My first impression of Dr. Meilahn was that he was all business. No joking around which is what I do in nervous situations. I learned in time that that is exactly what you want when this person was to rearrange your insides...all business! His staff is wonderful..each taking their time to explain things and never making you feel like a failure for allowing yourself to get so obese. I was explained the whole operation process step by step and went to the very informative meeting that Temple held for this surgery. I knew all the do's and don't's, the what to expect and what to look for things. I was compeletly prepared for what was to come. After the surgery the all business Dr. Meilahn turned into the sweetest caring guy who I felt geniunely cared about my well being and my future success. He comes highly recommended in my book!!!
When I first met Dr. Meilahn (back in May 2004) he was cordial and friendly. He answered all my questions thoroughly - even drew pictures for me - and explained all the risks associated with this type of surgery. Through the entire experience he was totally accessible and available whenever I needed anything or had a question. He is obviously concerned for his patients and I felt very reassured by his manner. He's very straight forward and no nonsense when it comes to the surgery, but he also has a dry sense of humor that I enjoy.
His office staff is great. Nyeesha especially is knowlegable and available to answer questions and help with the insurance pre approval process and pre testing.
I would (and I have) recommend Dr. Meilahn to anyone considering this surgery. The pre and post care is great and he strongly emphasized the aftercare and how important it is to use this tool properly. His surgical skill and bedside manner are great. He knows what he's doing, but he's not arrogant about it. Follow his instructions and it will be smooth sailing.
I really think that Dr. Meilahn, is great, because he doesn't pull any punches with you. He is very thourough and straight forward with what the surgery can do, if you do the right things, about what the complications maybe, and the risk of the surgery.
The office staff, exspecially Nyeesha, and Vicky, are wonderful. They treat you like you are the only one that matters, at the time you need their attention. They are great about doing what needs to be done to help you process go as smoothly as possible.
If you are looking for a some on to do your weight loss surgery, I would totally suggest that you at least check out Temple University Hospital, and Dr. Meilahn.

ABOUT DR.M. AND TEMPLE
He is Handsome. From the name,I pictured him Itailian, but he's not. He's very European looking, a real hottie! Very friendly. Most of the Office staff is awesome. He explains all the risks involved, he did a sketch to help explain the procedure. He didn't try to sway me one way or the other, he just gave the facts. No sales pitch, just good info.
I understand he is one of the best.
Very Professional, easy to talk to.
Over time I did become a little overwelmed when it came to the recovery process. He seemed very confident but never gave me false hope and I think I needed that at the time. But I guess it is best not to give patients false reassurance.
His office staff are very kind, very professional caring atomosphere.
He can get a little snippy at times, if you tend to talk over him or assume things.
He is an excellent surgeon, I highly recommend him.
VERY much! He tends to get snippy as I said above if you don't take aftercare seriouly.
So he puts allot of emphasive on follow up.
Yes, all of his team is available 24/7 through a paging system, there is a support group and he scheduled requent follow up visits to monitor progress.
Quite well. I would say two to three of his team memebers explained the process and went over possible risks and complications that can occur.
10! He is an excellent surgeon.
Surgical competence is most important to me, but bedside manner does go a long way. You want to have a good repore with you surgeon, so both are important.
A very skilled surgeon - 1 year and counting and NO complications.
I had my consultation with Dr. Meilahn on 6/2/2004. I had heard a lot of great things about him from a few of the members of a support group I've started attending. I wasn't disappointed at all when my consult date finally arrived. He went over everything in great detail including the drastic changes in my current lifestyle, the commitment I would have to make to help me reach my goal. He wanted to make sure I realized the surgery is just a tool (not a miracle cure for morbid obesity), understood the risks involved, possible side-effects/problems that could occur, and even drew a detailed diagram of what he would be doing in my Roux-en-Y surgery. I experienced the same patience and caring from all of his staff that I dealt with. Although everyone in the office is very busy, no one made me feel like a bother with the questions I posed. Everyone took the time to insure that I felt comfortable and had a thorough understanding to the answers/explainations I was given.
