Will a cough cause them to cancel my surgery?

I have surgery in two days and I have this nagging cough that I cant get rid of. I wouldn't say I have a cold, just this non-productive cough. Has anyone had their surgery canceled because of a cough?

From reading on here different surgeons differ on this. I had a head cold with a light fever and a minor cough from the drainage. I had my pre op visit 2 days before the surgery. I told him my symptoms and he said it was my sinuses. He said along with antibiotics they would give me some stuff in the OR anyway that would dry them up. He also had the benefit of my chest X-ray report I had taken like 2 hours before to know there wasn't anything in my lungs. He said as long as my fever stayed under 101 everything would be fine.

Bottom line I would call the surgeon and see what they say before I went through the bowl prep and got to the hospital.

I had a cough but my Pre-Op Chest X-Ray came back fine so they proceeded with my surgery. Think positive thoughts and everything will turn out Great!! Good Luck!

I think you should call your doctor in the morning and ask.  The doctor that I went through made it clear that I could not get sick or he would have to reschedule my surgery.  Well, I live in Minnesota.  Do you know how hard it is to not get sick once in six weeks, specially when your kids have colds and coughs? Thankfully I was fine and didn't get sic****il a few days after surgery.  Some people on here have had symptoms and still went through with their surgery.  You might get to be one of them.  Call in the morning.

Chances are, unless you are running a fever, your surgery should go on as planned.   but your doctor has the final say, and is best to let them know in the am.  On day of surgery, remind the intake staff so they are not freaking out, especially if you are not contagious.  Most hospitals are overrun with influenza right now, so don't be too shocked if they ask a lot of questions.  Keep a pillow nearby after surgery to help cushion your tummy when you have to cough...that'll most likely be the main problem with having a nagging cough.  Good luck to you, and hope you have a smooth surgery and recovery!!

Because mine was non-productive and I didn't have a fever, I was allowed to proceed. Good luck!
