Stephen V. Hamn, MD Bariatric Center
Dr. Hamn seems to be very direct and to the point. He is pro banding more than the bypass. He is a very good listener, he doesn't rush you like most other Dr.'s do. He is what I would call a no bull Dr., that is to say that he doesn't try to scare you with the potential problems of surgery, but he explains all that could go wrong and lets you decide on having the surgery or not. One thing I would like to see him take up is a structured after-care program. Dr. Hamn has a wonderful office staff, any of the women will do all thay can to help you.
Dr.Hamn is a nice no frills doctor. He explains the surgery's and explains the procedure
of his choice, his concern is for the good of his patients. He says that this is not the
only thing to do to loose the weight, but you haave to make life time changes and stick to
them. When cheeting the only person that looses is yourself. Surgery and the importance
of control after is stressed. You say yes or no and the ball rolls. Information
required to get insurance to pay for the procedure. The office staff are great, they
fight tooth and nail for you, they have my blessings. The follow up help he has is limited to
dietitian. You have to be a resourceful person with this detail but he is a great doctor.
There are numberous places that are out there to help with support all you have to do
is search, I found several places in just a few minutes. I am very pleased with him and his staff.
As for surical competence and bedside manner I can only say I was reccomended to him with high praise
and his bedside manner has yet to be seen. But again as I said I am very pleased wiht Dr.Hamn so far
and feel very comfortable.
I really like Dr. Hamn. He shoots straight from the hip. He is very personable and easy to talk to. I really like the fact that he has about 600 surgeries under his belt. They said that a patient of Dr. Hamn has created a WLS support group. Their aftercare program is with a nutrionist. Everyone was very friendly.
My 1st impression of Dr. Hamn was that he is very straight forward and to the point. He does not sugar coat things and basically stated the facts of the procedure and the risks. His office seems very knowledgeable but I guess with the media attention of the surgeries his office is very busy so paperwork was not sent in very quickly. It took them over 3 weeks just to submit the 1st letter to the insurance co. But, I was scheduled for surgery much quicker than I thought. When I went for the consult on 5/26 they were booking surgeries for August so I guessed I would have October or later--what a shock to be scheduled for 7/30!!
I had my fist visit on May 16th and I thought Dr. Hamn was wonderful. He explained everything about the surgery in great detail. He was confident on getting surgery approved with insurance company. He advised that the only time he really has any problems with the insurance companies is when they have written exclusions. I am now waiting for approval.
Dr. Hamn is a great surgeon. His office staff is wonderful. The only thing I wish is that he had some kind of aftercare program. But I will seek my support elsewhere, it is worth it to have someone as skilled and knowlegeable as Dr. Hamn. I have a lot of support through this site and my yahoo groups site. I went for my last appointment with Dr. Hamn on 2/22 and he gave me a lot of great information. And told me to feel free to call or stop by with any questions. Or just to show him how my progress is going. I would use Dr. Hamn again in a heartbeat.
Dr. Hamn was very polite and seemed to know his business. I really enjoyed my visit and hope that he and I will become partners.
The office staff was very nice and knowlegeable. My only concern is that lack of support groups avaiable or organized through Dr. Hamn's office. However, overall, I would rate Dr. Hamn and his staff a 8.9 with 10 being the best.
