My docs wanted me to stop caffiene before surgery, and I rarely do it now. Decaf on the other hand was fine as long as acid was not an issue, which it isn't.

I am suppose to never again have caffeine. I stayed off for two months, than I relapsed and had one or two a week. Three months out, I drink decaf coffee all the time but have regular ice tea now. I talked it over with my therapist that had RNY and work with the surgery center and she didn't understand why our NUT said no caffeine ever either.
Dr. Cirangle encourages us to drink coffee after surgery. In particular strong expresso. The benefits of coffee are great and if you don't put a lot of stuff in it that adds calories and fat it is just fine after surgery. I think that before surgery you should stop drinking it because you can't have it until you are all healed.

I think coffee is gross tasting. But, if I didn't, I'd drink it. It has a lot of health benefits.
