Wes Powell, M.D. Bariatrics Bariatric Center
My first impression of Dr. Powell was very favorable. He treated me like an intelligent human being! Impression has not changed. His staff is also great. I was in a great hurry to get things set up and was traveling a lot to get my schedule cleared for the time off. They were great about contacting me when needed by pager and phone so I didn't waste any time. The only thing I would change about this office would be to get them online and with email.
I am only 3 days post surgery and doing well. More later.
My first impression of him was that he seemed gentle, very knowledgable, an excellent communicator and listener.
My contact with him in the hospital didn't change my initial impression. He is very kind, and has a good sense of humor also!
His office staff is organized and seem well in-tune to overweight patients.
The Bariatric Program's Coordinator is Debbie Gold. Her assistant is Kim Malley and they do an excellent job. Kim sent me their bariatric surgery book explaining everything in detail. It is my bible for now. The aftercare is outlined in great detail and the reasons why for such valuable care for healing, good eating habits, and an overall sense of well being.
The 4 month diet is outlined in easy steps which the patient can vary to his/her own schedules. One is for home and one is for work. I am very impressed with Dr. Wes Powell and his office staff. I would rate him overall as an excellent Surgeon and Doctor who not only has surgical skill and wisdom, but also has comforting bedside manners.
Dr. Powell made a wonderful impression. He is warm, caring and very professional. He has a quiet aura of confidence that I found very reasuring. He took the time to listen and to answer all of my questions and concerns. He very carefully to emphasized that RNY is a serious operation. That it is a life changing procedure and that once undergone the patient must have followup care for the rest of his or her life.
He has a very efficient office staff and the program director, Debbie is wonderful. There is an aftercare program. It seems to be a complete one. All of the things needed for a healthy recovery are provided for. Surgical competence is number one in my book. If a surgeon has a great bedside manner then that is a bonus.
Dr. Powell is the third surgeon I have seen. Wasn't comfortable with surgeon one because of his lack of lap experience. Surgeon two was not board certified and I didn't really care for the hospital he practiced at. I must say that I feel completely comfortable with Dr. Powell doing the surgery. He has great experience in lap procedures and took extensive time during our appt. explaining the procedure in detail. He patterns his practice after Dr. Higa in Fresno who is one of the best. I was most impressed with his honesty and his sincere feelings about how this surgery is gratifying to see his patients lives change. I also love the fact that the surgery will take only about 1 1/2 hours, I go home after about 24 hours, and the hospital where he preforms the surgery has all private rooms. I'm sold and have a surgery date of July 8th.

One week post surgery and I give Dr. Powell an A+. Being in the medical field I am a critic but he definitely deserves this grade. His surgical skills are incredible (2 hours for RNY plus removal badly diseased gallbladder). Very compassionate came to see me at the hospital sometimes 2 or 3 times a day. My post-op has been unremarkable and after one week I feel incredible with lots of energy and no pain. I am so happy I chose Dr. Powell for my surgeon.
My initial consult with Dr. Powell was great. He is very knowledgable and experienced; I am confident with him as my surgeion. He spent plenty of time with me and clearly explained all of the benefits and risks that are involved with this type of surgery. He conducts symposiums each month and also encourages participation in a support group that meets weekly.
My understanding is that Dr. Powell's normal office person is out on maternity leave. Her replacement, Kim, seems to be good, but as can be expected with a new person - things can get a little mixed up. For my initial appointment, there was a mix up on what day the appointment was. Then my insurance company told me that they did not get the surgery or pre-op testing requests from my Dr. Powell's office. Dr. Powell's office said they sent it in several times, so I'm not sure where the problem was. The good news is that everything has worked out so far. Kim followed up with my insurance company and made sure they got everything.
I thought he was great! very comfortable to be with. He answered all my questions. Was very kind and patient. Plus I got to hear him both him and his partner, Dr. David Lourie, present at their Symposium they hold at Huntingon Memorial Hospital for their prospective patients. It was great. A lot of their post-op patients were there to field questions from the audience after the lecture. I felt totally at ease after listening to everyone and seeing the actual video of the surgical procedure itself.
Dr. Powell is a soft spoken man with an easy manner about him that makes you feel calm just being in his presence. He seems very up to date on everything.
I actually have my initial private consult with him on Tuesday,June 11th. So these impression were from just meeting him and talking with him at the symposium.
I went to California to meet my doctor on March 26th. I made it a great Spring Break for my kids. I was very proud of myself for driving all the way from Colorado by myself! Dr. Powell was a great laid back kind of guy. He was friendly but a little quiet. The comments you might have read about him are true! My sister had her surgery on 2/28/02 and she couldn't stop raving about him. His right hand man (ok, woman, Debbie :} ) is currently on maternity leave but I begged her to get all of my paperwork in order before her temporary replacement (Kim) took over. Debbie made this such a piece of cake that I think that we all love Dr. Powell because of the great job this lady does!!! I think I received the information from him at the consult because of all my questions. So, be prepared to ask your doctor all the questions you have. Good luck and God Bless!
He was a very Nice Man! I met him the one time and he explained everything to me in great detail! The staff in his office is GREAT! They helped walk me through the whole insurance process and I was approved and had pre-certification within 2 weeks. This particular office likes the date of your initial consultation and the surgery be "about a month" in my case, it will be a month and a half! Overall I would rate him a A+ and his assistant DEBBIE a AAAAA++++++ I just love that lady, she is so wonderful!
I don't have enough good words for this office. Everyone has made me feel great about this decision that I have made! I am looking FORWARD to the surgery! Ill post back and let you know how it goes!
