Center for Obesity Surgery in Gainsville Bariatric Center

Dr. Thoburn has developed a very thorough Power Point presentation that will save them, as well as patients, quite a bit of time. It took care of many questions I had even before we met one-on-one. My impression of hima nd his staff so far is that they are very professional, capable and caring. I do love the program they've set up that really helps you adjust your thinking about food and how you'll handle things. I can't wait to get started on that. It'll be a little tough getting there for a support group (I'm 2 hours away), but I WILL do it. This is a drastic decision that will alter my whole life for the better, so I'm not going to play any wimp-out games on anything. Not only do they address the risks but also are very thorough in their pre-testing to minimize risks as much as possible. Overall, I'd give them an 11 out of 1-10.

He was in a rush and not overly friendly.
Yes
Very friendly
To start with he was a little cold.
He is extremely dedicated to his patients. He is a doctor you can depend on.
His staff calls you at home to make sure you are following through on his orders.
Yes, his dietician is wonderful and caring.
He did hold back anything! He was very upfront with the dangers. He did not sugar coat anything.
Excellent
Surgical competence. Who cares if he has a personality. I just want to know that he can handle anything that can possibly go wrong.

I was very impressed initially with the information packet sent out by his office. It was very straight forward, in terms that were understandable to a person beginning to research weight loss surgery.
Once I completed the extensive package and they called for my first appointment, I was so excited and couldn't wait for my visit. I took the whole day off of work and so did my fiance'.
I was most impressed with the office staff and their knowledge and organization. They really focus on the nutritional aspect and aftercare. On our first visit, we met with Dr. Thoburn, the insurance co-ordinator and also the nutritionalist. I didn't feel rushed by any of them.
I had a page long, typed list of questions and Dr. Thoburn was EXCELLENT about answering each question. I'm thrilled and can't wait for insurance approval so I can get a surgery date!

VERY SERIOUS, VERY PROFESSIONAL. MY IMPRESSION HASNT CHANGED ANY. OFFICE STAFF HAS BEEN SO FRIENDLY AND HELPFUL, THANKS SHIRLEY!!!!
CANT SAY ENOUGH ABOUT THE WHOLE TEAM,WHAT LITTLE I HAVE INTERACTED WITH THEM, HAS BEEN SUPER. HAVE HEARD NOTHING BUT GOOD THINGS FROM MANY, MANY PEOPLE.

My first visit with him, left me feeling like he was trust worthy. I ask some questions and he answer wether it was good or bad. He is young looking.
The people in the office were nice and seem very knowledgable.

I was recommended to Dr. Thoburn by one of my co-workers Edith Reynolds. She had the surgery in November 2000. I met with Dr. Thoburn Oct. 4th, 2002. I was very impressed. He answered all of my questions. He took time and explained all of the possible risks. I was approved for the surgery on 01-06-03 and now waiting on a date.

My first impression of Dr. Brient was that he really cared and wanted to helpme.
I still believe that to be true.
I was somewhat put off on my first office visit by the dietician. She was not real warm and friendly. Ifelt that she was trying to pigeon hole me to fit a category and was not listening to me as an individual.
The thing I like the least about Dr. Brient's office are the long waits every time I have an office visit.
My aftercare involved structured scheduled visits at intervals of 2 weeks,1 month,3 months,6 months, 1 year, and my final scheduled visit was at 18 months. I have been formally released from care, but are able at any time to contact them if I need them.
The risks and post op stay (for me in ICU) were discussed in detail.
I would rate him at the top, I would repeat it all tomorrow.
Both competence and bedside manner are important, and thankfully Dr. Brient has both, but if he didn't competence is far more important than conversation.

I met Dr. Thoburn on 11-22-02. My first impression was that he was very young. He may be in his mid 30's. He is professional and very nice. There was nothing about him I didn't like, he was pleasant and intelligent. Some people may not like his "to the point attitude." He is tells you the pros and cons of the surgery, he addresses your situation as well. Aftercare is a huge part of his program, he tells you plainly that you must follow his plan. he then has a nutritionist tell you the same thing it is very structured and written out in plain english for you. They really push their lifetime diet. They are "for real" about it, and they told us, if we gained weight between our consult and our surgery date that they would NOT do the surgery!!! His staff is competent and "on the ball." On a scale of 1 to 10, I would give him a 10. He appears to be very competent about the surgery, and his bedside manner is great as well. I am impressed.

I am waiting on his office to call me back with my first appointment....I will update.
