20 months post op - acidy?? xpost from Ontario board

all!  I haven't seen many of you for some time, so many new faces as well.  I wish you all luck and success on your journey.

I'm posting mostly with a question for WLS vets (I'm 20 months post op btw).

Just recently...say, the past month or so, I've been getting a terrible acid-y feeling in pouchy.  I used to have severe GERD prior to my RNY, but I've had zero issues since.  This is fairly new and I hate it.  Is it common and normal to have acid reflux come back?  I thought that we would never feel this acid again?

Also, my appetite has been going downhill in this time too.  I'm still working on getting my protein in and I handle liquids fine.  I just don't have the appetite.  After a few bites I just feel "blahh" like I don't want to eat anymore.  This is just a little unusual as I normally have no issue eating lol.  In 20 months post op I've never once vomited, and I don't have trouble tolerating foods.  I try to stick away from the sugars as I am a dumper, and still am.

Any advice from the vets??

Thanks so much in advance!

I still take an antacid at bedtime and I certainly had something like acid stomach throughout this journey. The antacid takes care of it pretty much now but there were nights I nearly chugged the entire Maalox bottle to coat my stomach the first couple of years post-op.

Hi Liz and welcome back.

I ran out of my PPI a while back and was without them for a few days. I got a really sore pouch. Like sore to the touch. Didn't affect my eating and didn't seem to have reflux but just sore. Someone mentioned the PPI and I got some over the counter stuff and started back on it and the sore pouch went back to my cast iron pouch. I hadn't related the 2 since I didn't seem to feel reflux or anything but I guess that was it. I know some folks stay on it for life and if that is what it takes, so be it. I'm off all other meds so doing that one is ok.

Oh yeah, I did Tums and that did nothing. I had to go to the generic prilosec for it to work.

I don't feel like I have acid but at 3 years out I still take my Prilosec every night.  If I happen to miss it a couple days in a row I get a knawing hunger feeling in my tummy.

I do have weeks that I don't have much of an appetite but those also seem to be the weeks that I crave carbs.

You might want to touch base with your Surgeon if it continues.
