Armando Joya Bariatric Surgeon M.D.
Liked Dr. Joya a lot; Pre-surgery and immediately after surgery everyone was very good about making sure I was ok. He took very good care of me surgically - I had no problems whatsoever. rnrnPost-surgery however; the only time I have heard from anyone (and then it was only his assistant - Nathalie) was when I sent her two emails with questions and she responded to the emails and nothing since.rnrnI would certainly recommend him for his surgical competence and his bedside manner but his aftercare program and follow-up with post surgery patients could use some improvement even if they do live out of the country.
My first impression of Dr Joya was that he was a very genuine and caring doctor. I only saw him briefly right before and after surgery. Before I went into the OR he held my hand and let me know that I was in very good hands which made me feel a lot better. His staff was wonderful, the nurses and doctors were all very caring and attentive.. most of the nurses don't speak English but tried very very hard to talk to me and make sure that I was comfortable. After surgery he had a doctor that came in every day to talk to me and check up on me to make sure that I was healing okay. After the four days in the hospital were up, I went back to the resort to continue healing (both the resort and the hospital were GORGEOUS, the hospital is like a marble palace).. I still had communication with the hospital and Jorge (the doctor) came by the resort each morning to see me still. I received all of the paperwork for my blood tests, written explanation of what happened during surgery, aftercare information and contact information for Dr Joya and his staff before I left Puerto Vallarta. All in all, my experience in PV couldn't have gone better. I am thrilled with my decision to have Dr Joya as my surgeon and would do it again in a heartbeat. To those who fear going to Mexico- Don't. I received better care in PV than I ever have in Canada or the United States. I highly recommend Dr Joya and his staff. :)
Surgery went well; however, I didn't meet the surgeon prior to being in the operating room so I didn't get a chance to chat or ask any questions. I saw him very briefly afterwards, probably for less than a minute, the following day. His assistant, Nathalie, however, was excellent, available, and answered all my questions.
Dr. Joya was friendly and reassuring. I didn't really get to see him for a long time, but he answered all my questions before surgery. The next day he came to see me to see how I was doing. His staff have been good at answering any questions I have had since the surgery.rnI have no complaints about the care I recieved and would recommend Dr. Joya to anyone considering WLS.
My first impression was that he was very competent. That feeling remained, though I really saw very little of him. His staff was great, especially Nathalie, his assistant. There was not too much discussion about aftercare. I really had to learn a lot on-line. The directions from the doctor were quite brief. The risks ere addressed in print and by his assistant. Overall i would rate him a 9/10. I felt her was incredibly experienced, and even though I came to Mexico from Canada, I was well taken care of. The hospital was great - very clean. I met three of the 5 doctors that were in the operating room and they were very professional. The nurses do not speak a lot of English, but i was surprised at how well I made out. Bringing a support person makes everything go so much better!rnrnThe only small criticism was that the flight that they booked on my behalf had too many stops and it took a very long time to get home two days later. I would take a more involved role in the flight booking so that I could get the most direct flight home. I was pretty thrashed by the time I had been traveling for 12 hours!
My whole experience was AMAZING, never once have I doubted my decision to go to Dr. Joya for my RNY. In the US you have your doctor visit you while in the hospital, in Puerto Vallarta there were at least 3 if not 5 doctors that came in every day to check on me. They were all so kind and caring, not the little 30 second visits like you get in the US because your doc is to busy for you right then. The nurses were so good, most of them spoke enough english to get by, and besides, I can't fault their english skills because my spanish skills are non-existant. But there was never a time that there was a communication problem we couldn't overcome. The hospital was soooo clean, and the housekeeping staff were always very nice as well...one lady saw me walking without slippers(my feet were hot) and the next thing I know she is helping me slide slippers on my feet. Natalie is just a ball of enegery, she is so knowledgable and helpful, she has a way of making you feel like you have known her forever. The risks and benifits of the surgery were gone over, and never did I feel pressured or hurried to get the paperwork done. The aftercare is given to you in written form, and I will follow with my PCP this first year, but my husband and I were talking about how nice it would be to take a cruise in a year and do my 1 year followup with Dr. Joya. DO NOT let Mexico scare you, I got much better care in Mexico that I would have gotten in the US, and as a RN it is almost embaressing to say that, as a paitent in Mexico it was amazing, comforting and exciting.
My first impression of Dr. Joya was that he looked young and was very nice. I actually met him on my way to surgery.rnrnThe staff at the hospital were very nice. They all came in regularly to check on me. The only problem was the language barrier. None of the nurses spoke english, so it was difficult for me to ask for things other than by signing.rnrnYou are given a packet on aftercare of foods to eat, when to move from clear liquids to full liquids to blended foods to normal eating.rnrnRisks are given and explained to you up front, so you can ask questions if you want.rnrnOverall I am very happy with my experience and surgery.rnrnI think surgical competence was excellent. Bedside manner was good.rnrn
