1 Year out....

Sep 23, 2007

I just realized I've not updated since my visit with Dr. Pettine on 9/14/07!!! I'm down 107 lbs with another 55 to go by his goal, but in truth, I'm hoping for another 80-85 but a lot of that will be determinded as I continue to move downward.  I realize I'm dealing with a huge amount of excess skin, age and lifestyle.  But I also think I'm going to play it by ear with a careful eye on reality.
Dr. Pettine seemed to be as happy about my weight loss as I am.  I know many Dr. will not do people in their 60's for a variety of reasons including the fact that some don't have the needed motivation to "get 'er done".  Well,  I plan to continue to win by losing for my health sake and the fact that I not only feel a LOT better, but I also look a LOT better.  And I'm fortunate to have people around me that are continuing to encourage me.  For that, I'm very thankful.
Onward and DOWNward.....!!!!!

March 2007 Dr. Visit

Mar 09, 2007

On 03/07/07 I went to see Dr. Pettine and found that I'm now down 65 lbs.  and my BMI has dropped to 52 from the start of 62.6.  To me that is great news and he was pleased with it too.  We again talked about my age and physical condition not allowing me the level of exercise that a younger woman may have and as a result my losses aren't as dramatic.  However, I'm averaging a little over 10 lbs. per month.  Not bad for an old broad and I'm definately feeling better.
Dr. Pettine would like for me to start to reduce my protein drink intake and gain my of my protein from foods.  He also indicated that the South Beach Protein Bars are acceptable to use.
Unfortunately the labs didn't arrive so we were unable to review those and see exactly where I stood.  But after I came home I made some calls and hopefully they will be in the office as I write this update.
He did comment that by my next appointment in June I should be through with the hair loss and I feel that is true since I'm seeing new growth at this point.  It will be a joy to have a real head of hair again.
(Lord I ask that you forgive me for my complaining about how much I had and how fast it grew.)
I've updated my "ticker" which now includes both BMI and pounds lost.

Progress is slow but it's still progress!!

Jan 30, 2007

I had a visit with my PCP today and learned I was down another 12 lbs.  I would have loved a larger loss, but its a loss so I'm thankful for each pound gone.  I did some thinking on where I was and where I am now.
1-Yesterday I went to Colorado Springs with my daughter and great-granddaughter and we had a good day together.
2-I'm taking my little dog for walks (some days I'm making it twice a day).
3-I've adjusted my seat and steering wheel in my van to a more comfortable position for my body because my "belly" doesn't need as much room.
4-I'm taking on more around the house and not depending on the home care ladies for as much help.
5-I'm doing most of my own shopping instead of relying on others.
6-On the down side, I've lost so much hair that people are commenting on the hair loss instead of how much hair I have!! My scalp is quite shiny as it reflects out of my sparse and still falling locks of hair.  Hopefully, I'll soon see a reversal in this situation but I'm only 4 months out, so that may take a while longer.

9 lbs down....

Dec 05, 2006

I went to the dentist today and his office is in a medical facility so I asked if I could weigh while I was there.
I'm so happy to report that I've lost 9 more lbs. since my last check-up on 11/14.  I'm down 44 lbs. and my BMI has dropped from 62.6 to 55.5.
I know there is a long way to go, but I'm thrilled with the progress.

11/14/06 check up

Nov 15, 2006

Its taken me a couple of days to get to a point (emotionally) where I could post on my latest Dr. visit.
The trip is always so tiring because at best its 10 hours round trip plus the time with the Dr.  This time it was over 12 hours and I think being so tired played a big part in my reaction when I learned (much to my own disappointment) that I had "only"  lost 11 lbs. over the last month.  But now I've gotten some rest and I'm able to step back and realize its not that bad.  It really is a significant loss bringing me to 34 lbs. lost in 7 weeks.
Thats almost 5 lbs. per week average.  (Or as Dr. Pettine pointed out its almost 10% of my starting body weight!!)  With that and the help of all the love given me by the OH OFF sisters I'm now thinking in those terms and I've cleaned up my "stinking thinking" on this whole thing.

10/21/06 Little Bits

Oct 21, 2006

(As posted to the Over 50 Forum today.)

"Little Bits" is the name I've given my pouch. Here are some things I have and am learning about "Little Bits". (I'm sure there will be more as we spend more time together.)

1-Little Bits brought her own set of rules when I invited her into my life.
2-She is small enough that I sometimes forget just how small.
3-She quickly reminds me to only give her little bits when I try to over feed her.
4-She kicks back at just a little bit of extra fluids.
5-She doesn't offer even a little bit of forgiveness if I forget her rules.
6-She does like to try new foods... but I have to be careful not to upset her so I offer her just a little bit of something new every few days.
7-She leaves no doubt that she is now the boss and won't put up with even a little bit of foolishness from me.

10/14/06 Follow up visit

Oct 14, 2006

Yesterday was my first follow up visit.  Dr. Pettine was very pleased with my progress and 21 lb. weight loss.  (That is an average of 1 lb. per day since my surgery!!.... It also drops my BMI from 62.6 to 58.7..........Fantastic!!!)
The trip of course was long and hard, but I do need to do another follow up on 11/14/06.  I think after that it will be something like 3 months before I'll need to return unless I experience some kind of problems which would surprise me.  I'm doing so well and feeling good.  My clothes are getting loose and the steering wheel no longer rests on my "belly"!!

9/25/06 Ahhhhhhhh.....HOME !!!

Oct 14, 2006

Well.... the surgery went fine, but after it was all over and I was headed for recovery, I developed some problems when they removed the breathing tubes.  So they had to hook me back up and put me on a ventilator and I spent a couple of days in the ICU.  But I'm home again and feeling pretty good except for some joints.  My right hip is very painful and Dr. Pettine said surgical tables are notorious for causing pain in arthretic joints.  However, he also assured me it would pass and  gave me a prescription for vicodin to help me get through all of that.
It may be a bit before I'll feel like getting back to my emails again and responding to all the loving questions of concern that I've received.  In the meantime for those who read this entry.  Thank you so much and God bless you.  Special thanks to my niece Michele who acted as my "Angel" and to Karen who carried the messages to beloved sisters of OFF.

9/19/06 And now the time has come...

Oct 14, 2006

I'm to report to the hospital at 8:30 a.m. for 10 a.m. surgery on Thursday 9/21/06.  I'm not particularly nervous but I am anxious to move forward and start adjusting to my new life and experience the weight loss.  Just for the records, I'm starting with a BMI of 62.6! It will be interesting to see what it becomes as I travel along in my journey.
