Barry Greene Bariatric Surgeon MD, FACS

I just made my first support group meeting appt for Jan 10th. I have heard many good things about Dr. Greene, but have yet to meet him. He is the 3rd doctor I have looked into for this surgery. The first, Dr. Miller, is no longer doing the surgery, the 2nd, Dr. Afram is not a network surgeon approved by my insurance, TriCare, so now I am going to Dr. Greene.

My first impression of Dr. Cantor was that he was not very personable. I mean he just stated the facts and that was it. I did not receive a warm fuzzy feeling from him.

I liked that he was honest and made sure that I knew about the risks associated with weight loss surgery.

His surgical competence so far has far outweighed his bedside manner.

My first impression of Dr. Greene wasn't the greatest. I saw him at a support group meeting and I didn't like the way he fielded questions from the group. However, my cardiologist HIGHLY recommended him, and I spoke to several people who had had him do their surgery and they glowed about him. So, I decided to take a second look, and I'm glad I did. The second time I saw him at the group meeting, he was much better and I had no hesitation whatsoever in selecting him as my surgeon. I was quite impressed with his extensive, extremely thorough pre-op testing and very strict post-op procedures. Dr. Greene did a fantastic job on my LAP RNY and my panniculectomy. He's a very skilled surgeon who ensures that his patients are knowledgeable about the surgery and committed to making the necessary life changes to succeed in their weight loss. He's very straightforward. He won't "pattycake" you, but if you're having a problem, HE WILL BE THERE! His office staff is great -- very friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and caring.

Very cautious, great bedside manner, experienced and highly recommended by my PCP and Gastroenterologist.

My first impression is that he is very serious and very hard core.
My impressions has changed a bit, He is hard core and serious but he is a very good surgeon and highly recommended. He has us doing things that a lot of other surgeons do not. I guess that is why his morality rate is zero and his complication is very low.
I have talked to several people who have had surgery by him and they are all very happy and satisfied with him.

My surgery is scheduled for October 4th and I am thrilled and scared.

One thing that did upset me about Dr Greene is when I gained a little bit of weight he practically jumped down my throat. At the time I thought very low and more insecure because if I didn't have this problem then I wouldn't be in his office in the first place. But I have since gotten over those feelings and moving on towards my big day.

My first impression of Dr. Greene was that he was very strict. He also conveyed a feeling of responsibiity toward his patients and I do feel that he cared about me as as person. I have pretty much kept the same impression of Dr. Greene. He is very strict. His staff was nice, I didn't have many problems with them. They are busy so often I had to call back if I left a message. The least thing I liked about Dr. Greene was that he was abrupt. I didn't feel like I could tell him everything because he only wanted to hear that I had obeyed his orders to the T. I've never met anyone who didn't sing the praises of Dr. Greene so for future patients I say go see him for an intial visit and use their own discretion. I personally feel that the aftercare instructions were very stilted and I had to rely on outside resources to get the information I needed. It led me to be very frustrated and angry. Inside the packet of paperwork that you have to sign stressed the risks of surgery and the importance of understanding. It wasn't spoken about in depth. Overall he was a great physician with mediocre skills in patient relations. Both superior surgical competence and bedside manner are the optimal goals however if I had to choose again I would still choose surgical competence because when all is said and done there are outside resources to help you but in the surgery room it can only be your physician.

Dr. Greene at first seemed very serious.

His support meetings and informational talks are outstanding. He stresses that we be treated with dignity and respect. His staff is at the meetings and are very encouraging and helpful. He has a very specific program you must complete before you can get your date, and he is very cautious. This can be frustrating; however, I think that I will have excellent results because of the care given pre-op. If you don't comply with his pre-op eating plan, he will cancel your surgery. With all the precautions prior to surgery, I am looking forward to a quick and successful recovery.

I met Dr. Greene in December of 2003 at one of the informational seminars he does twice a month. The presentation was factual and he was very honest about what to expect from the surgery and also what the practice expected of the patient. It is a joint venture. . not an easy fix. I found Dr. Greene to be very knowlegable and passionate about helping the obese patient. His staff is very compassionate and attentive. He has great follow up, and is very specific as to what to do following the surgery. There is also a support group meeting twice a month. He makes sure you understand the risks of surgery. You are educated, and he even give a "quiz" to make sure you understand the procedure and risks. No surprises. My surgery was quick, just as described, and my recovery was fast and uneventful. His bedside manner and surgical competence are both great. I have no regrets. Because he is so busy, his one fault is that "sometimes he is not on schedule for office visits" but, he is working on that and Thursdays visit, I hardley waited at all. On the upside of that, it's most likely because he does not rush through the patients visit with him, so he could get behind schedule once in a while! That's okay, I just amuse myself with a book! Small price to pay.
