Texas Bariatric Specialists Bariatric Center
I have no comment about Dr. Patel because I never spoke to, met, or corresponded with him. My complaint is about the office staff, they are very unprofessional, unmotivated, and incompetent. To start in the 5 months I worked with the "staff" at TX Bariatric Specialists I called at least 10 different times and was flat hung up on! No call back, I would have to call back and be on hold for how ever long. The surgical assistant James was very rude and condescending, I was supposed to have a nutrition appointment with a dietician well she was on vacation (why would you schedule an appt when the person is on vacation). James proceeded to throw a handful of papers at me and said "just know you won't be eating a lot anymore", that was the extent of my "nutrition" appt. So that day I fired that whole group, I'm sure the doctor is fine but there was NO way I was letting anyone there touch me surgically. I have since been with BMI of Texas and they have been wonderful, so professional, supportive, and real with me! My surgery went very well and I am seeing lots of success thanks to the group there.
Words cannot describe how I look or feel. You would have to see me before (weighed 264) and now (weighing 163). Dr. Patel was concerned about my health and very patient with me in asking several questions or repeating himself when I didn't understand. The staff was great. The hospital I went to was great and so were the nurses. It is tough let no one fool you. But the results are fantastic. It is a long road some days are better than others. But I love my size of 14 and found I can buy normal clothes that cost less than the special stores and more monies for 4X. I feel great look great and am very pleased. Yes they sell their products but you also have an option buy else where. Do IT!! You will love and be proud of yourself and others will tell how good you look!
Go somewhere else! All his office cares about is the money. The office is a rented bi-weekly space they use to get the cattle through, the office attendants very useless, and they just want to push their products to you and transfer over to more useless people. I am yet to even meet the Dr. Patel and been a week out of surgery. Took the psychological evaluation twice because the first time it didn't show I was ready for the surgery so was told to take it again, both times paying a co payment, but the second time make sure to "understand the question before answering..." basically telling me put what the insurance company wants to see. After that was told I was good to go, pay the co payment for surgery, and set a date. Set the date went to the hospital got the surgery in a run down hospital, the Nurses where the only GREAT thing they were very helpful and attentive.Called for my one week post surgery follow up and the only next appointment appointment after post op will be 6 WEEKS OUT! Very disappointment in myself for even letting myself choose this doctor office for my surgery, the writing was on the wall and was blinded by my means to the end and now I'm stuck with a doctors office who cares little if not at all. Oh, and get ready to wait a minimum of 90 minutes from the time you arrive for your "Appointment" to been seen for 5 min.

My first impression of Dr. Patel was that he cared about my situation and said he would do what he can to help me get my surgery. As time went by dealing with the staff was nice they were good about getting back to me on any questions I had. Then after I was sent for testing
I was under the impression that I would get an answer about being eligible for surgery only to find out I needed more testing which would cost me more time and money. Even though the surgery was not scheduled I had to pay for a psychology evaluation and a nutritionist consult and on top of that another test to spend more money on. At this point I felt like a walking money sign ! I just don't feel this establishment is up front you are just a number to them . Long story short they lost my business and now I'm going elsewhere .

Awesome surgeon with an even more amazing staff. I was blessed to walk into his San Antonio branch. I was actually referred by accident to his office. One of my customers wrote his contact info on one of Dr. Patel's business cards. First person I talked to was James, a very important member of his staff. Talk about motivation, the guy know his stuff and is willing to help you out in any way he san to make sure you make the right decision. When I finally met Dr. Patel, he was very upfront and told me exactly what would have to happen in order to get my surgery done. We tried for a whole year until finally an opportunity arose. I still remember Bobby calling to tell me we had a way to go. Then Jason took over as my patient advocate and the ball rolled and move quickly. Got my surgery approved and done all with in about 15 days. I definitely recommend Dr. Patel and his staff, not only to people that have decided on WLS, but who are in the market to change their lives once and for all.
Wow I am confused after reading the reviews here. I traveled a long way to see him, nutritionist etc and I only got to do the seminar and then see him and he was reading items on his phone while I had serious questions. I never got to see anyone else as they told me when I set up the apt. The front staff OMG No instructions, when questions were asked they did not know any more than I. You would think someone in charge of selling items would be familure with them and would be familure with items from doctor. I have to say she could not comprehend I was not from the area. I have to say it was scary. This is my health my body, I want to know what to do and how to do it and what is going into my body. Not sure I will go back. This is just my experience in July of 13

I Highly recommend Nilesh Patel. He has several clinics in towns around San Antonio Texas. He does all his surgeries in San Antonio. He did my daughters RNY a week before mine. My daughter and I had our pre assessments in Corpus Christi, Texas. He was very thorough. HE had high standards that we needed to follow before the surgery. That is good because my first surgery (lap band) failed. So I appreciated that about him. He wanted to make sure that this surgery would be successful. And it was.
We continue to have our after care with him in Corpus Christi.
His staff is wonderful and helpful.

I first contacted Dr. Patel in 2009 concerning weight loss surgery. He was very matter-of-fact and told me flat out that he would not recommend any surgery but the Roux-en-Y. I never questioned his recommendation. I wrangled with my insurance company for 3 years until I switched companies and got approval within a couple of months. It has been my experience that I have not had any problems contacting the staff - and I have always gotten a return call within hours. The ENTIRE staff travels between San Antonio, TX to Corpus Christi, TX (180 miles) several times a month. They also travel to 5 or 6 other cities nearby San Antonio. I traveled to San Antonio to have my surgery and even though Dr. Patel was held up by another surgery, he arrived several hours late, said hello then rushed off to handle his patients. I was the last surgery he performed that day (it was nearly 10:30 PM when I came out of recovery to the room) but he did a bang up job - no complications! In spite of how busy this man is, he has always been accommodating and takes time to stop and talk to his patients, even if they are only in the office for a weigh-in. I am pleased (more than pleased) with Dr. Patel as my surgeon and would recommend him to anyone considering weight loss surgery. His assistant handled all the bedside care after surgery while in the hospital. He was delightful and concerned. I enjoyed the hospital staff - especially my CNA who had just been promoted from housekeeping. She was SPECIAL - and provided top notch care while I was in the hospital.
The staff has always been helpful and courteous - despite having spent 3 hours on the road to get to the office plus 3 hours going home. They are knowledgeable when it comes to surgery and bariatric products such as protein shakes and vitamins. The post-op classes are designed to provide the patient with the proper information needed to start the eating phases required for WLS.
Lastly, which is better - surgical competence or bedside manner? I believe they are both important, and I would say Dr. Patel has them both!
I had surgery on October 3, 2012. I checked into the hospital extremely nervous! I was so scared, I mean its major surgery. Once I was brought to the back, the nurses made me feel so welcome and at ease. I felt safe immediately. Up stairs in pre-op I was treated so well I was given warm blankets and smiles, I was so at ease I fell asleep while waiting. I have no memory of the events to come, I woke up with my family staring down at me. I was on great pain meds and the nursing staff was excellent! Overall it was a great experience.
