Midwest Surgical Associates Bariatric Center
I first met Dr. Opie at a Kansas City Weight Loss Surgery Support Group meeting where he was the speaker. I was impressed how thoroughly he had researched the procedure and all the nuances and variations. He requires all prospective patients to go through a 1 hour seminar with him, then a one-on-one meeting. I thought he rushed through the seminar and somewhat through the appointment and seemed a little disengaged, but it could have just been a bad day. He did make it a point to talk with me the morning of the procedure and check for last minute questions or nerves. He rounded at the hospital at least twice a day which is rare. He really glowed the last day I was there. I freaked and did not want to leave the hospital even though I really was ready. He talked me through all the reasons why I was more stable than I thought I was but still worked it to where it was my decision to leave. I'm willing to drive the 2 hours to go back to him for other surgical issues I might ever have.
I met with Dr Opie December 12 2003 I was very impressed since I had been shopping for surgeons in the area I did not like the 2 other ones I had met with and some was the cockyness that they portrayed-Dr Opie was very informative and his scheduler Karen I was not sure how to take her but in the end she was very helpful and pleasant. I am a nurse and Dr Opie didn't assume that I knew it all and I was thankful for that. Aftercare is very important and I felt as if he knew me not just as a patient but as a person and he was very compassionate he really is super
My first impression of Dr. Opie was that he was very professioal and seems to know what he was talking about. His staff was the greatest. Dr. Opie and his staff informed me of what would take place before and after the surgery, and what i could expect for the rest of my life. Dr Opie was everything that i wanted in a surgeon and a doctor.
2/27/04: I had my first meeting with Dr. Opie today, he seemed very knowledgable and very thorough in the information and suggestions that he gave me. He took time to make sure all my questions were answered and his staff was very professional.
My first impression of Dr. Opie was good. He was very up front with the numbers on the surgery that he had done to date. He let me ask questions and was willing to listen to my responces. He wanted to make sure that all bases were covered before doing surgery. That went as far as sending me to a the Cardioligist that will be involved in the surgery.
His staff seemed to be very nice , his person that does the scheduling I am not so happy with. I went to Dr. Opie with an approval letter from my insurance for the surgery and it still took several telephone calls to get the surgery scheduled. The thing that made me the most unhappy was the fact that I meet other patients that had NO insurance approval and they had surgery dates scheduled.
Dr, Opie seems to have a very good after surgery plan in tact. The thing that I was impressed with is that he does not send you home before he feels that you are ready to go not matter what the insurance says.
My surgery is scheduled for the 8th of March so I will have to wait until after surgery to finish answering these questions.
I have only dealt with Dr. Opie two times so far, but I think he is great!
He is kind and talks to you like an adult peer. He is direct but nice.
When I had my endoscopy, he did the procedure. Just before my anesthesia, he came in and talked to me. He seemed genuinely concerned. I have never seen such bedside manner. He looked me in the eye when we talked. He didn't seem rushed, like I was just another number in the file.
I have nothing bad to say! He is great so far!
Dr Opie was very knowlegable, kind. He and his staff were very organized. His practice is a "new" one for WLS surgery, however they were very organized and on the ball. Also met a new WLS friend in the waiting room! bonus. Dr Opie seems to have his ducks in a row and was familiar with the support group director in my area. He and the hospital already have training set up for aftercare. Yep, I was impressed!
Surgery went very well. Dr. Opie is still great. He is very supportive, he encourages us to call anytime we have a question and says that there are no little or stupid questions. Three weeks post op and my questions were almost all answered before I ever had surgery!
