Question:
Soy or Whey? Is one better than the other?

I found a really great deal on MetRX soy protein at GNC. It has about 28 grams of protein per serving. I'm wondering if soy protein is okay for post-op (my date is 04/04/03!!!!) Or is whey protein preferred? If so, why? Thanks in advance for the help.    — Cleo J. (posted on March 27, 2003)

The real answer to your question is it depends. The 'best' kind of protein is the one that you like and will use. The 'best' kind is of no value to you if you hate it and won't use it. I'm not sure that either is so far superior to the other that it would make any real difference in your weight loss. Find one that you like and use it.

Acually a pretty good question. I have been using protein supplimentation for Powerlifting (hiding my obesity)for 15 years. Both are great proteins if your not going to get it from natural sources. The trick is, keeping your body adjusting. Much like dieting, anything will work for only so long. Your body adapts and slows the uptake of usable protein or you stop losing weight, whatever. So mix up your protein sources. Switch back and forth.never give your body a chance to adapt. This really does make a difference. I hope this helps.

I asked my nutritionist this very question! She says that we absorb whey better, though soy is acceptable - we just can't use as much of it.

hiya...whey isolates are absorbed best, then whey concentrate then soy...i have done a lot of research on the protein issue you can read the files on my website. i personally believe that you should use what you WILL use -- i threw up the whey protein products at two weeks post op and switched to soy and did fine. around 1 year post op i found i could tolerate the whey again so now i use both. i also have a file called "my supplements" and it says what i use, where i get it, how i use it etc... hope it helps {{hugs}} kate www.geocities.com/katebme2002

I have to agree with Gar, the best absorbed protein in the world won't amount to a hill of beans if you can't gag it down or keep it down! I've tried a dozen or more different proteins and just finally found one that is palatable to me. Sugar free flavored syurps will help if you're having a hard time finding drinks that taste good. Best of luck to you! ~Peace
