Armando Joya Bariatric Surgeon M.D.
Had surgery with Dr Joya. Everything went great. He came to visit me before surgery and I felt very confident in his abilities. He has a very competent staff and the facilities are top notch. His team are always very responsive to questions before and after surgery. I would definitely recommend Dr Joya.
Dr. Joya and his entire staff was wonderful. I didn't spend much time with Dr. Joya himself, just a few minutes right before surgery, but he was very nice. Dr. Olivares, another Doc on his staff, spent the entire pre-op waiting time with me explaining anything I needed to know. He was patient and kind and a wonderful man. All of the nurses were kind and caring. Nathalie, Dr. Joya's assistant spent a lot of time with us and she is wonderful as well. She went over all of the risks, aftercare, took me from the hospital to the hotel and was available by cell phone at any time. Gerald, who set up the whole trip, was also great. I emailed him a gazillion times and he answered very promptly. The nurses were great. Most of them spoke enough English to be understood, but my limited Spanish helped as well. The Krystal Hotel was nice. The rooms were nice and clean. You can see that the resort was old, though. My husband didn't care much for the food there, but he doesn't like spicy foods. I would most likely stay somewhere else if I visit PV again. The aftercare was spelled out, but somewhat limited. For instance, it explained one needs to take calcium supplements, but not how many milligrams per day. But there are many references to following up with your pcp or dietician. Overall, I would highly recommend Dr. Joya and his team to anyone.
I only met Dr. Joya twice. Once immediately before surgery and once the next day for about 5 minutes. He seemed very nice, but I didn't get to spend much time with him. I would've liked to have had more time talking to him before the surgery. It all happened so fast that I didn't even know what to say.rnrnRight as I was wheeled into the operating room, I met Dr. Joya and he held my hand and comforted me while they put me out. I was crying and very scared. It was nice to have somebody there to hold my hand.rnrnI don't think I could've afforded the surgery in the United States. If you HAVE to go to Mexico, I would definitely recommend Dr. Joya. You won't get some of the hand holding all along the way as you do in the States with a local support group. However, if you have a supportive partner and can get your peer support from the Internet, then it is definitely an affordable alternative.
I went to PV in March 2006. I had a good experience there. I am a critical care nurse and felt that the nursing care there isn't as advanced as it is here, but the care I received from Dr. Joya and his team was outstanding. Dr. Oliveras (Dr. Joya's associate) was just precious! I wanted to bring him home with me. I think Dr. Joya's surgical competence is above the average bariatric surgeon, but he didn't spend as much time with me as I would have liked....probably because he has such a profoundly busy practice. He's busy for a reason...he's great! I got top notch customer service from everyone involved. The Krystal Hotel staff are very accomodating, the nurses are very sweet and answer call lights much faster than in the US. Dr. Oliveras took me to my hotel when I was discharged from the hospital and even carried my luggage.....you won't see that in the US! The hospital was clean, the anesthesiologist was very nice and sympathetic to my near panic when I rolled into the OR. I am 4 months out, have lost 70 lbs and have had absolutely no complications. I have gone from a size 20-22 to a size 14 in four months! My labs are great and I am feeling awesome. Natalie is so cool she makes things go so smoothly and has a great sense of humor! I highly recommend this team. Aftercare is obviously a bit more challenging, but as I have had no problems at all, I am just following up with my family doctor. Another girl was there when I was and had to go back to surgery for an unscheduled second procedure related to postoperative bleeding, she left PV on time and is doing well. These are just my experiences and I would take a family member there to see him.
I found him to be a very nice man who came across as interested in his paitent..His whole team made me feel like I was in good hands...I found the Cornerstone Hospital to be very modern and clean the nurses came quickly if called....All the bad stories about going to Mexico were all unfounded in this case....I had a top notch experience and I feel top notch care.......I would refer him to anyone who will listen......do not hesitate if considering him as your choice you will be happy
