Today was the big day I met DR.Meilahn.First I can say that I did make the right choice in surgens. He was right to the point even though I was nervious and all my shyness came out. Yet he still was calm and very nice to me and my DH. He gave me time to ask questions of him and get information. Nysheeha is the best. She is very kinde and gives each person one on one time. She let me know what my next steps should be and how to get information in to her. Yes I made the right Choice in picking this team to help me with my choice.

Well, I finally had my appointment with Dr. Meilahn. Here is a brief over view of the entire experience.
Temple is a big hospital, I found it a bit intimidating. I arrived early for my appointment but had to wait about 2 hours before being seen by Dr. Meilahn. A very nice medical student came in to get my history prior to meeting the good Doctor.
Dr. Meilahn appears to be a competent physician, he answered my questions and did not seem annoyed by my list.
I want my gastric bypass done lap but I got the feeling he was steering me towards an open. The idea of being gutted just makes me so incredibly frightened. I saw one of his patients who approached me in the waiting area (she was post-op 1 week) she had an open procedure and looked great and was up and walking about. She was very nice and it was great seeing someone in the flesh that had the procedure by the Dr. I am interested in using. Dr. Meilahn told me I should go on a diet, to increase my chances of having the procedure done Lap. ( has anyone else been told that)?
After leaving the appointment with Dr. Meilahn I sat down with his assistant and she gave me a list of follow up things I am going to need in order to go ahead with the surgery. I have no idea who to call for these tests, what type of Doctor does a sleep study? I don't know.
I am afraid, and I want any doctor I deal with to realize that he may do hundreds of surgeries but I only plan on doing this once. I have a family and friends that love me very much I don't want to get lost in a sea of patients (maybe that is too much to ask). I want to be alive and well after my procedure.
In closing, Dr. Meilahn was kind and straight forward, he drew pictures and answered all questions posed to him. I would like any of his post-op patients to contact me. I will be at the next group meeting in Nov.
i changed surgeons. i had surgery with dr. tichansky. He was great. I'm glad I DID.
THE STAFF IS GREAT AND VERY FRIENDLY & HELPFUL.
I immediately liked Dr. Meilahn with his calm, reassuring nature. In our 20-minute initial visit back in January, he was highly cordial and professional, described a number of bariatric procedures to me, and was very patient in answering my many questions. His staff, though very very busy, have been somewhat short, but professional in helping me through the various pre-opt tests. My one complaint has been that I was not provided at my initial visit with a comprehensive list of pre-opt procedures which I needed to complete. Each time I provided a test report, I was given one or two additional test assignments. This became frustrating and slowed down the pre-opt process. These, of course, are just my general impressions and do not reflect those of others.
As I have spoken and learned from others, Dr. Meilahn comes very highly recommended. I have another "pre-admission" visit scheduled for Friday, August 30. I'm very ready to move to the next phase of this long journey.

After two surgeries and a year of post op after care, I have become quite fond of Dr. Meilahn. To have the case load that he does and the intense after care patient load, I have a new found respect and admiration for him. He's such a caring doctor, yet patient and deliberate. I've read and heard of doctor horror stories and complacent care. For anyone considering surgery in the Philadelphia area, you couldn't make a wiser selection that Dr. John Meilahn.
I met with Dr. T about two weeks ago. He was very professional, and took a lot of time with me to go over all the details of surgery as well as answer any and all questions I had from all the research I had done(I had a 3 page list!) He really listened to me and to my concerns, and he put me at ease. I feel very confident in his abilities, and he has a very "human" side to him. I felt he truly cared about my situation, and when he told me he thought I was a good candidate for surgery it validated all the reasons I had wanted to go for the surgery in the first place. I'm scheduled for surgery for a laparoscopic RNY on Nov. 7th... I'm looking forward to the beginning of my "healthier life" :)
I met Dr. Tichansky in July of 2003, he is part of NJ Bariatrics. I felt there was an instant connection and was very happy to have him as my surgeon. I had done a lot of research on this type of surgery, the pros and cons and the nutrition supplementation that would be necessary (both before and after). As we talked, I felt that he was honestly interested in what I had to say and in the background work I had done. He made sure that I was informed ahead of time (as much as I could be)of what could and should happen, to "me". As we discussed the information I had gathered and what I expected to get out of this experience,
I became more and more convinced that this was the person to help me along the next part of my journey! I knew what the surgical practice looked for in a partner and had complete confidence in my doctor's capabilities. Dr. Tichansky has an intense interest in his patient's wellbeing at all stages of their progress and process. He encourages them in their nutrition and in how they can best help themselves both before and after their surgery.
Dr. Tichansky outlines all aspects of the operation and what the patient can expect (as much as possible). He'll tell you what the risks are and makes sure that you understand all of it. He wants his patients to succeed in all aspects of their procedure. This includes pre-testing and aftercare. We've discussed how best to get protein and the importance of hydration, which are two areas that can be difficult in the first few weeks of post-op care. His post-op visits in the hospital are wonderful! After the surgery was finished, and I was in recovery, he took all the time my family needed to detail how everything went. (I remember seeing him in the recovery room and him telling me how well everything had gone!) He visited me each day and quizzed me on how I was feeling and being treated. We talked again about what I could expect and what I should do when I got home. Again, he validated my knowledge and shared how it was such a great key to my quick recovery.
The staff at his office is very friendly. They are (all) truely compassionate and knowledgeable of all phases of this process. Absolutely top notch all the way around!
I would recommend Dr. David Tichansky and NJ Bariatrics to anyone seeking to have gastric bypass surgery. There is a patient education seminar every month for those who are pre-op and those who are just interested in finding out more about the procedure. The doctors attend these sessions along with many post-ops. Indeed, it's run by some long standing weight loss surgery patients. They answer all questions and go over what you can expect every step of the way - the good and the (sometimes) not so good. It becomes a safe place to learn and meet the surgeons.
