Pain Control After other Surgeries

I had brain surgery 2 weeks ago and am having a HELL of a time trying to control the pain.  My docs are at a loss - stating pain isn't usually an issue with this surgery.  I was kept in the hospital a couple of extra days after the surgery bc the switch from IV meds took longer than expected.  We cannot find anything to control the pain -- what meds do y'all use/have you used in the past?

We have tried Roxicet, various forms/dosages of morphine, tylenol, neurontin, oxycontin, dilaudid and others.  All the narcotics do is help me rest for about 40 mins -- the pain remains at about a steady 8/9.  The neurosurgeon thought about ultram but said its so similar to Roxicet, it's not really worth it.  Right now I'm taking MS COntin, neurontin, and fioricet (along ith some seizure meds and I think I end my steroids today) ...I think I may whither away from the pain.  Seriously, I cannot take this pain anymore.

Please let me know if you have any advice.

(In case ur interested (I know it's been forever since I've posted anything -- they found metal lodged in my brain from a previous surgery, which they think caused teh seizures and 3 tumors!! but all were removed and surgery went fine except for this PAIN).

Percocet worked fine for me after my gall bladder surgery.

Has your surgeon consulted another doctor to see if someone else might have some ideas?  Perhaps he could consult a pain management specialist?  I know they usually deal with chronic pain issues but still, it might be an idea.

I hope you're able to figure something out.

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR.  If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor.  Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me.  If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her.    Check out my blog.

Ask about Nucinta see if that one may work. If not maybe Demerol? Is very strong, but you need to get the pain under control for sure.

Hi, I sorry to hear about your pain issues.  Yes their should have been pain management team brought aboard prior to your discharge?  The discharge team at the hospital should have done this prior to your release, so that you would not be in the situation that you are in now.  Can you please contact your surgeon and hospital administration to let them know what you are going through so that they are well aware of this situation. I would also let your PCP know as well so maybe they could get involved as well to facilitate the process. It's hard to be in pain and have to manage your own case at home when you are not feeling well. Do you have someone at home that can assist you in this matter that way you are able to get some relief and not be taggered with all the phone call that might need to be made?

You said they've tried various forms...have they tried any of these meds in liquid form? I ask because when I had my hip replacement the pain pills weren't working for me either and when they heard I was GPB they switched me to a liquid form of vicodin and even though the vicodin pills didn't work, the liquid vicodin did. I suspect the liquid was more easily absorbed by us? I'm not sure if any of those stronger pain meds come in a liquid form, but it's worth a shot to put it out there! Maybe you can ask about that if they haven't already tried.

I'm sorry you are going through this, and are having to suffer pain! I hope they find something soon! Hang in there!

You should DEFINATELY be seing a Pain Management Dr. If they haven't offered you one, ASK to be referred to one. Demerol is good, but you can't take if for very long without some pretty bad side effects. Fentora/Fentanyl has both a dissolvable pill, 'lollipop', and a patch. That's what I take for chronic kidney stones. I can occasionally pass one at home while I have some Fentora on board.
