Johns Hopkins Obesity Surgery Center Bariatric Center
I have only met Dr. Magnuson once so far. I really liked him. He was friendly and understanding, not at all judgemental. He took time to explain everything to me. I went with my husband and he also liked him alot and thought he was very professional and kind. I have spoken with his secretary who was also very friendly and cooperative. She seemed to really understand the ins and outs of getting insurance approval.
He is an excellent surgeon. He has years of experience and takes time to explain all aspects of the procedure, including giving you literature.
His office staff is very helpful. She worked with me a great deal on insurance approval.
I have nothing negative to say re: Dr. Magnuson. It should be noted that he is a part of the very large Johns Hopkins system. I did have difficulty reaching him on two occassions. When I asked for him to be paged, I was put into a maze of residents and attending M.D.'s none of whom can really make a decision.
When I reported this to Dr. Magnuson, he corrected the problem.
Aftercare is mostly handled by the nutritionist, and resident. Dr. Magunson will answer any questions, but one must have their questions ready.
Usuing a scale on 1-10, 10 being the highest rating, I would rate Dr. Magunson a 10 as a surgeon; an 8 for aftercare thus far.
Dr. Magnuson at John Hopkins Bayview MC:
Dr. Magnuson was very comforting when I first meant him. He took time to answer everyone of mine and my husband's questions. He completly explained what the surgery entailed and the risks involved also. His office manager Gerri is wonderful! She even had suggestions for help with my insurance company. There is a very structed aftercare that is coordinated between Dr. Magnuson and JH Weight Management Center. Dr. Magnuson strongly encourages you to use this tool as needed. More after I have my surgery....
I interviewed Dr. Fobi, Dr. Vanguri, and Dr. Magnuson. I have selected Dr. Magnuson who is an assistant professor of surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He is the Director of the Johns Hopkins Obesity Surgery Service. He answered all of my questions and his secretary, Geri, is very helpful. He insisted that I see a psychologist and nutritionist before surgery. He explained the risk. Johns Hopkins has a Weight Management Center, with a support group, to assist you through pre-op and post-op.
Also, I did not go through the Weight Management Center. I called Dr. Magnuson's office directly and explained to Gerri that I was a patient of Dr. Vanguri's and my insurance approval was days away. I told Gerri I had already seen an psychologist and nutritionist. I explained to her due to my work schedule, I wanted to be scheduled for surgery asap and requested that she asked Dr. M to fit me into his schedule. She agreed and gave me a tentative date, pending the insurance approval letter.
My surgeon will be Dr. Thomas Magnuson, who is the head of John's Hopkins Weight Loss Surgery Center. I met with him for the first time on the 27th of December and immediately felt "right" about my decision to seek this surgery. He was easy to talk with, had obviously been through this before and answered all of my husband's and my questions. Dr. Magnuson has performed over 60 of these surgeries in the past three years. He will do an RNY on me.
I met with him in his Odenton office - all future visits will be in Baltimore at the Bayview facility.
He has a support group which I will be joining.
The next step for me is to meet with the psychologist and the weight management team. Those will both occur on the same day. He wrote the referal and said if I don't hear from them in 10 business days to call them. He also said his secretary, Geri, could help facilitate this.
It was obvious he has fought battles with insurance companies before and will work with me on this.
He also told me about the Johns Hopkin's web site dealing with these issues. There is a picture and biography of him at this site.
