Park Nicollet Bariatric Surgery Program Bariatric Center
Dr Jones is very kind. He has alot of experience and he didn't make me feel bad about my weight at all. He is a very busy man, but does not make you feel rushed. His office staff is awesome. I had to wait awhile for them to fax my information over to my insurance, but after that everything went very fast. He informed me of all the risks of the surgery. I would recommend him to everybody considering the gastric bypass!
My husband and I enjoyed meeting with Dr Svendsen. We found him easy to talk with and he answered my questions thoroughly. His office staff is great, they have been really accomodating and worked with me to get my surgery scheduled before my sister leaves the country for six months.
Their program places a lot of emphasis on structured aftercare program to help their patients succeed.
Dr Svendsen did address the risks of surgery - including death (1 in 300). When I blurted out "How many of yours have died?" he started laughing and said "You know, I think everyone is THINKING that but usually people don't actually ask that question...but the answer is ZERO." ...good enough for me! I need a surgeon that can laugh and be honest...and have a clean record.
So far, I would give Dr Svendsen two thumbs up!
Dr. Jones was a professional in every way. In my pre-op visit he was clear and direct and made sure that I was aware of what the procedure entailed and the risks involved.
In terms of his bedside manner, he left a little to be desired. As I was being prepped for surgery at 6:00 AM in the morning, he stopped by for approximately one minute to say hi before running off to a meeting. I have not seen him since. I was discharged from the hospital on Christmas, and I assume he was home that day. Since then, I have not heard from him and I don't know if I will ever see him again.
His support team is phenomenal, however. The office staff at Park Nicollet is very friendly and helpful. His nurse Dorothy is a dream come true -- a kind, talented, and wonderful nurse who is truly on your side. She answered countless questions for me and assisted me in pushing through my insurance approval in record time. I would not have been able to do this without her.
The Bariatric team at Park Nicollet is terrific. They have a structured pre-op and after-care program that has won rave reviews from patients, from me, and from my insurance company. You receive a handbook that becomes your bible over the next few months -- telling what to eat, when, and how to get your protein. They could not have made it any easier for us.
My review of Dr. Jones is that he is considered one of the best surgeons in the entire state. His surgical competence and experience are unparalled, but his bedside manner is not comforting to those who may need a little more hand-holding before going under the knife.
My first impression of Dr. Svendsen was that he was very thorough and professional. He answered all my questions. I was anticipating a 4-1/2 hour surgery time because of adhesions from previous surgeries; but he completed the procedure in 2 hours and I had no complications! His office staff have been very helpful and kind. The aftercare is highly emphasized; and is very structured. I would rate him as excellent with both great surgical competence and great bedside manner.
Dr. Svendsen is a wonderful, knowledgeable, excellent surgeon and a marvelous human being. He really seems to personally care about his patients and only wants what is the best for them. He has a way of making his patients feel comfortable with him and also has a great sense of humor.
I had a leak post-op (someone has to make those darned stats don't they? LOL) and he was there to see me just about every day of the 20 days I was in the hospital. He was genuinely concerned for my well-being and took a very cautious course of action to make certain that I would have a great outcome.
I have only good things to say about Dr. Svendsen and his surgical abilities and have told many people how highly I feel about him and how much confidence I have in him.
I have only met Dr Svendsen once so far. During my surgical consult I found him to be very personable, humorous and informative. He answered all my questions. I never felt rushed, although I did not take a lot of his time either. I am very impressed by the office staff and the overall quality and organization of the program. I contacted many WLS programs and went through the entire process in 3 different programs. This one was by far the most organized and easiest to navigate, mostly because you see all the "workup" staff at the same place on mostly on the same day - the psychologist, dietitian, physical therapist and a physician.
Dr. Jones is very friendly and personable. My impression of him only improved with time. He was very calming to me when I was in the pre-op room before surgery, as I was very scared. Dr. Jones' staff are very friendly and helpful. There really isn't anything that I didn't like about Dr. Jones. Dr. Jones and his staff make it clear from the very beginning that you must follow through with aftercare appointments and invite you to contact them anytime with questions. Their aftercare program is not exactly structured but they remind you at appointments when you are due for another and they make sure you schedule the next one on your way out. The one thing I would benefit from that they do not do is actually calling patients who are early post-op and checking in once a week or so for the first few months. I have heard other post-ops make reference to having a "distall" bypass or some other kind of bypass; I was not informed that there were different types of bypasses; I thought there was just one kind. I didn't know to ask, but I now know that I would have liked a bit more information in that area. The risks of the surgery were not sugar coated or glossed over whatsoever. They are dealth with matter-of-factly and openly. Overall, I would rate Dr. Jones and his staff a 9 out of 10. He is a wonderful surgeon and has a terrific bedside manner.
