I was very impressed with Dr. Herron. I went into my consult knowing I only wanted DS and was a little afraid I was going to spend my entire time convincing him why. That's not what happened at all. We had a very nice discussion and after examining me he said he thought I would be a good candidate for any of the WLS.

Diana Gee(PA) and Irene(MA) were wonderful as well. Diana went over my medical history before I met Dr. Herron and then after my consult I sat with Irene and she went over all the tests I needed to complete.

After I completed all my tests Diana called me and gave me a surgery date. It has all gone so smoothly so far I'm a little amazed.

Now that I am post op I can not say enough good things about my surgical experience. Dr Herron was able to do my BPD/DS lap even though I was full of adhesions from a previous open gall bladder surgery. This has made all the difference in my recovery, I feel great! He is a gifted surgeon with a warm bedside mannor, you can't ask for anything more than that.

Jan 4 2003, I was dissapointed to learn Dr Herron no longer accepts GHI! At least it covered my surgery and 1 post op visit. I can not afford to travel into NYC and pay out of pocket for the visit. so I guess iw ont be seeing the butritionist any longer either which the fee was covered for 1 year. I wish he would have held on to GHI a bit longer...but like I said at least it covered my surgery. i am down 75lbs in under 5 months. and Dr Herron is highly reccomended.

July 3rd- I had all my paper work in super early and I was told by the office all my info went of for pre cert to GHI over 3 weeks ago. well as of today July 3rd GHI has not received on scrap of paper on me!! I am very upset because I feel that the person in charge of ins did not send it out yet and I was told it was sent. OR it was all lost in the mail... I am very upset.I could have done this myself.. But i did not have the surgeons letter etc. I am very upset and nervous I will not be approved in time fr surgery on Aug 2nd now. I will have to bug GHI silly now. I am so upset right now I am crying as I write this. the erson in charger of insurance has yet to call me back, but Diana Gee has been wonderful....just wonderful!! Irenes been great too! I am so nervous. SIGH!!! so my advise is PLEASE follow up on your isurance yourself!!!!!!!! daily if need be.

I met Dr Herron On Thursday. I waited in the waiting room for about an hour, which was not too bad from what I've heard from others. Irene his MS was wonderful and funny and made me feel at comfortable. . Diana his PA was very nice. Dr Herron was was very nice. He spent a lot of time going over surgery and complications. He answered all my husbands questions. My husband was surprised he was so young looking. He was patient and since my husband and I did not agree on which surgery was best, he sent us home to discuss and come to a mutual agreement since he will be my support system. He expalined the risks and was honest about how much more difficult it is to do surgery especially lap on someone my size (very short with a lot of weight in stomach). His office was overall friendly and nice, but they did not have me down for my nutrition consult with Liz Goldenburg and I made the appt months ago. I had to wait a very long time to see Liz. The problem was that someone did not transfer me from the book to the computer so my time slot was given away! Liz was not happy to discover this. the receptionist when i first walked in, gave me the wrong forms to fill out, then assumed I was there before although she never asked me and then 1/2 hour later had to give me another form. But still she was nice about it all. I was not happy about the snafu with my appt and waiting so long when I HAD an appt and drove in from PA, but it all worked out fine. Dr herronhas a good bedside manner and is very personable, intelligent and friendly. he stressed aftercare. I have a ocuple more tests to complete, and then I hope to go on to get my surgery approved (fingers crossed!!) stay tuned...lol

My first impression of Dr Herron was that he knows his stuff. He is a patient man who listened to my questions and answered each and every one. (I had a major list!) He took time to explain each procedure that I was interested in and helped me to decide the best for me. I was originally interested in the DS but have decided to get the RNY and it will be LAP. His support staff, Irene and Diana, rates a 3.75. Both were helpful on my first visit and I look forward to the next. On a scale of 1 to 5 - with 1 the lowest and 5 the highest Dr Herron gets a 5. I also meet with a Dr. Leitman (at Lennox Hill) he rated a 3.5. So I'm definitely sticking with Dr. Herron. After dealing with the support staff now for a few months I rate Diana Gee a 4 and Irene a 2.5.

3/24/01 I have not met Dr Herron yet, but I have emailed him several times with some questions. He always replies within 24 hours and has been very helpful so far. I am looking forward to meeting him at my consultation.

5/3/01 I had my consultation with Dr Herron today. He explained the BPD/DS procedure that I want very thoroughly. He answered many questions without me even asking them. He made sure he addressed the greater risks of this surgery compared to the RNY.
I have more to say about Dr Herron in my regular write-up.

10/10/02 Well it has been over a year since my surgery. I want to say that Dr Herron was great and I really liked him for my surgeon. I wish I were a little closer to NYC so I could go to their support meetings at Mt Sinai.

Dr Herron and his staff made a great lasting impression in me the first time I met them and it has only gotten better, Dr Herron, Diana, and Irene are "ACES" in my book.

Although I haven't met Dr. Herron yet, I did email him to see if he could do anything to advance my appointment which was scheduled for early September, 2001. I was surprised when he emailed me back shortly after and said he would see what he could do. I was even further surprised when one of his assistants emailed me with an appointment date in late July. My first impressions are good. Will update when I mee him. :)
7/26/01 - I met with Dr.Herron and I must say this is the first time I have been to a Doctor's office where the staff has coming looking for me and I wasnt ready :). Dr. Herron was very informative and drew the operation for me. He answered most of my questions before I asked them and I felt very comfortable with him. His staff, Diana and Irene are really nice and easy to deal with. The only thing I dont like is the scope I have to go for. Dr. Herron answered all my questions even the difficult ones with a straight forward attitude and honest and open manner. I am scheduled for surgery on 9/25/01, sooner if I can get the paper work done faster.
I had my surgery on 11/30/01 and when I first opened my eyes in recovery all I could think was PAIN MEDS PLEASE!!! The pain soon subsided and except for a small lung problem I had an uneventful stay in the hospital. Dr. Herron and the hospital staff at Mt. Siani were wonderful. I was up and about doing regular things a few days after release. Unfortunately the person I used to work for fired me 3 days before my surgery so two weeks post op I was out in Manhattan looking for a job. The up side to that is that it has hastened my recovery immensely. All in all I have not experienced any of the horror stories I have heard or read about, I am tolorating foods well and trying to get my liquids in. Will write more after my drs. visit on 12/20/01.
I am now almost 6 months post op and over 100lbs lighter...I developed a stricture and had to be dilated three times but now i can even get part of junior wopper in when i am in the mood...

I met with Dr. Herron Yesterday, 1/24/02. I liked him VERY much. He was patient, kind, informative and funny. He put me at ease immediately. His office staff is less than perfect, to put it KINDLY. His PA is nice enough and knowledgeable, but rushes you like the building is on fire. This happens on the phone and in person. His MA is abrupt and has precious little patience. She is not especially nice, and is not always clear in the information she gives. She also actually yelled at my mother on the phone when my mom asked her to clarify something! The front office staff was confused, and was WAY more interested in discussing food, LOUDLY, as well as eating it at the desk, both before and after my appt. than they were interested in assisting me. But...although this is unprofessional, they aren't doing my surgery so I can live with that. Overall, I feel I have made the right choice. Now I have to get my insurance to pay for it-with a BMI of 36 this may prove to be tricky! These are my experiences, and although others I have spoken to through this site are in agreement with me, another person might have a different experience. Remember, Dr. Herron's staff are only "the gatekeepers"! Although at times it almost seems like they are trying to make your pre op journey more difficult than need be, once the surgery is over your dealing with them is pretty much over, and now that today-May 2, 2002- I am officially Post Op, I can say that the important person in all this, Dr. Herron himself, is wonderful and just what you want in a surgeon!

Dr. Herron is a genius! From the moment I first met him I knew I made the right choice. The support group I attend at Mt. Sinai once a month has been so helpful. The only negative is that I had to wait several hours for my first appointment but now I can say it was well worth the wait! Dr. Herron took his time and explained everything to me. Having this surgery was the best decision I could have made for myself!
