Question:
I am 9 post op open rny and am hungry all the time.

I am currently on clear liquids and find that even when I have cream of wheat or applesauce (sugarfree) that I can eat 1/2 cup and still not have made a dent in my hunger. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this? Is this normal? I expect to be hungry, but I thought that cream of wheat and the applesauce would help abate this. I am worried that when I can advance my diet that I will be eating to much. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.    — Mary R. (posted on February 25, 2003)

Mary, I am 9 weeks post op..I have found that if I do not drink the protein shakes or Kool Aid type protein drinks in between meals I get hungry...Keep some sugar free popscicles around for when you are hungry they help too.

In the very beginning I found myself hungry alot, but most of it was head hunger. It's hard to tell the difference sometimes. But in a few weeks, I can almost guarantee you'll have to start forcng yourself to eat. Between months 2 and up until the 6th month, I had to make myself eat. I jsut never felt hungry. It's called the "honeymoon" phase. B/c you don;t want to eat, but have to- an dlose the most weight. Cream of wheat may make you more hungry b/c of the carbs. But you're still on liquids and are supposed to eat soups and mushy things, so it's ok. Goodluck to you!

I second the carb issue, not to mention it is going right through you... how about ff yogurt or pudding mixed with milk powder instead? The protein in it may help? You can get sf varieties of both!

I am 13 days post op and feel the same way for the past 4 days. I am beginning to worry that this won't work for me either. I am on full liquids for another week and a half and I crave meat all of the time. When I eat the mashed potatoes and other carbs I feel that I have to eat way too much before fullness registers.

While on the liquid/soft stage I too felt hungry all the time. For the first two weeks, maybe even more. I was so hungry that I actually cried about it. I was sure I would always be that hungry. In time, when I started eating regular foods I realized I was definitely getting full. Make sure to try and drink some prtoein drinks it'll help Don't worry...it will pass and this surgery will kick in. I am just over a year post op and down 162 pounds, now at 152! It will work for you too! Stay strong. ~Paula :)

Hi..I am a year post-op and have lost almost 200lbs. I found that when i hit nine months post-op I suddenly became hungry all the time..i was so scared..but i realized that I had finally been up moving, exercising, riding a bike, and my body was burning calories and i just needed more fuel for my body, thats why I was hungry, when you are hungry eat, just dont eat like a whole box of anything!! :) and its the same as always watch the carbs..up the protein and guzzle the water!! Congratulations on your weight loss..
