Question:
WHEN DO YOU LOSE THE MOST OF YOUR WEIGHT....

IS IT THE FIRST COUPLE MONTHS AFTER SURGERY OR IS IT LATER IN YOUR JOURNEY. I AM GOING ON 8 WEEKS AND HAVE LOST 47 POUNDS, BUT SEEM TO HAVE STOPPED LOSING RIGHT NOW.    — Gale G. (posted on October 29, 2002)

You will periodically experience plateaus. Theres lots of info on plateaus in the history part of the Q & A library. Definitely, you lose the most during the first 6 months or so. Our window of opportunity is up to 18 months though, so after the initial quick loss, it does slow down but continue. I'm almost 9 months post-op. This past month has been the least lost to date-each month it seems to slow down more and more, but at least, its still going down.

I know everyone is different and loses differently, but I lost most of mine in the early months post op. I had reached the -100 lbs mark by my 4 months anniversary, and I am now 11 months post op and have lost a total of 135 lbs. (I had Open RNY 11-12-01 and started at 253 lbs.)

Likes everyone has said, everyone is different. I have been the slow and steady type. NOt really hitting a plateau until the last few months, and even then, I am still losing about 5-6 pounds a month. I am fine with that. Another 6 months a 5 pounds a month and I will be golden!! See you!!!

Hi: I have always heard that you lose the most during the first six months. This makes sense, because you have the most to lose then. However, I will say that with me, I lost well in the first month (23 pounds), and not as well in the second month (10 pounds). I would not have expected this, but it seems to be picking up in the 3rd month. So far this month, I have lost 4 pounds. I am almost 10 weeks postop. It seems as if the 2nd month does present many problems to a great deal of people. Hope that helps. Good luck. Love Grace

Hi, my dtr says the first 6 mos are key, however, he says the honeymoon period is between 3-8 months. He thinks the first 2 months are for the body adjusting and then months 3-8 the punds really come off. That excites me as I am noe 2 1/2 months out and down 50lbs....Good Luck!

I lost 108 pounds by my six month aniversary. Then only 29 pounds during month 6 to a year. On Novemember 8th it will be 18 months. I'll venture a guess and say it will be about 21 pounds for month 12-18. So the first 6 months is the best time.

I lost the majority of my weight the first six months. I did have a very nasty plateau from about week 6 to week 9. I started at 280 and I lost 110 pounds by 6 months post op. However, the last three months has been VERY slow going. I'm down to 153 (3 pounds from goal)but it has taken me 3 months to take off that last 17 pounds. Chances are you are just on a plateau. Keep doing all the right things (follow your doc's food plan, drink your water and exercise- just walk if nothing else) and it will pick back up. Your body needs some time to adjust. It's dealing with a lot right now and it needs some down time to catch up. Good luck.
