DR. MAGNUSON IS VERY INFORMATIVE, HE HAD COME HIGHLY RECOMMENDED BY SOMEONE WHO HAD THEIR SURGERY DONE BY HIM LAST YEAR. HIS ASSITANT, ANDI, WAS GREAT SHE WAS ALWAYS ON TOP OF THINGS. AFTER TALKING WITH HIM I FEEL VERY COMFORTABLE ABOUT THE SURGERY.

I liked him a lot. His makes a personal commitment to
follow-up with his patients. He came to visit
me while in the hospital to insure my well-being.
He seems awfully busy, however. Although I
felt that he answered all of my questions, I
always had the nagging feeling that he was
extremely rushed. Not his fault, just so many
patients.

Dr. Magnuson is very compassionate. He took a real interested in me as an individual. His staff is also very considerate.
I have only had my consultation, I had to appeal with my insurance co.(Aetna US Healthcare) 2 times before they approved me.

Dr. Magnuson was very informative about the surgery. He was able to answer all of my questions, and boy did I have a lot. Before I was seen for my consultation, his office sent me a book of information that was very informative and in debth about the surgery (RNY), nutrition, follow up care, etc..
Althought I initally thought I would be able to have the surgery laproscopically Dr. Magnuson explain why he doesn't choose to perform that way.

Best of luck and wish everyone success in their persuit for a healthier life.

Dr. Magnuson took a great deal of time to explain the procedure, the criteria, the recovery and expected results. He answered all questions posed thoroughly. His secretary Jerri, was extremely helpful in getting the insurance approval. She did request a diet history from me in order to present them with all my previous attempts. Any time I have called for Dr. Magnuson, he always returned my calls. He will continue to follow me for a year. Dr. Magnuson performed my surgery using a very small incision, 4.5 inches, for that I am very grateful. He did an amazing job.

Dr. Magnuson is very patient, friendly, and makes me feel secure that things will go well. He is also very busy, so unless you are very persistent and/or very lucky be prepared to wait for a date. (note: this is true for many Johns Hopkins Dr.'s as it is such a world famous hospital) I have met with him twice so far, the first was for me to ask questions and make sure he thought I was a good canidate ect. The second time was for my parents to meet him before my surgery and let them ask any questions. He was able to answer all my mom's questions (a definite challenge) and did not make us feel that we were holding him up. It was great to have my parents on board and feeling more comfortable about it all. (I am 23, and a graduate student, so I need their support.)
His office staff is very friendly, especially Ashley the nutritionist, and have been able to assist in trying to juggle my appointments so that I could get everything done and be on my way to recovery before school starts. So, far I am very impressed...more to come Post-op.

Impression of My Doctor: My first meeting with Dr. Magnuson gave me a sense of trust and confidence. I had read up on him prior to my appointment w/him @ Johns Hopkins, and was impressed w/his credentials. I chose him because he does the Open RandY and removes your gallbladder at the same time to avoid the inevitable gall stones that form due to rapid weight loss. The only negative thing I can say about him is that it took MONTHS to get an appointment w/him just to consult me on the surgery. But I guess that's a good thing because he must be in high demand.

His personal assistant that does his scheduling seemed very flippant at first which...sort of intimidated me. But after speaking to her a couple of times, I recognized it was just her personality & she was actually quite helpful and friendly.

I had my surgery on Aug 23rd. Due to unforseen complications, I had difficulty coming out of the anesthesia and post surgical morphine. Dr Magnuson and his resident mustered their resources and pulled me through! He is congenial and is concerned with your comfort at all times. He has structured pre-op and post-op support groups. Besides being Chief of Surgery at Hopkins Bayview Med Ctr, he seems to be truely interested in each patient.

On the negative side, I would have liked to see him more. In my five day stay, he averaged three visits. BUT, his residents were there round the clock and communicated with him often.

Great first impression!
Great Staff!
I had a major concern about the 10% mortality rate. Dr. Magnuson covered the reasons why that increases or decreases, patient to patient.
He gets 2 thumbs up!

Dr. Magnuson and his secretary, Gerry are fabulous. They are very helpful and straightforward in communicating all information I needed. They were very supportive.

I am very satified thus far.
