Antonio Macatol Bariatric Surgeon M.D.

my 1st impression on dr. macatol was that...he was such a little guy...and how could he understand what i'm going thru...as we went thru the meeting.( it was very personal..only 4 people.) he answer every question that i had. we over the overhead slid show showing what he would be doing..advise that you would see him..for all care before and after not the nurse or prn. he also stated that you would see him for the rest of your life..once every 6 months. he strongly believes in the support group he has them 2x a month in the waterbury office and 1 a month in the torrington office and he attend the meeting which is great if you have any question or concern. he advise that all surgery are a risk but when u have this surgery u have to be committed to the program or just forget about doing it..

My first impression of Dr. Macatol was that..."wow, he is really small...he must need a step ladder to get around all of our large bodies!!!" He was wonderful! VERY informative and seemed quite passionate about what he does. My first visit with him was prompt and thorough. He made sure that I knew exactly what the surgery entailed and the risks of surgery. He was very happy to answer any of the MANY questions I had.
Dr. Macatol is HUGE on support groups; before, during and after this journey. He also recommended this site for further information. Dr. Macatol is VERY strict about aftercare. You must attend support groups {which are monthly} and see him every 6 months, well...forever! In that small man is tremendous heart who has already saved many lives!
His right hand woman, Joyce...has been wonderful as well. At times she definately seems overloaded, but she pulls through. I did not have to deal with my insurance company at all, Joyce did all that.
I would rate Dr. Macatol and Joyce, overall about a 9 out of 10! They make a wonderful team

On my first visitI really was impressed with Dr Macatol's knowledge of the surgery and the statistics. My second visit,I was even more impressed, due to the fact that he made special arrangements to see me and was very thorough with his exams.Joyce was a sweetheart, I have been such a pain and she has never once lost her temper and was pleasant at all times. If there is anything I think a new patient should know, would be that he is very straight forward and knows his stuff.Dr Macatol is a great believer of after care and support, and has a very structured aftercare plan. The doctor is very straight forward about the risks of surgery.I would have to rate the doc on a scale of 1-10, about a 9. I must say that both his surgical competence and bedside matter are both wonderful.

My first impression was mixed emotions not knowing what to expect. After my consultaion all my concerns were put to ease. He took plenty of time to explain the pre approval process and the procedure to make sure I understood what would be happening. Several times during the meeting Dr. Macatol stressed the importance of meeting afterward and a support group which he has in his office every other tuesday night.
I found the office staff so far easy to work with, Joyce gave me a list of test and people I needed to see and I made my own appointments so there would be no problem with scheduling.
I started in the end of nov. 2002 and had all the test she told me I needed done by Jan
4 2003. Now the process seems to have slowed down I was now told I need a respirtory and stress test. These I cannont make for myself so I am waithing to hear from the offices she calls for me. I am hoping to have my surgury at the end of Jan. or 1st week of Feb. 2003.
This man is great. After my surgery om 03/03 early morning he was back in my room at 10 to 11 pm to chat. he is vey intresting. At first i thought this different till the next night he was in from 10 to 11 again and i was more awake and at least able to respond to him. After checking with the nurses this is what he does with his patients and they also told me he is known to go to there home to check on them. I would highly recomend him to anyone.

When I called to make an appointment with Dr. Macatol, Joyce said that appointments are not made until you attend a seminar by Dr. Macatol. The seminar is to inform you what to expect with this type of surgery. My husband and I attended the seminar. I found him to be very informative and open to any questions that we asked. I then called the next day and made an appointment. The appointment was made for the following week. I was amazed I was able to see him so quickly.
Dr. Macatol gave a very thorough examination. I was surprised at how tiny his examining room was, this I was not crazy about, but if that is my only complaint that is not too bad! He again explained the procedure, and stressed the importance of following instructions and the lifetime aftercare involved. He also highly recommends you attend a support group meeting no matter what stage of the journey you are in. I did attend a support meeting which I found very helpful. He sits in on the meetings to answer any questions, however he does not participate unless asked. It is the patients' meeting, not his, and I thought that was very respectful of him.
After my appointment, Joyce went over what needed to be done next. I found she was very helpful also. They make a great team.

Preop - 11/5/02 - Dr. Macatol is a fine surgeon with many years experience. His concern for his patients is overwhelming and refreshing. He treats his patients as humans and not as another dollar walking through the door. I had some concerns about the type of incision he was going to perform. I brought my concerns to him, he happily answered my questions and explained in detail why he was chosing the particular incision he wanted to use. I felt like he really listened to me...and to top it all off, he called me back 3 times that day to make sure he could answer my questions. He finally reached me at 9:30pm. He didn't give up. Thanks, Doctor Mac!

Dr. Macatol is a very kind and caring person. I admit I didn't feel comfortable with him at first. But I soon knew that this was the man that would do my WLS. He is very
knowledgeable and "ALL" his patients are doing great. He wants to make sure that all his patients "will" follow his instructions and attend the WLS support meetings after the surgery before he will accept them as patients. Aftercare is very important to Dr Macatol. He stresses that true success is achieved by following aftercare rules forever.
His office staff in Torrington is Joyce. I'm not sure if he has any others in his Waterbury office. I know that Joyce works in both places.
Let me tell you about Joyce. WOW. She is God's gift to WLS patients. She has spent hundreds of hours researching everything about WLS and called Insurance Companies to see what they required. Then she organized everything she learned. Nothing was left out. She is a very kind and caring person. She does "EVERYTHING". I didn't have to do anything but make sure I went to the appointments she made for me. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the best, I give Joyce 100 plus.
For future patients of Dr. Macatol, all I can say is that he is one of the best and I trust him totally.
