avoiding temptation

So have been in maintenance for almost a year and am finding it difficult to resist temptations around the house. particularly with the carby snacks like pretzels etc that go into my kid's lunches.

what strategies do you guys use to avoid letting them suck you in?

How productive of you to reach out! I will be watching for ideas. Nothing wrong with having carbs for kids but I'm wondering if you can remove the temptation from the house and swap something healthier for them too?

Avoidance is a sacrifice but it does work. I doubt I could tell you anything you don't already know and tried a lot. We didn't to surgery point without trying a lot of tactics. I can tell you the sacrifice in the moment never feels worth it to me. It's the long-term consequences I see, not in the moment. So, knowing I need an immediate reward I used the sticker program. Any day I didn't get tempted, I get a standard sticker. When I am in my pantry, wanting the yum then go to the fridge and look for fruit instead I get a better choice sticker (which also shows me what days had mental struggles). If I eat a no-go carb, I have to put the bad sticker on the month's calendar before I eat it. This has actually stopped me a few times. If I have the want and don't eat, I get my cute sticker. If stickers don't work, still chart it. Trade it for a bad household chore (toilets?). Whatever discouragement you can give make the consequences immediate and meaningful to you.

It's a journey, but it's our path and only we can really find our own way out of the maze.

Unfortunately my kid is a difficult eater. I'm at a loss for what to send for his lunches period. He will not eat anything that requires reheating, won't eat cheese. Won't eat cold cuts. Won't eat vegetables. I've had days where he's come home having eaten nothing all day for the above reasons.

ill always have snacks for him...so I'm the one who needs to exercise self control.

i like the reward system method. This was not an issue for me while losing because the scale drop was the reward, the next size down in wardrobe...now, there is none and I think part of the problem is that I can do the mindless snacking and still maintain my weight....now....but that is going to change if I don't start reigning it in soon. Coming up on the two year mark and determined to not be a statistic.

Do you use artificial sweeteners? For me, when I reduce my use of them, my cravings go away. I know this is not the case for all of us, but it does help me.

While I don't have a kid, I do live with two people who don't eat the way I do.

Things that work for me, sometimes, to control my home environment:

There is a snack cabinet in the house where snacks live. I'm pretty good about not going in there. Perhaps you could keep kid snacks in a cabinet or opaque container of some sort so that you don't see them?

I keep things in the freezer and, for some reason, they don't call to me from there. Maybe you could keep kiddo's snacks in the freezer? Since they'd thaw in time for their lunch.

My people are also good about having non-Gwen food that doesn't really appeal to me. Art likes Clif bars, for example, and I'm pretty good at ignoring them - I think they have something I'm allergic to in them so that's a big motivator to ignore them! Lance LOVES rice and I'm pretty meh about it. So it's easy for me to always keep rice in the fridge for the guys to supplement the proteins I cook, because I don't really care about it. Does your kiddo like things that you don't care about eating? You could try to prioritize those things maybe? Do you have any food allergies/intolerances you can make work in your favor? :)

I'm a saltaholic...so pretzels popcorn etc. Those are the hardest for me. Though I'm ok with a little popcorn, I'm more worried about the bite and sliver of this and that while pepping. Meals and school lunches etc. I think I'll. Have to talk to hubby about taking this on.
