Synergy Bariatrics Bariatric Center
My first impression of synergy was a cozy atmosphere. The staff were initially great and I felt that I would be in good hand. Then the check list came. So I did every thing that was required of me. I suspect this office felt as though none of their patients had a career and a family. Every program that they had is schedule at 5pm, so if you were at the office late, tough luck cookie, you have to wait another month for them to reschedule you. I was determined to go through with the process so I endured it. The next group session I busted through traffic to make it on time, I was 6 minutes late and the lady who makes the shakes (never met her before) said "your late you know, we always start on time". Yes I know that I'm late, but spare me te childish attitude.
So after finishing a 1 hour session on what to eat after surgery I quickly handed in my paper work and thought whew, that's my last on the check list. Oh, I have never been so wrong. After going to the doctor for the psych eval (which I think is a bunch of bull to begin with, but I play by the rules) I guess it that didn't sit well with whoever there). That wasnt my problem with the whole process. My problem started with the question that I still have, when were you going to tell me? I was told that after the checklist is complete, we will send your info to the insurance company then call you with the next avail appt which takes approx 3-4 weeks. So I waited a month and a half. No call. So I called back. Yup, found out because I told the psych doc I drink 3 glasses of wine per week with my husband at dinner I'm suddenly a risk as a alcoholic. Wow! Never saw that one coming. Ha! Very laughable. But really? When were you going to call and tell me?
The problem with the place is everyone has a different role. So many hands in the pot that no one knows what to do. So I call one person and leave a voicemail to ask them a question. They call me back and say, nope I can't answer that one, you have to call the next. Then you call another and leave a voice mail and they call you back 2 days later and leave a voicemail because you are at work. Good luck reaching a human before noon. It's a constant game of phone tag. Does anyone sit at a desk there?
I thought that I lucked out finding someone with great reviews. But boy was I wrong. I told them that I don't want to do my surgery with them and they reacted as though they didn't care. No "what went wrong", no, "I'm sorry you feel that way", no, "how can we do better". Just "ok, bye". Guess I'm back at square one. Wish I found this out in November. Now it's June and yes I'm pissed I wasted my time and hundreds of dollars on this place.

Synergy Bariatric's is a wonderful office to work with. While I was overly prepared for the process, the stars weren't aligned and I found out I was severely hypothyroid. A year following my original approval, they helped me push through and get approval again and it all fell in place quickly.
Don't let anyone tell you it's easy surgery. The first 48 hours following surgery are not pleasant (just like most surgeries) and it takes your own dedication and commitment to get better but the Staff and nurses are there for you the entire way. Dr. Cavaretta's a great surgeon. You won't see much of him but his staff certainly fills in all the gaps. I've lost almost 100 pounds and gone from a 48 waist down to almost a 30. Still considered overweight at 175 pounds on a 5'8" body but I would do it all again in a heartbeat. I had three sets of cardiac stents in a year and a half prior to the surgery and couldn't keep the cholesterol under control. Pills are down to a small hand full a day rather than a large hand full and a half. I have more energy and other than developing a hernia, I'm doing well.
I highly recommend this surgery, Synergy Bariatrics and Dr.
Cavaretta to anyone who has the commitment to lose weight and get healthy. Don't go into it thinking the surgery alone will fix everything. Be prepared to work at it yourself. The surgery is just one more tool in your toolbox to work with in the effort to get healthy.

Dr. Caruana is wonderful. I was so scared and nervous (again) before surgery, and I remember him touching my hand letting me know everything was going to be okay. He is such a wonderful doctor, and he truly cares about each and every one of his patients. I highly recommend him yet again!
I was very happy with Dr. Caruana. He truly cares about what he does. I felt from day 1 that he truly cared about my success. The day of surgery I was nervous, and he was very calm and easy to talk to. I give him two thumbs up.
I had the lap-band in June, I would give Dr Wohahbi 10 stars if they would let me. He is very caring and was always available through his nurse and even after hours if needed. If I had a problem it was addressed right away. I would highly recommend him to anyone considering weight loss surgery.
Love love love dr carana and all his staff , They know the process and get you along the right path .Great office - doctor to call upon for help . They have the answers!
My first impression of Dr.Caruana was excellent, at my first appointment he was open to listening and answered all my questions. The office staff was also very kind and patient with paperwork process. Even the morning of my surgery Dr.C took some time because I was nervous and helped me to relax. After surgery in the hospital my family said he was also nice to talk to talk to. When he had come in to check on me post op his bedside manner was excellant. I would recommend Dr.C and staff to anyone considering this surgery.
Dr. Caruana and his staff are wonderful.... I have called on several occasions to ask questions and the staff has been very understanding and helpful. I was so glad that he makes you go a class before ... the nurse really reviewed everything from getting to the hospital to the time that you leave ... she left no questions unanswered and no details out. They really made me feel comfortable. Everyone was very positive.
Dr. Caruana upon first impression was kind, friendly, attentive, and very knowledgeable. Over time, my impression of him has remained the same, and I feel I was in very good hands during surgery. I have yet to meet with him for my initial post-op visit, so I cannot comment on that yet. I guess the onlt thing that I could complain about is the wait time to get an appointment, and the lengthy process. Synergy will not even allow you to meet with Dr.C for a consult until you have a letter of referral for insurance by your PCP and psychiatry consult, as well as any additional specialists you may see regularly, such as a cardiologist. Also, Synergy will not schedule your surgery until your insurance has paid for your first appointment at their office- even if they'ce already approved the surgery. It took an additional 2 1/2 weeks for Synergy to receive the payment from BCBS so that delayed getting a surgery date. The staff at Synergy Bariatrics is professional, compassionate, and very knowledgeable. You can tell upon first appointment that everyone there really cares, and loves what they are doing. Aftercare is very structured, and expected. There are follow up appointments at 10 days, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, 1 year, and annually after that. They do labs at a every visit. They have a full equipped fitness club in their office, complete with professional trainers and classes, which a 3 month free membership is included in your post-op aftercare. Dr. Caruana was very thorough at addressing the risks of surgery, as well as his own track record of complications and how they were resolved. He spent a great deal of time with me at consult answering a ton of questions, and really getting to know me personally. he was very thorough on physical exam as well. Overall, I would rate Dr.C a 9 out of 10, being that I believe there is always room for improvement, but he comes pretty close to a 10. He has done over 4000 open rny to date, and his track record is excellent. He is rated in the top 5% in the country. I believe his surical competence is excellent, he is able to complete his procedures in just 45 minutes, with a very minimal long line incision, mine is only 3 inches long. His bedside is equally good, being very caring, attentive, and addressing any issues or concerns right away. The only complaint I would have about the office itself is that their phone and answering system could use some improvement. Because their office is so busy, unless you have an emergency, there really is no way to speak directly to a human, you will get a voicemail to leave a message at all other options/extensions, and then in most cases you get a call back in 24 hours, that is even for scheduling/rescheduling appointments, as I had that experience this week.
