about pre-op (what you need to do, go over pre op diet with him and ask about your surgery time). rn

Dr Lautz has been fantastic all along. He was very upfront with me about the risks of the surgery. He made sure I understood the entire process and how my body would change. He was kind and very supportive. His wonderful assistant Eileen took very good care of me. She is truly a whiz at her job. She made sure all my appointments with the nutritionist, psychiatrist, and radiology were all scheduled smoothly. If I had a problem with anything I called the office and it was taken care of. I would highly recommend them to anyone considering WLS. I was very impressed with their presentation at the info session. They have extensive aftercare as well. It's great too because if you have an insurance carrier that requires the support group meetings BWH has them for FREE. As far as what I was looking for when I chose Dr Lautz.....definitely surgical competence. He has done the most of the RNY surgeries at BWH. I wanted the best and I got him. I had to wait a bit to get an appt but it was sooooo worth it. Bedside manner is great. But I have family and friends to hold my hand if I need it lol. I give him and his staff a big fat 10!!!!

My first impression of Dr. Lautz was good, he appeared to be the go to guy for this procedure. I had excelent support from the insurance guy, but in my oppinion his secretary could use some people skills.rnI fully trusted dr Lautz with my body, my life and I have absolutely no regrets I did that.rnProcedure was very successfull, I didn't have pains other than on the back because of the hospital bed.rnOverall my experience with Dr. Lautz was excelent, I recomend him in a heart beat and I would not have changed a thing
