T. Paul Singh, M.D. Bariatrics Bariatric Center
The first time I went to Dr. Singh's office, I spent one hour with a resident and a half hour with Dr. Singh. They were both very pleasant and answered all my questions. The office staff gave my a pamphlet of information to read in preparation for the surgery which was very helpful. Before surgery is scheduled, Dr. Singh requires approvals from several different doctors. At first, I thought this was a hassle because it delayed my goal but then I realized that the more information he has, the better my outcome will be.
i think hes a very kind caring dr.iam very impressed with him,and hope to just get this done so i can be a decente mom and wife[you now how hard it is everyone thats ever had a weight problem,i am no fun cant even put my own socks on lrt alone be fun with playing puff puff]
my first impression of dr singh was a good one.his staff the nurses seemed extremly nice.the only thing that bothers me is i have to lose 35 lbs. i understand why,but its hard i lose 10 then gain 5 then i lost 20 lbs but gained 13 back.ihave been excepted will do surgury after get all clearances, waiting on sleap study they say i have sleep apnea.go for c-pap on 17 should have all clearnces by the end of march 03.then make appt. with dr.singh,he said hell give me my date about 6 weeks from when he sees me. he saw the first time with in the same week i called.hes very straight forward an dont sugar coat anything.he seems great so far.my e-mail is [email protected]
Dr Singh's waiting room was overwhelming in scope when I first got there. The receptionist was super and this impression of the staff continued as I met the nurse who weighed me, the assistant who first interviewed me and lastly Dr. Singh. Dr. Singh did not give the impression that he is an extremely busy man since he took a lot of time with me and never rushed me or my thoughts and questions. One of the big questions I had was my age since I just turned 60 but he did not feel that was a problem. He went over all the various types of proceedures, not just the ones that he does and indicated where the others were done. We discussed my reasons for wanting the surgery, the possible results and the after care needed. He reviewed the support groups available and necessary, the nutritionist and the necessary appointments,
and gave me the list of other surgical consultations necessary and the amount of weight necessary to lose before scheduling the operation. Overall, I was very pleased with the consultation.
Choosing Dr. Singh was an easy decision for me. My PCP works with a partner, and his partner's brother had WLS with Dr. Singh. I knew I'd be in good hands if a doctor would trust his own brother to Dr. Singh!
I found Dr. Singh to be very easygoing and pleasant to talk to, nice looking and younger than I'd thought he'd be. I didn't have many questions about the actual procedure, because I've been researching this for a while.
The 10% weight loss recommendation before scheduling surgery came as a shock to me. (Guess I didn't do quite enough research!!) My PCP's office called in late June to get my appt. with Dr. Singh, which was scheduled for Sept. 10th. I was disappointed in the long wait, but not surprised. After finding out in Sept. about the 10%, (which was 35lbs. for me), I was angry at my PCP's office, for not informing me of this. I had all summer off, which I spend gardening like a fiend, and have a pool to swim in. I know I could have lost that 10% while I waited to see Dr. Singh. Of course I rebelled by eating everything and anything I wanted during the 2 months before my 2nd consult...passed all my pre-op clearances and got a letter asking for a waiver of the 10% weight loss due to many prior failed attempts at weight loss from my PCP.
I was nervous going to my 2nd consult, knowing that I had gained weight - 13 lbs. The nurse weighing me was quite unpleasant about it, although I thought she really had no business criticising anyone with a weight problem, if you know what I mean...(I checked my "bad attitude" with my partner, who also agreed she was rude about it!)
Dr. Singh was very upfront about the reasons for the 10% weight loss, and said that he would go ahead if I wanted him to, but could not assure my long term success without the proper mental and behavioral changes in place for me prior to surgery. Then and there I decided to schedule surgery for 6 wks. from that time, and to work on losing whatever I could before surgery. I stayed for the support group meeting that night and found everyone there to be very helpful and compassionate. I have been working on the 10% ever since, and know I have lost weight, although I don't know how much. I can now button shirts down at the hip that wouldn't button before. More important than that is that I feel much healthier already, just by eating mostly protein, low carbs. I can't imagine how I'll feel after WLS!
I wish that either my PCP or Dr. Singh's office would let patients know about the 10% when their appts. are scheduled so they could deal with that recommendation before seeing the doctor.
I found most of Dr. Singh's staff to be very pleasant and helpful, especially Debbie. She handles all the insurance issues, and I had no problem getting approved on the first try.
Surgery's only 10 days from today!!!
Dr Singh was open and honest! He first discussed the surgerys he preforms. He also went over the complications & Benefits! I was a bit nervous, he sensed that & made me more comfortable!! I came well prepared with a notebook full of questions & MY BEST FRIEND DANA, who is looking into the surgey herself! He took his time & answered all of my questions. I like his approach, which is different than most surgeons. He wants you to loose 10% of your weight, 25# for me & 2 support group meetings. He wants you to realize you need to change your eating habbits BEFORE surgery so that your prepared AFTER surgery. YOU CAN NOT eat anything you want after!!!! I did not need a pschy eval...Yeeaaaaaaaaaa!!!I even asked how many lap rny's he has done & how many people have died. He was very nice, overall I would rate him a 10!!
Dr. Singh was very nice and very laid back. I didn't need a whole lot of time with him because I did my research. I felt very comfortable with him, even more than the guy who took my gall bladder out in 2000. I had heard that Singh screens his paitents VERY carefully. I don't see how he does that. If he means that we have to do all kinds of things to get the surgery date, like lose 10% of our body weight, go to two support meetings, etc etc etc, it's not a big deal. I can meet everything he asks of me. For him, after care is seeing him for a time after the surgery and then I will see my local Dr from then on (I live 100 miles from Albany). He gave me a HUGE packet about all of the info you could possibly want on the surgery, such as, risks, procedures, diet, etc. I am looking forward to going ahead and losing the weight, I have all ready lost 6 pounds and I have 24 left to go as of 9/11/02. I am looking forward to working with Dr. Singh in the future! I hope to have my surgery by late winter/early spring.
I met with my surgeon and I got all the questions I had answered and was given some literature on the different surgeries. Dr. Singh was very patient and helpful. I was fully prepared for all his requirments, which are losing 10% of your body weight, seeing a nutritionist, and having a psych. eval. Most surgeons skip a lot of these steps, but they are for your benefit. This is a huge decision to make and it shouldn't be taken lightly. Singh was highly recommended to me by other people that had the surgery by him or were getting it.
