Clinique Michel Gagner MD Bariatric Center
My very fist impression was, he is nothing like I thought he would be. After reading through alot of his patient profiles, in which some people say he is cold and not very friendly, I was nervous but realized within seconds this was a truly wonderful person and amazingly talented man. My impression hasn't changed and I doubt it will. The man said I could email him if I had any questions! That blows my mind. And his turnaround time with those emails is even more incredible. A surgeon as busy as his is, answering MY email in less than 1 day! I chose well and I'm extremely LUCKY! Office staff was very nice and they explained what they were doing and why. They all smiled and joked. It is a very pleasant atmosphere. There is nothing I didn't like about the Dr. I would hope that Dr. Gagner's future patients would not judge him by what they might read on other patient profiles. I would hope they would meet him and render a verdict based on personal experience and nothing more. Dr. Gagner and his staff emphasize aftercare. My impression is that Dr. Gagner answers the tough questions and ultimately determines whether or not surgery is necessary and/or possible. I believe (in my experience) that Liz, The program Nutritionist was the one to put the stamp on aftercare and she really made sure I understood what I am looking at long-term. They do have an after-care program. I'm unsure of whether my INS CO. will allow me to benefit from it, as they said in a letter that I would have to make other aftercare arrangements with an IN-Network physician. The risks associated with the type of surgery I chose were addressed. I feel confident that I have the information I was seeking and that I was able to make an informed decision based upon it. It is not for me to "rate" Dr. Gagner. He is a man of talent and skill beyond my comprehension. I will tell you that I would trust no other to perform this surgery for me. I believe that in the grand scheme of things, bedside manner is nice, but surgical competence is better. I require my surgeon to be knowledgeable and skilled not friendly and talkative. However, I was lucky in that, I believe I got both.
Let me say that before I had this consultation with Dr. Gagner, I was a nervous mess. I did want a surgeon that would be friendly and ally my fears. But now, I understand that is not what is important. And especially, that is not their job. This is a dangerous surgery. It's risks are not to be taken lightly and fears should be analyzed and taken Seriously.
I'm told that "completely 100% positive reviews are generally less informative and or even suspect", so I will say this as my only negative experience with my entire consultation... It took me 4 hours to get there!!
My father is a nephrologist-internist and he is the person who found Dr.Gagner for me. I felt very comfortable with him from the very beginning, and that has not changed one iota. He answered every question, did not make me feel "less than" no matter what I asked about, and most importantly, was very empathetic. The office staff is phenomenal, esp. Diana, his PA. The only person I had a problem with was the psych. I was referred to, Dr. Patty Matz. But once the problem with her became known, Diana immediately took care of it, and referred me to a great Dr. , Dr.Dobrinski. I do not think that Dr, Matz will be getting anymore referrals. Aftercare is extremely important, and I am really excited about those days after December 8th!I have appointments with the nutritionists, as well as support group meetings, and follow up care with Dr.Gagner.
He made me very aware of all the risks associated with the surg., but then again I went into this whole process with plenty of research of my own, and with my Father. I give Dr. Gagner and his staff the highest marks. As for surg. comp. or bedside manner, both are very important. I know from personal research, and the physician referrals of Dr.Gagner that were given to my Dad that his surgical competence is outstanding, and from personal meetings with him, I believe his bedside manner will be no less.
What a great person. He was kind, caring, warm, understanding, straight-forward! His partner Dr. Pomp is just as wonderful.
He explained the risks of an RNY to DS revision. He was able to do it LAP, even though I had multiple obsticles possibly preventing LAP...
Both his bedside manner and his surgical competence are 'second-to-none' in the business.
Good luck!!!

met with Dr. Michel Gagner on September 17th. After reading the reviews I was quite apprehensive. I found Dr. Gagner to be kind, knowledgeable and he set my mind at ease. I feel totally confident in his ability to perform my surgery. He was honest and upfront.
As I had suspected, he will not do the RNY on me. I am too high risk. But instead of giving me a flat NO, he gave me an option and explained why this option would be best for me. He spent as much time as I needed with me and answered all my questions.
He is going to perform a sleeve gastrectomy on me to begin with. There is minimal anesthesia involved with this procedure. It is the only option for me. He said that if in six months, I am off some of the meds and doing better, and if I still want to have the RNY, he will consider it then. I am literally putting my life in this mans hands and I feel totally confident that he will do the right thing.
His office staff were also very kind and courteous. Coming from Iowa, they did everything possible to get all my appointments scheduled while I was in NY. They are very good to work with.
The team of doctors that also work with him are wonderful. I met with a endocrinologist, cardiologist, and had the endoscopy done while in NY.
I will have to say that I saw him on the first day in his new office and the staff was kind of unorganzied. But they were kind and apologetic and did everything to make it go as smooth as possible.
I do not have a surgery date yet...we are still waiting on cardiac clearance. I will keep you updated.
I was very impressed by his cridentials. He seem confident of himself which made me more confident. His office staff is great. He is straight to the point. To me surgical competence is most important and Dr. Gagner has that. I would recommend him to any one on a scale from 1 to 10 he is a 10 in my book
Didnt think too much. Went to Dr Ren who is brillant,
sweet, and every other adjective thats
positive
Was quite reserved and humorless at first but warmed up at later meetings and after the op. The staff were very friendly and helpful although a little disorganised leading to long waiting times. He did an extremely difficult operation and left only a few scars. With my BMI at 60 most other surgeons would have opted for either open-surgery or else a two-stage laparoscopic surgery. He did it all at once laparascopically but needed two extra cuts. I believe from others that he is one of the top bariatric surgeons internationally and that is why I chose him.
My first impression of Dr. Gagner is that he is quietly confident.
His staff is generally courteous and competent. Although I was disappointed to learn that Dr. Feng left the office to move out west.
Dr. Gagner is extremely busy. I had to wait hours for my initial consult.
To someone like me, surgical competence is more important than bedside manner. But in addition, I do expect a certain degree of courtesy.
I plan to report further after my surgery.
