Dr. Phillip SchauerDr. Philip Schauer is the Director of Advanced Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgery at Cleveland Clinic and president of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery. In addition to bariatric surgery, his specialty interests include laparoscopic surgery, gastrointestinal surgery and colon surgery. A frequent national and international lecturer, Dr. Schauer also has published scores of articles on topics relating to bariatric and laparoscopic surgery, and his first textbook on this subject is due out in the summer of 2007, entitled ?Minimally Invasive Bariatric Surgery.?





Dr. ChandBipan Chand, MD, graduated from the University of Missouri School of Medicine, Kansas City, Missouri, in 1996. He completed surgical residency training at the Cleveland Clinic followed by a fellowship in advanced laparoscopy and endoscopy also at the Clinic. Dr. Chand joined the General Surgery staff in 2003 with a special interest in bariatric surgery, advanced endoscopy, and foregut surgery (GERD, hiatal hernia).

He is board certified in surgery by the American Board of Surgery and holds professional memberships with the American Medical Association, American College of Surgeons - Diplomat Member, Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, American Society of Bariatric Surgery and American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.


Karen Cooper, DOKaren Cooper, DO, is a primary care physician and member of the American Society for Bariatric Physicians.  She practices as a Bariatrician at the Cleveland Clinic Health Systems in the Department of General Surgery.

As the medical weight management specialist of the bariatric surgery program, Dr. Cooper evaluates the patients both pre-operatively and post-operatively.  She also attends to patients who are overweight or obese, but who do not wish to have the surgery or do not qualify for the surgical procedure.  Dr. Cooper utilizes a team approach which includes dieticians, psychologists and medical specialists (for high-risk patients) as part of her evaluation for medical and surgical weight management.

In addition to bariatric medicine, Dr. Cooper?s specialty interests include exercise physiology, nutrition sciences and preventive medicine.  She has previously taught group exercise classes and hopes to tailor similar programs specifically for obese patients.  After receiving her medical degree from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Cooper completed her residency in primary care medicine at University Hospitals Health System in Cleveland, Ohio.
