Since I have had several people ask me about Melissa's complications. Although I don't know all of the EXACT details, here is what I'm aware of, this is an excerpt from an email from another member of the board: Quite honestly I don't know exactly all of the details, but what was going around the office here did not sound good at all. I did have the opportunity to speak to her husband about her condition on a couple of occasions & discovered that the surgery itself took twice as long as it was supposed to. From there, the opening was not large enough for her to even keep water or even ice chips down. Due to this she was back in surgery again. After this surgery her bowels collapsed, and she was fighting an infection. From here she had emergency open surgery due to a blood clot, in which she caught a second infection, and came down with fluid on her lungs. Most of the time while in the hospital she was kept in a drug induced coma. At some point, there was more that happened, but I'm not exactly sure what, but the doctors had declared her brain dead this past Sunday. Her husband wanted to be sure of this so they did further tests to check for brain activity on Monday, and unfortunately there was no change. The family decided to let her go & take her off of life support on Tuesday at noon, but her heart actually stopped on it's own just about 30 minutes or so before then.
I was actually planning on having the LAP-RNY myself as well, but I must say that these complications are a true reality to me now, and I've changed my mind due to this. I am still considering the LAP-BAND procedure, but definitely not the RNY.
I hope that this helps you in your journey. I must say that this has definitely opened my eyes on the whole idea of WLS altogether.
If you have any further questions, give me a holler. I'll be glad to answer them if I can.
Sincerely,
Jodie
