Would you like a cup of coffee?

I just had someone tell me that their program strongly prohibits coffee post surgery and ask me if I ever have coffee.

My program also restricts caffinated drinks, especially early on. Dehydration is a major issue following weight loss surgery. Believe it or not, dehydration is actually the number one reason that people are readmitted to the hospital during the first few days and weeks after surgery. Coffee generally contains caffine and caffine acts as a diuretic, so there is some concern that consuming coffee can contribute to deydration. Caffine is also known to contain acids that can increase the gastic acids which can cause heartburn and gastro esohpageal reflux. Finally, studies indicate that coffee stimulates gallbladder contraction and colonic motor activity within minutes of drinking it. Here is a link to a review of the issue.

My program does allow 'decaffinated' coffee and tea, so that's what I enjoy. qq

Hey Barbara - My doctor (both surgeon and PCP) strongly suggested I give up my coffee.   I was a three to four cup a day regular coffee drinker - black with one splenda please!    I gave it up prior to surgery for decafe.      Gave up everything for three months after surgery then HAD to have something.   I started out with decafe latte so I got a bit of protein in with the non fat milk and still had coffee flavor.  Went to half cafe latte and have been drinking that since.    I'm two weeks shy of a year out from surgery.   I have a latte almost every morning.

Robin,

Like you, I often have coffee. Many of us do. Some people have issues with it and I think that's why some programs recommend against it, at least in the beginning. Many are able to tolerate it as they move further out from surgery, some are never able to have it without side effects, but that seems to be rare.

Enoy your lattes!

My program only lists decaf coffee and tea.  However, honestly, I have been doing the "caffeine" in the AM and then switch to decaf when I am in the office.  What is your take on soda?

For those still trying to lose weight, I would suggest that they not have any carbonated beverages. Also it can be difficult/painful for those who are fairly new post op because the carbonation takes up space and can expand, putting pressure on their pouch or sleeve. Personally, I don't really enjoy carbonated drinks much anymore because I can't get 'enough' to satisfy me. I think you need to see what works for you and do what you can to stay away from the sugar laiden versions.

BTW... Congratulations your significant success!

For many people giving up their caffine could cause real harm to the people around them.

some people have no problem drinking real coffee, I've met them!  me, I have some problems but drink it anyway.  I just like it too much to give it up.

I only drink decaf late in the day.

I don't believe coffee is a diuretic. they say it is, but how come I can drink NO fluids but coffee some days and my urine doesn't get dark?  can anyone explain that?

once upon a time I had a group to talk about Binge Eating Disorder, and later one about Clean Eating.

PM me if you are interested in either of these.

I actually have no problem drinking regular coffee. That said, I didn't do it for the first few months. I'm a very 'compliant' person/patient.

Re: Coffee and Dehydration... I'm just citing the review... I suggest people become aware and then discuss the issue with their Dr/Dietician and go from there.
