Question:
Protein...again, I know, but EVERY drink I try makes me throw up...

What are you drinking? I had one that was somewhat tolerable, but after a few shakes I grew intolerant to it too. I'm not getting sick from sugar or fat, because I've tried them all and that isn't related to my barf factor. How are you getting your protein in with supplements. What are you taking and how are you mixing it so the gag scale is a 1 instead of a 10+?!?!? I'm getting really worried now that I am 6 months out and my surge of energy is going away and I know it's related to my diet. Plus, if I can't get the protein in (which fills me up) then I resort to carbs...which lead to my hellacious plateau. HELP ME!!!!    — Paula Prichard (posted on July 21, 2002)

About every other week I make up a protein pudding with my protein powder ( I like Proscore and Adkins protein mix). I put all my dry ingredients in a bowl first. Sugar free pudding of any kind, add my four scoops of protein powder, then add skim milk until it is the right consistency. Then I add a couple of Tablespoons of lite coolwhip to make a kind of mousse. Usually it takes about 3 cups of skim milk. You can use any flavor pudding you like. I have even added peanut butter to chocolate. Yummy! Tonight I made strawberry mousse by using vanilla sugar free pudding and strawberry Adkins protein powder. It is very good. I then put three small strawberries on top. I take it to work and it gives me about 24 grams of protein (just an extimate) in each 1/2 cup serving. Try it. You might like it better than drinks. By the way, I like Adkins ready to drink canned protein shakes. Vanilla is the best. It has 170 calories and 20 g of protein. Not bad.

GNC has a liquid protien that i have lived on for the last yer and a half..it's called amino acid 1850. it is liquid...cherry or fruit punch...i think its fruit punch...anyway it can be added to the water you drink and it gives it a slight flavor...after the surgery I could not stand the taste of wter anymore so I flavor it with a little crystal light...which I also couldn't stand and really still can't full strength...but i put three tbls of protien 3/4 water in a bottle an d the rest crystal light.... you can put the protien in anything you like...some put it in gatorade. this was approved by my nutritionest...so I wish you good luck with it.

Eggs, cheese, peanut butter, cottage cheese, Sugar-free Instant Breakfast. There is plenty of real food out there that will give you protein without sending you into the carbohydrate-death-spiral. I love Instant Breakfasts because it gives me protein, fluid, and vitamins all at once. In the event that I am rushed in the morning, I fix it "to go". Like it as my bedtime snack too. 12 grams protein, 1 gram fat, 25 carbs. 1 ounce of "string cheese" -- individually wrapped one-ounce pieces of provolone or mozzarella that are target towards kids -- is totally portable, non-agitating to a mildly upset stomach, a great foundation for when you need to take medicine and weighs in at 8 grams protein, 5 grams fat, 1 gram carbs. Half cup lowfat cottage cheese: 14 g protein, 1 g fat, 3 g carbs. This is just a start -- and all this comes from fitday.com Experiment on the site and plan your meals and snacks for tomorrow. Sometimes I mix 1/2 scoop protein powder in with my instant breakfast. I don't gag, but it is not a comforting taste either. Really, with eggs and cheese, getting in your protein should be possible without the drinks!

I cannot tolerate any milk or whey based protein powders. I get tons of phlegm and vomit every time. There are basically four types of protein drinks: 1. Whey/milk based 2. Soy based 3. Egg-white based 4. Clear "fruit punch variety" like Isopure no carb If you use milk, try mixing your protein drink with soy milk instead, as you may be lactose intolerant and that may be causing you to vomit, or switch to an egg-white based protein like Jay Robb's protein powder [my favorite]. I also enjoy isopure no carb clear drinks which have about 40 grams of protein per bottle. I mix it with sugar free koolaid and a small amount of gatorade. Other alternatives are roasted soy nuts, beef jerky, yogurt, pork rinds. Good luck.

I use several different ones. 1. My fave is ProScore 100 choc. 2 sc + 6-8 oz water & about 1/2 C ice. 2. Also, ProBlend 55 vanillla & choc mixed (1/2 sc each) + 4 oz wtaer, shake up. for a quickie on the go. 3. And then I use Cheramino once/day, 4 T straight up. Nasty, but fast. I don't trust the collagen based proteins for an "only", but I think they're fine for an adder. 4. I also use INfusion 5000 grape or fruit punch, 6T in my water bottle, half full, freeze, add water to fill it up. I can do protein, all day, every day. BUt getting water into my face is an uphill battle every day. I have to trick me into getting. The 5000 is also a collagen based protein, so I don't trust it completely, but it DOES get a fast 64 oz water into me. (I'm not saying it is a bad product, but I don't have a track record on it yet)

Have you tried an unflavored protein powder? It is usually the flavors that throw me and the thickness. I have used MLO Milk & Egg Protein (unflavored & unsweetened) in everything from smoothies to cream of wheat to soups. One drink I like: protein powder + milk + ice + sf instant latte powder. It is thin and you can't taste the protein powder at all. I also like protein powder + milk + ice + sf oreos + 1 tbsp cool whip free for a cookies 'n' creme shake. The powder is not very expensive ($8/can) and I got it at the grocery store. You can also find it online.

i had that same problem but mine started 2 weeks post op. so my doc put me on carnation instant breakfast & soft protein foods - scrambled eggs, cheese (string or shredded) & yogurt. i found a great protein powder that i get from www.vitamintrader.com it is Jarrow's Formula Iso-Rich Soy Protein - 25grams of protein in 2 tbls - i mix it with my coffee in the morning. there is no flavor but it is a little chalky so i just keep stirring my coffee before i drink it. it only took a week to get used to. you can cook with it (and it is not chalky in food) - i throw it in with stir fry, soups, casseroles (you can also bake with it) and my family doesn't even know. it is $23 for 2 pounds (that's with s&h) i have heard that trader joes has a protein powder very similar to jarrows but i haven't checked it out yet. good luck!

I agree w/ Karen, eat the real thing. I'm 6 months out and I have not had a shake since 3 weeks out post op. I never could stand them. ( My Dr. doesn't believe in shakes!)But I use to force myself to drink them. Just eat your protien, Tuna is good as well as Karen's suggestions.

I am two weeks post-op tomorrow and found a protein powder that I really like finally. I ordered several vanilla powders through vitalady and unfortunately couldn't stand any of them. I came across a product recently called Whey Delicious and love it! I never thought I would say that about protein. I mix the vanilla with 3 oz. of OJ, 2oz. water, 4-5 frozen strawberries a few ice cubes and it tastes like a fruit smoothie from the mall. 20 grams of protein in each scoop (I use one for each drink) If you are interested in finding out more Whey delicious is on the internet at proteinishealthy.com or 800 4 A Boost.
