Update 2023!
15 years post-op from my open RNY, which was done in Phoenix, AZ.
Pre-op I was close to 400 lbs and my lowest weight after surgery was 174, which was way too low.
I am comfortable where I am now at 195.
Like many of you, I have had complications from my RNY surgery which include: several hernia repairs, excessive gas, diarrhea, malabsorption, and throwing food up after eating. In 2012 I had my final hernia repair, where they lined my stomach wall with mesh and had no issues.
A couple of months ago, Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) is a condition characterized by deficiency of the exocrine pancreatic enzymes, resulting in the inability to digest food properly, or maldigestion, along with gallstones and IBS. After several different tests the Dr. would like to remove the gallbladder via Lap. She has advised I am at elevated risk from all the other surgery, and the mesh may have adhered to other organs etc. and might now be able to complete it without open surgery again. My husband and I are both concerned this is setting me up for more completions than need to be. Any advice, has anyone experienced this? Please give me any words of wisdom, I am scheduled for 10/6 and can still cancel.
Thanks
Scott
As far as back as i can remember I have always been fat.. But as a child it was called Husky, got to love that name...I can remember being in second grade when the nurse came in to do our weights, I was at 101lbs. Kids could be so mean...As we move ahead to senior year in High School i started to go to weight watchers, lost 75lbs and was under 200 for the first time in years.. Well we all know what happens the freshman year in college (the freshman 20) lol more like 40 for me..
Fast forward a few more years i try Jenny Craig did fine for a while then when i stopped the diet it all cam back plus more.. Then there were these new pills that worked great, omg i had never been that skinny so fast.. But after being on them for around 9 months the Dr said no more... Gained it all back plus again.. Then for some reason in 1998 i started to work out at the gym, and lost a lot of fat, but when i stopped it all came back again..
Now ten years later I finally have the chance for a second life.. There are so many things i want to do , and have not been able to do them cause of the weight.. When i get to my goal I am plaining on going to Costa Rica and do the zip lines there...
Now last Tuesday i got laid off with along 25 others from my office. I had thought about just canceling the surgery all together because i could not afford the cobra insurance.. I was scheduled with Dr Blackstone, and they were only able to come up with a date for early July
I called Dr. Schlesinger's office today after hearing a lot of great things in group. Well i was shocked when there was an apt available for me to meet him today, and set up surgery for next Monday June 23, 2008... Dam i can not believe this is going to happen a lot sooner than i had ever thought..
I will post more after i get home from the hospital.. Be safe everyone..
