From my first appointment with Dr. Long at Nicholson Clinic, I felt supported. I knew that everyone had my best health in mind, mentally and physically. EVERYONE was so kind and took the time I needed to feel comfortable and understand every detail of the process. I had a consultation with several clinics and was blown away by my experience with Nicholson Clinic. I was walked through my surgery options in detail and a plan was set for my needs. My caseworker helped with insurance and we all know how difficult navigating that can be. Everything was packaged up in a fantastic folder for me to take home and review. But it didn't stop there, support is available all the time. I know I can call, email, post in the support group, check archived documents, attend classes - online and in person, join support groups...well as you can see the resources are almost limitless. Post surgery, I thought "well their part is over and now the rest is up to me" and that couldn't be further from the truth. I still feel just as supported as when I first walked in the door. Every follow up visit is a celebration of how well I am doing and motivation to keep pushing. I have had very few concerns but every email, phone call, and request has been met with concern, urgency and reassurance. I am so pleased with my entire experience with Nicholson Clinic and I could not have done this with out everyone there.
I have been overweight my entire adult life, eventually getting up to 297 pounds. I tried losing weight on my own through dieting and was able to lose 30 pounds by switching from drinking regular Coke to Coke Zero. My health kept getting worse and I was on 3 blood pressure medications along with medicine for diabetes, cholesterol, kidney function, reflux, gout, thyroid...etc. I was taking 12 medications in total.
On 7-18-18, Dr. Long performed VSG surgery and repaired a hiatal hernia. He has such a gentle manner and exudes confidence. Within a few months, I was able to be off most of the medications. By six months, I am now only taking the thyroid medication (and will for life). I began working out with a personal trainer at Ultima Fitness in Plano, TX and am in the best shape I've been in since college. The picture of me "after" is in a two piece swim suit which I haven't worn one since college.
I still have a ways to go to reach my ultimate goal of 150 pounds but I have lost 100 pounds from my highest weight and my knees and body thank me daily for that! I am healthy which was my primary goal when I elected to have this surgery. It wasn't easy by any means - but well worth the struggles.
The Sibley Weight Loss Surgery Center is fantastic. I had RNY surgery there a year ago and can say it was the best decision I made. Dr. Long and his staff are thorough, caring and responsive to the needs of the patient. They treat the whole person. I have been so pleased with my care from the initial appointment to all the follow ups. Even now a year out, Dr. Long still wants to follow up with me for the next year as well.
Being successful in your weight loss journey is what Dr. Long and his staff pursue with vigor. I would recommend Sibley and Dr. Long to anyone.

My journey at Sibley Memorial Hospital Center for Weight Loss started in March 2012. I had to complete 6 months of supervised nutritionist counseling before my insurance would approve me for surgery. After attending a few Bariatric seminars around the DC area, I knew Sibley was the place for me after meeting Dr. Long and his staff. They are ALL knowledgeable about all aspect of Bariatric Surgery and took their time explaining each procedure and the process to me. Dr. long and his staff have always been available to answer any questions and concerns I’ve had during and after my surgery. My surgery was on October 1, 2012, and as of today I still see Dr. Long and Jodie for my scheduled follow up visits. Jodie Hofacre the nutritionist is AMAZING!!!! She will be my nutritionist for the rest of my LIFE. She keeps me accountable, always has new information/knowledge, and is available when needed. She always returns my calls and/or emails in a timely manner.
Save yourself the time and just go to Sibley. It is truly a ONE-STOP SHOP (psychologist, nutritionist, personal trainer, monthly support groups, etc). Ms. Carolyn has the program down to a science and makes sure you keep on track with the required appointments before and after your surgery. As someone else mentioned, the entire staff at Sibley Hospital are EXCELLENT. Bedside manner is top notch.
If I had to do it all over again, I would back to Dr. Long at Sibley. The program speaks for itself.
By the way: My starting weight was 261 pounds (day of surgery) and as of May 1, 2014 I got down to 138 pounds. Currently I go up and down between 5-8 pounds.
Dr. Long and his staff are very knowledgeable about all aspects Bariatric Surgery. The staff are very patient and understand what it takes to get you to your surgical date. Dr. Long is excellent with taking his time explaining the process and procedures of all weight loss surgeries and helps you make a decision on which surgery would be best for you. Jodie Hofacre, the nutritionist, is fantastic in helping you to prepare for your surgery as well as keeping you on track after weight loss surgery. The entire team is outstanding! I couldn't have picked a better group to work with on making such an important decision.
I really like and respect Dr. Long. He is an excellent general surgeon with a specialization in bariatric surgery. The whole staff at Sibley Hospital is excellent. They are not rigid at all. They give patients a lot of latitude in deciding what is best for them. Brian Wallace, the nurse practitioner and program director is very knowledgeable as he is a previous bypass patient himself. Dr. Long has an excellent bedside manner and gives each of his patients the best of care. I really like the one-on-one assistance they give me. At my first introductory appointment, I met first with Brian for the Information Session and then met with Dr. Long who helped me decide on the best surgery based on my medical history. I had previously been to an introductory session at a different hospital, a Center of Excellence with 6 surgeons, but was totally turned off there. I am very happy with my decision to work with Dr. Long and the rest of his program staff.
The following statement is my personal experience and is strictly my opinion.
My surgery was performed by Dr. Long on June 12, 2012. Dr. Long and his staff and the entire staff at Sibley Hospital are EXCELLENT. From the moment I walked into my first seminar and met Dr. Long and his staff I felt at ease. He is thorough, patient and understands what everyone is going through and the problems they encounter carrying extra weight. Dr. Long took his time with me, I never felt rushed and he never appeared to be in a hurry. He explained every in detail and took time addressing questions.
Brian Wallace, Caroline, Judy are all great and very patient.
