Everything went perfect, I worked with his assistant a lot (unfortunately I cannot remember his name). I honestly cannot say enough about the team in Danville. I feel you work with the surgeons only a short time compared to the time that is spent with the actual bariatric unit. Those individuals from the moment you walk in the door and are greeted by the receptionists are hands down the best individuals I have worked with in any capacity of my life in a very long time. I owe them a lot and they have taken excellent care, are very responsive I just could not say enough about the care I received from them. Back to the surgeons, I feel I saw Petrick two or three times, very approachable, to the point and welcoming. His assistant I met with a more, and he was present after surgery and for follow up’s. What I really enjoyed about the surgery team is the fact that I did not ever feel like a number. Yes they got right down to business (which fits my personality) but if I had a genuine concern they took the time to answer and make me feel comfortable. I felt I knew exactly what the expectations where when I left the room and if I ever needed a question answered it was not a fight to get there. The day of surgery it was a needed calm knowing these gentlemen were going to be changing my life. I am happy healthy and almost a year out. I felt they took excellent care of me through the whole process and I would not be afraid to contact any of the team in Danville for help. Excellent program, phenomenal team of care providers and a clean environment.
I am a patient of Dr. Petrick's and have my surgery scheduled for March 15, 2013. My surgery is different from most of his patients. I am having my total stomach removed. They are going to be attaching my esphogus to my intestines. The reason for doing this surgery is that I have two rare stomach diseases for my age. Dr. Diehl and Dr. Petrick had converstaions with other doctors around the country and international about my case to make sure that this is the right surgery for me.
Upon meeting Dr. Petrick for the first time, he knew who I was before I walked into the door and said he was expecting me. I had some questions about the surgery but, that alone made me feel at easy.
I am looking forward to get this done and hopefully avoid the chance for what I have to turn to cancer.
Again, my 2nd time around with Geisinger Bariatric Department has been a wonderful experience. The entire team from Dr Still to Dr Petrick in General Surgery are wonderful. They are very upfront about what to expect, make you go through a vetted process to confirm you are indeed ready for this huge step in your life both physically and mentally. I applaud them and give the entire team a high "5"
Dr Petrick is a very knowledgable surgeon. He takes the time to sit and explain everything.
The office staff are all very nice.
After care if followed up by Gastro/Nutrition Department, Dr Still. He is very sweet and caring.
Dr Petrick came in on saturday to see me in the hospital. I was amazed.. most Dr's in my experience send in a replacement on the weekend. Not Dr Petrick or Dr Still. They both came to check on me.
I would rate both physicians with a 100%
The entire Geisinger Bariatric program is top notch! I've had classes, support groups, many visits with providers in GI Nutrition, and one comprehensive visit with the surgeon's staff. Many visits were in local offices so that I did not need to make the trip to Danville. Everyone was very kind and knowledgeable. Risks of surgery were laid out plainly on many occasions, and there was never any pressure to proceed with the surgery.
At the hospital, and surgical team was wonderful. I've been in a few recovery rooms in other hospitals that were cold and terrifying, but this one was warm and comfortable and the staff very attentive. I was in a regular hospital bed that could be tilted up to my liking, and it went with me to my room so that I did not need to change beds. I had visits from 3 physicians each day: a surgical fellow, a surgeon, and a GI Nutrition physician.
The aftercare program is also structured. I was given clear discharge instructions including contacts if I have any problems. A follow-up visit is scheduled, the team will follow me for the rest of my life, and support groups are on-going.
My only complaints are as follows:
I did not see much of Dr. Petrick. I had one office visit, and the next time I saw him was the morning after my surgery. He did not speak to me before my surgery, but I did see the surgical fellow. I guess this is typical in a teaching hospital.
The hospital stay should be longer. I was out on the 3rd day after a miserable night of excruciating bowel pain. The patients who live near the hospital typically leave on the 2nd day. This is probably related to insurance coverage. I did feel worried about coming home so soon, and I am having trouble taking in enough nutrition.
Regarding the gas pain, it was the worst pain of my life, and I have been through several surgeries and gallstones. The nurse tried all night to get me Simethicone which did not show up until morning. The pain meds had done little to ease my pain in the meantime. Why not have Simethicone ordered and at the ready?
Will meet for the first on 1/25/2011
Had surgery on 3/4/2011. Dr. Petrick and his staff are amazing. It's nice when you talk to someone and they listen. knock on wood, no problems (ok only 1, but that came out ok, lol) so far. I'm considering myself lucky. I'm up walking around the house and treadmill and of course spending quality time with my cats since I'm still off work. I only have a little yellow bruising around the 6 incisions I have.
