My surgeon was amazing, felt very comfortable with him, and he was recommended by many of my friends that had prior surgeries. I am so glad that I took their advice.

My surgery went really well, and all through the process I felt like Dr. McKeen and his staff really cared about how I did.

Then- things got complicated. I ended up getting pneumonia right after surgery, and a stricture a few weeks after I recovered from the pneumonia (NONE OF THIS was Dr. McKeen's fault at all, sometimes, these things just happen). Kelly, the nurse in Dr. McKeen's office was calling me at 9:30pm to make sure I was doing okay, and jumping through hoops to get me into see a specialist quickly. Dr. McKeen made sure to check on me in the hospital when I was admitted for pneumonia- even though it really didn't have anything to do with my surgery, he just wanted to make sure I was doing well.

I really can't recommend Dr. McKeen and South Bay Bariatrics enough. My only regret in this entire process was not doing it sooner.

Dr McKeen is a great person to have in your corner when your working on your weight lose. He is very proactive and I see him on a monthly (every 3 week basis). Thanks to him and his staff I wouldn't have lost as much as I have if they were not there to point out issues with food quantity and restriction. rnThank you to all of them

Dr. Mc Keen is an extremely handsome man that's why I chose him. LOL His online picture does nothing for him, must see in person.rnrnDr. McKeen is thorough and completely takes his time to inform you of the benefits and risks involved with this type of surgery. One's initial consult with Dr. Mc Keen is well over one hour. He takes the time to answer all questions and listens intently to all one's concerns. rnrnHis office staff is extremely professional and down to Earth, no pretentions.rnrnHe does encourage his patients to attend regular support group meetings at the hospital.rnrnHe visited with me daily sometimes twice during my three day hospital stay.rnrnHis concern was primarily related to whether the hospital nursing staff were treating me well, which they were. This hospital appears to be new in working with baritric patients. As I was discharged they sent a child's wheelchair to pick me up! Needless to say I stuffed my big self in their and requested a much larger one. rnrnHe rates high in my book.rn

My first impression of Dr. McKeen was a good one. He was very patient, nice and answered all of my questions. I didn't meet him in person until I was about to go into surgery. We did an over the phone consultation, but never an actual person to person visit due to me being 4 hours away from his practice. I thought the day of surgery he would spend a little more time with me than he did. He came into my little cubical where I was waiting at the surgical center, and showed me an actual band and then how you fill it up. I asked him a couple questions and that was it. He talked to me for like 3 minutes. It was very rushed, and I couldn't help but feel like a cow being herded. (no pun intended....lol) It was kind of weird. It was the same way with his assistant, a very rushed feeling everytime I talk to her. They were both very nice, just rushed feeling. After that, I didn't see either of them, not even after surgery. I don't know if they were even there for surgery! LOL I thought maybe a phone call that night or the next day to check on me.....but nothing. Hell, my dentist calls and checks on me after a rough treatment. Now, I know I am not the only patient so I understand how very busy they must be. Overall, I did like Dr. McKeen and Chris, his assistant. I mainly chose them because they were cheaper than other surgeons. I would recommend him to another person for surgery, unless they were expecting more attention and/or better bedside manner. All that being said, I do have 24 access (if emergency) to both Dr. McKeen and Chris via phone calls. Chris has returned all of my phone calls post op, about 3 in 1 weeks time. They even give out their home #'s. I feel too guilty calling them at home, I hope I never need anything that emergent to need to call them at home!! Good review, just a few minor gripes. ADD ON SIDE NOTE 3/24: I was a bit pre-menstural when I wrote this review, and hungry!!! LOL I just wanted to add that I really do think that Chris and Dr. McKeen are awesome! Chris has called to check on me several times since surgery. I was very surprised and appreciated it very much. She is the bomb!!

Wow, I just celebrated my 3rd bandiversary. Dr. McKeen did my initial surgery on 12/29/03. I saw him two weeks prior, was so impressed, scheduled all the tests with my primary care doctor and just went for it. He is so approachable, honest, accepting and a wonderful listener. You can tell that he truly cares. He gives his patients his cell phone and home phone number. How many surgeons do that?rnrnOne incident on a piece of steak stuck for many hours comes to mind. To big a bite, not enough chewing, etc. Finally broke down and called him (it was a Saturday). Unfortunatately, he was at a bariatric seminar in Florida and not in town. But he was with me the whole time. I ended up driving to San Francisco to see Dr. Cirangle to have fluid removed to allow the meat to pass through the stoma. Even with the time change, Dr. McKeen insisted once everything was done (it was 3AM his time by then) that I call and let him know how I was doing. He and Dr. Cirangle also talked.rnrnI have had a slip with a revision after trying everything. With the revision I had a low profile port inserted and also had a lower body lift.rnrnWith all said and done, I would not be where I am today without Dr. McKeen's supportive attitude and team. His aftercare is phenomenal and he listens to where you are at to help determine what fill level would be best. With all my heart I would recommend him to anyone searching for a GREAT bariatric surgeon.rnCarol

Very positive and reasurring that this would be a great oppertunity for me. I have not been under a size 18/20 since I had my first baby seven years ago. I am on a first name basis with all his staff which makes me feel important and not just another patient. He went over EVERYTHING so it was crystal clear. I would recommend Dr. McKeen and his staff, highly. I think that surgical competance and bed side manner are a must.
