I am now six months post-op, have an RNY procedure performed by Dr. Lautz. I am extremely pleased with Dr. Lautz and the entire Emerson Center for Weight Loss team. Everything from the initial information session and consultation through regular post-ops appointments, and everyone from the doctor, NPs, nurses, dietitian, desk staff, etc. have all been extremely professional, helpful, and caring. They guided me through my insurance company's lengthy and complicated process necessary for approval, and made it simple and painless. The surgery went off without a hitch, and it's the best thing I've ever done. Down from 275 to 190 in six months, and loving it. The new lifestyle of eating with the bypass has taken a little getting used to, but that's exactly what I needed to lose the weight and keep it off.
Dr. Lautz is amazing! If you want a doctor who really cares about you, then he's the one you want. When you meet with him he actually listens to what your saying and if you're having an issue then he'll try to work with you to figure it out.
I had my gastric bypass surgery four years ago and I've never regretted it. When I visit the office for checkups and follow ups, it's truly a pleasure. All of the staff are very friendly and helpful. One person in particular is James. He's very personable and if you just want to tell him your problems, he'll listen.
So far, he has been the most compassionate, honest, non judgmental surgeon I have met. Dr. Lautz and his team have been absolutely wonderful so far and I would not change a thing! I know everybody says their Dr is the best, but apparently they are wrong, because Dr. Lautz is! :) I will update this after my procedure (6 days from now) but I am confident my review will not change....... UPDATE: I am now just about 2 weeks post-op. Things went very smoothly with no complications. Dr. Lautz did his part! Safe, thorough surgery! I feel lucky that he was my surgeon and I would recommend him to ANYONE even considering any of the procedures he performs!
Everyone talks about there surgery, I think we should talk about our surgeon. I continue to be a patient of Dr Lautz, and pray that I will always be one. Not that I am speaking of complications, as I am not, I just think he is the greatest. My first and continued impression of him is that he was very caring. My impression has never changed. I think his office staff is totally an extension of him and am fortunate that they are in my corner. The least thing about him is that everyone wants to be one of his patients and sometimes he is a little buzy. However, that being said, I have never felt rushed by him. His whole program is structured and he has a great aftercare program and is very concerned that one stays involved. In trying to determine which is better, I would definitely have to say surgical competence, but in the case of Dr Lautz, one doesn't have to make that choice, as he is above the road in all areas. So do I think of him as great, absolutely. He is the one that changed my life. I have nothing but praise for him. Would I recommend him to other patients; In a heartbeat. I have recommended my family members to him (and I like my family members). Would I trust my life with him and his staff? any day of the week. Would I do it all over again? Only if I knew he was the one in charge. Does this sound to positive, that is because that is how I see him and value him. Prior to a procedure, I might have looked concerned or scared or whatever, the thought was going through my mind. I will never forget how he just stopped in his tracks, (he was heading into the OR after talking with me) and asked me was I alright, was something wrong. It was the look and caring that I saw there, that made me a believer and follower for life. Did I have a negative thought, yes, he refused to do a procedure, I was upset, initially, but realized that it was my safety that he was concerned about. No, I have nothing negative to say about this doctor. He has changed my ife drastically for the good.
My experience with bariatric surgery..... [Edit Post]

I had my surgery 11/28/11, so it's just been a little over a year now. I had the surgery at Brigham & Women's Hospital (BWH). I'm in an National Institute of Health (NIH) study looking at the efficacy of performing roux en-y on patients who are type 2 diabetics, Its called the SLIMMT2D Study. The Joslin Diabetes Center is also involved in the study. I was only in the hospital for 2.5 days. There were no problems with the surgery and to date I have lost well over 100 lbs. I feel great and my blood sugars are in the normal range. I'm off all diabetes medications along with all other medications for high blood pressure and my cholesterol and triglycerides are normal too. This experience has been great and I'm so glad I was chosen to be in this study. Dr. David Lautz was my surgeon and he's great! In fact his entire team is great, especially my study nurse, Kerri Clancey, RN. They have just recently left the BWH and have opened an office with Emerson Hospital. They are lucky to have such a great team of people there. The place is really nice too! It's not too far a walk from the commuter rail so its also very convenient ton get there. Ill be going again in March. Can't wait to see everyone. I am 51 years old and I look and feel like I'm in my 30's. Thanks to everyone involved!!!!
I was recommended Dr. Lautz through a friend of my mom's who had him as her surgeon for the same procedure. I found Dr. Lautz to be a really straight forward person who is passionate about what he does. I was really glad I choose him as my doctor. The staff at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston were amazing both before & after my surgery. The hospital stay was great the nurses were all supportive and friendly. Dr. Lautz made sure to explain the surgery to me, make sure I was aware of what I was getting into, and understand it all. I would recommend him absolutely!
Dr. Lautz and his staff are the BEST! Yes they have a very busy office but I have never felt rushed or been treated impersonally by anyone at his practice. Highly recommended. I am participating in a study there with Joslin Diabetes Clinic called SLIMM T2D and everyone affiliated with them are extremely personable and professional!
my first consultation was on 1-6-11. dr lautz was very short with me. he seemed a little cold to me. i waited a little over two hours for him to see me less than five minutes. the lady at the front desk was sort of rude and very rushed with everyone. i saw eileen when i was done and she just seemed over worked and overwhelmed, though she did seem to know what she was doing and set me up for all of my pre op appoinments. i hope that as time goes on my visits with dr. lautz gets better.his office is very very busy. i was unable to get a surgery date at the consultation appointment but the eileen told me that she would be in touch later in the week.
i am very hopefull that he will do a great job due to all the positive chatter in the waiting room. this was all based on my personal experience.
