Dr. Randall was very nice. He answered all of my questions even before I asked them. He was very honest about the surgery, the possible complications and his reasons for preferring the open to the lap procedure. I told him I was just in the consideration stage and he was very supportive and encouraging. I liked him a lot. He came highly recommended and I also met people in his waiting room that had drive up to 3 hours just to see him. One woman was a nurse that has been caring for bypass patients post-op, had just driven 3 hours to see Dr. Randall...that left an impression. Another had driven 1.5 hours and another 2 hours.
In addition, he requires you attend his monthly support group before and after the surgery.
What I liked least was simply that I waited more than an hour for my appointment, but this also gave me time to meet others in the waiting room. I'm not sure if there is anything I won't like but will update as I go along. I have given this a lot of thought and I am going forward with the surgery.

Hi Everyone: My journey through Gastric Bypass started three years ago when I went to my Primary Care Physician (PCP) and he suggested that I have the surgery. I work at Mass General Hospital in Boston, also where I had my surgery. I told my PCP that I wanted to wait a year and see if I could lose this weight that I have been carrying along with me for over 20 years on my own. I finally made the decision after numerous appointments with a few friends, family members and most important, therapy. I first wanted to go and see Janey Pratt at MGH. You see, I needed my fix and I needed it "NOW". Dr. P didn't have an opening for a while, but Dr. H. did. I met with Dr. H. Since I had surgery when I was a day old, and Dr. H mostly experienced with lap procedures, he wanted me to meet with Dr. Randall of MGH. What a joy. Dr. Randall gets right to the point. I met with Dr. Randall first in January of 04. My best friend was getting married and I wanted desperately to be thin for her wedding (in May). Dr. Randall told me to have a good time and I should wait to have the surgery afterwards. Needless to say that today, I am two weeks post-op, doing great. My G-tube came out yesterday. Tomorrow is my 33rd birthday and what a gift I gave myself.
I did not see Dr. Randall while I was in the hospital. My surgery was done on Friday, June 4, 2004 and he had the weekend off. Needless to say, I saw a senior resident of the surgical team at MGH. He was very caring, we laughed and he told me the answers to my questions. I did stay one extra day in the hospital (surgery Friday I left on Tuesday) because I wanted to make sure that I saw every member of my team. Bedside manner for me is key.
Right now, I am on soft protein foods only. I love having my Flinstones in the morning and my calcium chews in the afternoon. Those are the only sweet things that I can have for right now.
How do you tell a food addict who ate 24/7 that I am only going to be able to eat so little? Trial and error. In the days that I have been able to eat, I only dumped once, because I was very thirsty (I hate water, but am learning to love it now) and I drank quickly after I ate.
Would I have this surgery again. (In a heart beat). Thank you god I don't have to!
Please email me and I will be more than willing to share my experience, strength and hope as much as I can.

I was quite impressed with Dr. Randall. I first saw him at an informational meeting. I was impressed with his quiet self confidence. This obviously came from years of experience. Meeting him in his office put me right at ease. He is thorough and kind. Very professional and not full of himself. Answered every question more fully than I even expected and I am an RN.
Office staff is friendly although several scheduling mistakes have occured.
Aftercare is a big part of the MGH Weight Center. There is a very highly structured aftercare follow-up program. Impressive.
The risks of surgery were made quite clear to me.
I will not rate the program overall until after surgery and I see, first hand, the follow through.
June 16th, 2004
I am now nearly three weeks postop. So far the follow up has been good. I saw Dr. Randall at one week post-op and have a nutrition appt next week.

Dr. Randall is a sweet and gentle guy. If you need to get in touch with him he is s phone call away. During my hospital stay I threw-up all over him but he didn't seem to mind - what a nice guy.

I met this doctor after a coworker reccomended him and after reading profiles on this website. Dr. Randall has to be the kindest, funniest surgeon I have met. He was very upfront on what he did and why. Just by his demenour and sincere concern about me made me want this surgeon. It also helped he has such extensive experience.

I first heard of Dr. Randall from a patient of his. She highly reccomended him. I made an appointment for a consult. Yes it did take quite a few months for that appointment. Defintely worth the wait. I had my consult. Dr.Randall asked me many questions about my weight, and what had I done for weight loss programs. He told me if I was serious that I would need to meet with the nutrionist and psychologist. He then went into detail why he only does the roux en y open bypass,he also went into the risks explaining them all to me. As Dr.Randall was explaining the possiblity of galls stones. My dad interupted.( My dad came with me for the consult.) I have a younger sister who was having gallbladder problems at the time. Her doctors weren't to forthcoming with that diagnosis. Dr.Randall shifted gears and started asking my dad questions about my sister and her symptoms. Most doctors I know would have completely brushed my dad off. Why should Dr.Randall have cared, my sister wasn't his patient. I was completely floored. I left his office knowing that this was the doctor for me.
My surgery date came in late Dec of 2003 for Jan 6,2004. I had my pre-op appointment with Dr.Randall. I was received with a big smile and hug,and asked how was I doing. We went over the surgery papers and what I could expect. Was told not to worry and see ya next week.
Had sugery JAn 6,2004. My opinion of Dr.Randall only got better as I was in the hospital. The second night I developed a fever, which had the nurses calling Dr.Randall in the wee hours of the morning. Also Dr.Randall saw me on a Thursday night. Told me I was doing well and that he wouldn't be in on Friday. As he had a day of surgeries at another Boston hospital. To my great shock Dr. Randall showed up Friday night at 10pm. Thats what I call a DEDICATED DOCTOR. I also wonder when does he get to go home.
Dr.Randall also has a great monthly support meeting. Which he runs in conjuction with the nutrionist. These meetings are great, everyone is so nice.
I would highly recomend Dr.Randall. He is the best doctor I have ever had. I've never come across a doctor like him. I could go on and on singing his praises. Now all I need to do is find a primary care physican just like him.

I met Dr. Randall in July a couple weeks before my mother was to have her surgery. And I must say I saw in him a sincerity and devotion to getting his work done and getting it done right. Typically I am very skeptical of doctors, but in him I saw a very devoted man as well as a physician. I knew then that I could trust both the life of my mother and myself in his hands. Even throughout the days in recovery I watched as he took concern and care over my mother. But for myself it has been when I feared most that no doctor would help me with my weight because of my age. As I asked Dr. Randall for his help I was given an answer that both filled me with joy, but also made me realize that this was a man willing to help the needy, restoring lives to the forsaken. I believe god has put us each on this earth to in some way help the world of man, Dr. Randall has found his calling.

Dr Randall has been supportive and informative throughout the whole procedure.
At first I was a little intimated by him but as time went on I realized that he was being very realistic about the upcomming surgery and the risks involved and how we could minimize them by taking certain steps before the surgery.
His staff both in his office and the nutrition staff are pleasant, supportive and responsive to all your needs and questions.
He has established a wonderful before and aftercare program that meets on a monthly basis. Each month he selects a different topic to be discussed and he usually has a guest speaker as well as questions and comments on progress from the attendees.
Aftercare is stresws3ed by both Dr Randall and his staff. One of his first comments to me was that he was making a lifetime commitment to me could I do the same, as surgery was only the first step on the lifetime journey we would be taking.
Overall he has been informative, supportive and extremely competant.
The surgery went without a single complecation and he and the hospital staff could not have been more helpful during that time.
