The Kane Center Bariatric Center
I have not yet met with Dr. Kane. Ginny was very helpful. Will update after I find out if I am approved(first went to BTC-not on my plan-ooops),
I have still not met with Dr. Kane, however, I did find out today 11/1/00 that Starmark approved me. Weight for life now offers lap procedure so I will check and see if Dr. Kane is the one who does that surgery.
11/6/00-Dr. Kane does lap rny. I have appt. with him on 11/13/00. Will let you know what I think. Surgery date of 1/12/01.
11/13/00 Met Dr. Kane Jr. Very nice. Patient and answered all my questions. His staff was very nice and they are all efficient.
My first impression of him was that i really liked, felt safe that he knew what he was talking about.
my impression never changed of him
his office staff is very knowledgeable about the surgery and willing to help you.
dr is very caring and wanting to know everything before you decide to have surgery.
definately wants you to be involved with the aftercare program so it will help you achieve what you wanted to achieve in the beginning.
yes, he has a very structured aftercare program.
he address the risks very throughly
a rate him a very top notch doc who cares.
don't know about his beside manner or the other yet my surgery date is 01-30-01
I first had telephone contact with Ginny
at Weight for Life, which is Dr. Kane's
bariatric program. She is praised throughout
this site, and it's all true, she's great.
I then attended a seminar given by Dr. Kane,
Jr. It was a comprehensive presentation,
as is the Weight for Life program. I'll be
able to share more about this program as
my surgery date arrives.
Dr. Rantis and Dr. Kane assist each other with all Lap proceedures. I met with Dr Rantis for my consult. The staff was great. Ginny at Weight For Life is great, timely which I'm sure is hard to do considering how many calls I'm sure she gets. Dr. Rantis explained everything since I didn't ask many questions (this site gives all the answers) He was very honest in talking about complications I really appreciate that about him. I know this is major surgery and I'd be leary of any surgeon glossing it over. I'm totally comfortable Dr Kane. The testomonies on this site alone give me confidence in him.
Dr Kane wanted to be cautious. He wants to make sure I dont go into this blindfolded. He told me "This can work, but it wont work by itself" I thought he was very kind, and thourough. He definitelly wants me to go to a support group meeting so I can see the effects of surgery, and talk to real people.
I met with Dr Kane Jr., about a week before surgery. When I met Dr Kane, I knew right away that I had a good doctor. He answered all my questions and added other details that I did not want to consider like risk. Dr Kane was there just before surgery to hold my hand and visited every day at the hospital. My first post op office visit was 6 days after surgery and Dr Kane was still intent on answering my questions and did not rush me eventhough the appointment went pass 9:00pm. I would highly recommend him.
Q: What was your first impression of him/her?
A: I met with Dr. Kane Jr. at about 8:30PM. When we met he asked me what I knew about the procedure and I told him I had researched it thoroughly and knew everything about it. He went over some of the risks and benefits and then he told me about a seminar that I "needed" to attend in January that he does which goes over different aspects of the surgery and that was that.

Basically all I got out of our first meeting was "come to the seminar". Well, I hate seminars and I hate crowds I would prefer not to go. I didn't really get to talk to him, and I'm not particular about people's personality, but he seemed a bit blase about everything. I wasn't able to judge him in the 5 minutes we talked.

Q: How did your impression change over time?
A: We'll see.

Q: How would you describe his/her office staff?
A: Seemed nice to me.

Q: What did you like least about him/her?
A: Pushing the "seminiar" rather than discussing things personally.

Q: What should future patients know about him/her?
A: Make sure the appointment will be productive.

Q: How much does he/she emphasize aftercare?
A: Seems to be comprehensive according to the brochure.

Q: Does he/she have a structured aftercare program?
A: According to the brochure.

Q: How did he/she address the risks of surgery?
A: Matter-of-factly.

Q: How would you rate him/her overall?
A: Too soon to rate.

Q: Which is better, surgical competence, bedside manner, or both great?
A: When it comes to cutting up my internal organs, I would prefer a cold, calculating robot who performs perfectly as opposed to a person with good bedside manner. Save the bedside manner for the nurses. If the doc is good and a great guy, that's a bonus.

My first impression of Dr. Kane was wonderful. But it was about 4 years before I was considering WLS. He took out my gallbladder in 96! He did a great job- no complications, very small scars. Since then he also repaired my mother's hernia (MAJOR operation) and my dad's thyroid. So needless to say, I totally trust him! I went to the Weight for Life seminar and Dr. Kane explained everything. Read the insurance section to see how the program helped me get approved.
My first impression: a plesant surprise, a very good one
Dr. Kane Sr. is older, and is as sharp as a tack.
He is a very kind, very knowledgeable, surgeon, he talks a lot
and he listens. He cares.
He has a practice with his son, Dr. Kane Jr. and 2 other surgeons.
Over time my opinion of Dr. Kane has changed,
and for the better. I appreciate the fact
that I had my surgery performed by
probably the best surgeon in the Chicago area.
He has been performing this kind of surgery
for decades. His office staff is always kind, and very helpful.
There is great emphasis on after care, follow up appointments,
obesity support group meetings 2 times a month.
He went over everything, explained the surgery, risks, etc. in great detail.
Overall, I would have to give him a 10 on a scale of 1-10.
I was pleased with both surgical competence bedside manner
