Jackson Health System Bariatric Center

9/10/2003, I had an appointment yesterday with my and met my surgeon, they switched me over to Eddie Gomez because I am not having the lapband surgery and the lap-rny. He is very, very, nice, very knowledgeable and made me feel very comfortable. He actually did his residency in the hospital where I was born in New York. He made me feel very at ease and I cant wait to just get this all over with. I am very exicited but still nervous too.
6/19/2003, I went to Dr. Jacobs office for the first time yesterday. I had a 1:00 appointment and I left his office at 4:30. He was a very nice considerate doctor once I finally got to meet with him. I have to go for the psych and the sleep test and am hoping to have the surgery ok'd and done within the next 3 months. I will keep you posted.
8/8/2003, well I have finally gotten everthing sent in to Humana for approval. I went and got a psych evual and my PCP gave me a letter of neccissity and went to get tested to sleep apnea..I have it very badly so I am really hoping that Humana ok's my surgery although my insurance at work just renewed in July and they have now made anything weight loss related part of their famous "exclusion policy" except when it is medically necessary. I am really anxious to find out. I will keep you posted.

Dr Gomez is very informitive and straight forward. He tells you the risks and the rewards. There is always a risk but the good far out weigh the bad when it comes to something this important.
The office staff I'm sure have quite a lot on ther mind when it comes to making the office run in a smooth fashion. I personally have no use for them. Maybe they could pertend that they have some compassion.
I find that they offer nothing except for follow-up visits to weigh in.
I was never informed of any aftercare or support group that they have from there office. You are really one your own after the surgery.

verry professional

I FIRST WENT TO SEE DR. MOISES JACOBS BECAUSE I WAS LOOKING INTO THE LAPBAND. AFTER I CHANGE MY MIND AND DECIDED DON THE GASTRIC BYPASS ANOTHER DR. IN THE SAME OFFICE TOOK OVER IT WAS DR. EDDIE GOMEZ A VERY YOUNG DR. BUT VERY NICE AND VERY PATIENT. MY IMPRESSIONS HAVE NOT CHANGE AT ALL. AFTER MY SURGERY BOTH DR. GOMEZ AND DR. JACOBS VISITED ME IN THE HOSPITAL AND TALK TO ME.
HIS OFFICE STAFF IS GOOD WHEN YOU CAN GET THEN ON THE PHONE OR PERSONALLY. NOT EASY
I LIKE THEIR STRAIGHT FORWARD WAY TO TALK ABOUT THE RISK.
YOU HAVE TO DO YOUR OWN HOMEWORK IN GETTING THE PAPER WORK TOGETHER TO SUBMIT TO THE INSURANCE CO.
I DO NOT KNOW ABOUT AFTER CARE YET I AM ONLY ONE WEEK OUT. BUT I KNOW ENOUGH THAT I DO NOT THINK I WILL NEED MUCH AFTER CARE AND I WILL LOOK TO MY PRIMARY FOR THE TEST ETC.
I BELIEVE THEY HAVE A STRUCTURE PROGRAM BUT THEY HAVE NOT TRIED TO SELL IT TO ME YET.
YES HE WAS VERY UP FRONT WITH THE RISK
I WILL GIVE THEM AN GOOD TO EXCELENT
I THINK THEY HAVE BOTH SURGICAL COMPETENCE AND BED SIDE MANNERS.
I WILL RECOMMEND THEM TO ANY ONE.

My first impression was enough to convince myself that Dr Jacobs should be my surgeon. He was warm, informative and made sure I understood there were risks involved in this type of procedure. My impression of him has changed over time. Now I like him Even Better
Dr Jacobs' office is very busy. His staff is very pleasant and his insurance manager, Emilio, is the individual who worked very hard with my case when we encounterrd several problems created by errors made by my insurance carrier. There were times when I was ready to give up and Emilio gave me not only his time and effort but also provided emotional support when I neded it most.
Patients hould know that Dr. Jacobs is very clear about explaining all about laparascopic surgery and its risks.
Dr Jacobs and his entire staff, Dr.Eddy Gomez, Christina Lopez Penalver and Dr. T. Jesse were absolutely great .I have no words to describe how fantastic they have been with me.
Dr Jacobs and his staff were very explicit about the importance of an after care program. While they were not pushy, they recommended Circle of Life as a choice for a complete after surgery program.I have already made an appointment with this company .
In a scale of 1 to 10 I rate Dr Jacobs and his staff a 100, yes I mean 100.I believe he heads an outstandingh team of surgeons who take a very special and personal interest in his patients.I remember telling Dr Jacobs that I knew that I was in good hands and he kept answering that I was in God's hands.Dr Eddy Gomez the other surgeon I met is a very young and brilliant surgeon and he also made me feel very confortable minutes before and after the surgery. They must have done a wonderful job because 9 days after surgery I have already lost 20 pounds and I feel better than I have felt in many years.I am even looking forward to feeling better.
I highly recommend Dr. Moises Jacobs and his staff.
I DONT KNOW IF DR JACOBS IS THE BEST IN ALL ASPECTS BUT IN MY CASE HE WAS. I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING NEGATIVE TO SAY ABOUTY HIM AND HIS STAFF.

I went to both Dr. Fleites and Dr. Jacobs. I chose Dr. Jacobs as he has much more experience and was highly recommended. My experience with Dr. Fleites was very brief and he seemed very impersonal. He told me he had only done a few lap bands.
I am very happy with Dr. Jacobs and the care I have received. I have two acquaintanced that also have the lap band through him and are doing very well. He did emphasize the fact that this was not a miracle cure and that it needed to be taken seriously. The risks of surgery were addressed well in advance. He is very competent as well as very approachable and has excellent bedside manner.
The hospital overnight stay was mediocre. The night nurse was less that adequate. Never came once when I called her at night. She would just turn the light off and never show up. Quite a prohlem if you need to use the restroom and can't get out of bed.

I switched to this surgeon because I was not feeling very good about my previous doctor. I had my first meeting with him yesterday. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! He was warm and friendly. He didn't have a G_d complex, as some do. He treated me with respect. He talked to me frankly about what my choice would mean, and let me know that the lap band is an excellent choice, but means you still have to make good food choices and exercise - it's not like the RNY where there is malabsorption to help you lose.
His office staff was very friendly.
What did I like least about him? Nothing! I was completely comfortable with him and thrilled that he has done over 300 bands and knows his way around the procedure.
Future patients should know that Dr. Jacobs will ask you to go on a low fat, low carb, high protein diet for a month prior to surgery to assure that you do not come to surgery with an enlarged, fatty liver. That can be difficult.
For aftercare, there are monthly patient meetings, web groups with daily correspondence, and he is VERY easy to contact.
I rate him very highly and think that anyone who is having band surgery in this geographic area should consider him.

Dr Jacobs is brilliant. I had a great surgery. 5 weeks post-op, I am not thrilled with follow-up. Have not had any since two and half weeks after sugery. I know they are attempting to secure a bariatric coordinator, I think that would help tremendously. He was very honest about the risks, actually spoke to me about several individuals/cases whereby patients had died from complications. Actually scared me, but I admired his honesty and eventually, after interviewing several surgeons, I selected him. He is both charming and exceptional as a surgeon.

I DIDN'T PERSONALLY MEET WITH DR. JACOBS, I WAS ACTUALLY SEEN BY DR. GOMEZ. HE IS ONE OF THE DOCTORS THAT WORKS WITH DR. JACOBS. HE IS A YOUNG DOCTOR, BUT VERY NICE & INFORMATIVE, AND HIS STAFF WAS ALSO VERY NICE. I WOULD ADVISE ANYONE WHO IS GOING TO BE SEEN BY DR. JACOBS TO BRING THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION SO THAT YOUR PROCESS FOR INSURANCE APPROVAL IS FASTER. . .
1-A LETTER WRITTEN BY YOU TO YOUR INSURANCE WITH ALL THE DIETS & EXERCISE YOU HAVE TRIED IN THE PAST.
2- GET A PSYCHIATRIC EVALUATION
3- GET A RECOMANDATION/APPROVAL LETTER FROM YOUR PRIMARY PHYSICIAN.
THEY WILL NOT SUBMIT YOUR REQUEST TO YOUR INSURANCE UNTIL YOU GIVE THEM ALL THREE ITEMS DESCRIBED ABOVE !!
I WAITED ALMOST 2 MONTHS FOR MY FIRST CONSULTATION & WHEN I FINALLY GET THERE I WAS TOLD I NEEDED THOSE THREE LETTER'S, BEFORE THEY EVEN START DEALING WITH MY INSURANCE. SO IN OTHER WORDS GO PREPARED !!
