Brown Surgical Associates Bariatric Center
Dr. Roye and Annette have been great. He takes time to answer all questions, even the ones where I don't like the answers. ha ha--He has explained all risks of this surgery which are increased with my health issues. Follow up care at home is very important with him. Will be having VNA for few weeks and he won't let me stay alone. His secretary Annette has been understanding and that's saying some as she has had to put up with my many phone calls. Once I understood the office policy and step to the procedure things went smooth. I'm sure the 3 of us will have a good working relationship over the next 18 months of post care follow-up. Now I wait 10 more days for the surgery at which time I will update on post care.
He was informative, yet of course, i only realized how much i did not know until after the surgery! He is a great "mechanic" yet is lacking in post op nutrition expertise. The staff was both informative and supportive, and the wait from inital contact to surgey was less than 2 months. He does have a very good follow up progam and works wonders with insurance companies.
He name is Dr Dean Roye, of University Surgical Associates in Providence Rhode Island, he is also an associate professor at Brown University Medical School. He insists on all tests such as a sleep study, a cck hydascan, ( a test of the gall bladder) a ekg, chest x-ray, and a psych eval. He does NOT belive in home scales and stresses the feeling of health being much more important.
He told me in no uncertain terms all the risks of surgery, anesthesia, aftercare, complicatons that can come along later, and stressed that most of these are avoidable. I would rate him an excellent surgeon, and extremely competent. The fact that he practices in a teaching hospital did not make my hospital stay very comfortable, but he was very understanding of my discomfort and did everything possible to make it better for me. my only regret is that I had to have an open rny, and never recieved a satifactory explanation for that...i had previous abdominal surgeries and that was the reason given, yet I have met others who also had extensive ab surgery who were able to have laps,...so this is still an unresolved issue, yet there is nothing i can do about it now....also, i was on clear liquids only for 8 weeks, which was enough to drive me mad...:)
DR.ROYE WAS VARY EASYGOING, HE EXPLAINED EVERYTHING BEFORE I COULD ASK. HE WANTS THE BEST FOR HIS PATIENTS, YET SOME OF HIS STAFF WERE NOT VERY HELPFUL, THEY DIDN'T GIVE ME ANY INFORMATION ON MY INSURANCE LETTER(HOW LONG IT SHOULD TAKE TO GET A RESPONSE, WHEN IT WILL BE SENT OUT, ETC...)ACTUALLY IT WAS JUST THE ONE STAFF MEMBER. OTHER THAN THAT I DON'T SEE HOW ANYONE WOULD BE UNCOMFORTABLE WITH THIS DR.
My first impression of Dr. Roye was extremely good. He is young, knowledgable, and has a wonderful personality. He is very compassionate and will take time to answer any question that you have. He does not put on the appearance of being in a hurry or that he needs to get you out the door to get to his next patient.
I had done much research on this surgery prior to seeing Dr. Roye; however, he still went over what the surgery was about when I saw him. While waiting to go in for my intitial consultation, I had to fill in an extensive survey on my health, what I knew about the surgery, and my reasons for wanting the surgery. They also gave me literature at that time on what to expect for pre-operative testing, what to expect in the hosptital (from the operating room through to discharge), and what the surgery was all about with the associated risks.
Dr. Roye is very adamant prior to surgery that you must follow up with after-care. I had to see him 10 after discharge, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, 18 months and I think 24 months is that last one. Prior to each visit I have to have complete blood work to ensure that I am not malnourished. There is a monthly group that is free to attend and it is for any patient of any physician who has had the surgery. I have not been to this yet as I utilize the Yahoo club - After Weight Loss Surgery group for support.
The only negative about his office was frustration with one of his staff. She would promise things that would be ready or she woudl have an answer on and not deliver on the promise or follow up with a phone call to tell you that she didn't have an answer.
My final thought is that Dr. Roye was an excellent surgeon both in competence and bedside manner and I would recommend him to anyone else with no hesitation.
I got a good impression of Dr. Roye. He seemed knowledgable about the different types of surgery but prefers to do the R-N-Y. He said he would do the lap R-N-Y for me. He has only been doing the surgery for 2 years, but there aren't many who do it here. I feel confident that I can trust him to take care of me. I have faith that my God won't let me go through this alone. I'm ready. He did address the risks of the procedure.
Dr. Dean Roye was very friendly yet thorough in taking a history from me, while being careful to listen to each and everything i had to say about my weight history, which i found very comforting that he wasn't writing down necessarily just what he wanted to hear. He made me feel as though this obesity problem is not enitirely my fault as society( thin society) have made me and countless others feel over the years. finally i have hope that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. His secretarym was very pleasant and helpful. she seemed to know all about the approval procedure, although my insurance company has been giving them problems with approval they were very upbeat about going to bat for me. i would recommend Dr. Roye to anyone. He also gave me "homework" to take home in the form of a lenghthy pamphlet describing from start to finish the procedure, what happens at the hospital, aftercare program, which includes foloow up visits yearly after the first 24 months of intense aftercare. a very comforting thought.
