Gastric bypass versus gastric sleeve
Hello! I reviewed the options over with my surgeon and he felt I would benefit from the malabsorption I would receive from the bypass. I wasn't concerned about not being able to take ibuprofen and I didn't smoke which were two of his reasons to choose the sleeve instead of the bypass. Good luck on making the best decision on your journey.

My priority was the surgery with the best possibility of putting type 2 diabetes in remission. I discussed the options with my doctor and that's how we settled on RNY.

My first surgery was VSG and my revision was RNY. I had severe heart burn and had to have the revision. I wish I had the RNY to begin with knowing what I know now.

I think I would have done better with the malabsorption.
with acid VSG will make it worse. I would ask your doctor about the acid reflux and the VSG. I still have some even with the RNY BUT it's way better than it was with the VSG.

The sleeve was fairly new when I had surgery, so I really didn't even consider it. There just wasn't enough of a track record. But I'm really glad I had RNY, regardless. It not only helped me lose all the weight, but cured my diabetes too.
I wouldn't advise anyone to get VSG. A great many people develop acid reflux after the sleeve, or existing reflux gets much worse. Revisions to RNY from VSG are very common. I wouldn't want to end up needing two surgeries, especially since many insurance companies will only cover one per lifetime.
If I had it to do over again I would still have RNY -- but I would do it a lot sooner.
